about a week ago i picked up my first medium-quality microphone. Since then I have recorded some pretty rough songs, most of them unfinished, but I am eager to hear some opinions so I am going to post them anyway.
Edit 1: met up with a bassist friend of mine, we worked on the song formerly known as "withering" which is now "dead stop". we've decided to form a band, and have a drummer and rhythm guitarist on board.
this one's still unfinished, but we added bass as well as some synth-violin stuff on his effects box. i think it's a lot better: http://www.supload.com/listen?s=wbkOqY (listening to it again, it pretty much sounds like radiohead took a dump on it)

You need to mess with micing up your guitar. Too much fret noise and strumming. You need some bass up in that shit too (whether it just being on the piano or using an actual bass guitar).
Song wise, its not my style so I think everything is wrong with it
These are pretty good. I think you have a really good grasp on recording. Everything seems to be mixed pretty well and unless you really want to make flawlessly produced music there's not much I would improve. I think the somewhat lo-fi sound works well for you.
I also really like the slightly psychedelic ambient sounds you have going on. They compliment your guitar and voice really well, and they never seem stuck on just for the hell of it. A lot of people mess that up.
The biggest thing that your songs need is fleshing out. Bring Back the Pain is good, but the others just seem inconsequential. They might work as part of a larger album, but as they are now there's nothing to stop the listener from just saying 'hmm, that's interesting' and never listening to it again. You could build them up into full songs, or they could also be interesting if they were longer and maybe built towards a climax. In this situation I think a light rhythm section could help. You don't need a full drum set but maybe some simple percussion to keep the beat. And like mes said bass in some form wouldn't hurt.
But keep up the good work. You really have a good start and I'll probably stick Bring Back the Pain in my itunes library. Make sure you update this thread, I want to see where you go with this.

it seems like no matter how i do it i hear more strumming and clicking than actual guitar. what kind of arrangement would you recommend to cut down on this?
food: thanks a lot, i agree with everything you have to say. i have a tendency to start songs and then leave them unfinished indefinitely, so I think I will just be working on songs i've already written for a while. I'm going to make Withering at least two minutes longer and add vocals, so i'll make sure to post that as soon as it's finished
I like it, I don't have a whole lot of constructive crits, but as far as micing, the first step is to back it away, and for an acoustic guitar, try aiming the mic at the 12th fret instead of the soundhole

Yeah, you need to use condenser mics if you're not already. Aim one at the 12th fret, place one at where to body and neck meet. But aim it kinda toward the sound hole. Make sure and not to mix these tracks on top of each other. Pan one hard (100%) and one a bit more center (50-60%).

What kind of acoustic are you using?
