VAVLe VS Zynga

Alright, look. Valve and Zynga are pretty much tied for best Developer. The thing is, Zynga really shouldn't be mentioned in the same breath as Valve, as far as being a Dev goes. So, I'm asking you guys, do the right thing. Consider what each side has to offer, and then vote for the best Dev. *cough VALVe cough.

To help out my friend here, allow me to explain.

The Escapist is attempting to hold a contest where the voters decide who are the best developers. This year they included Zynga, makers of such (in)famous games like: Farmville, Mob Wars, and Vampire Wars.

Zynga has been able to zerg rush the competition to get to the semifinals, beating such Rockstar, Infinity Ward, and even Square Enix. Gentleman, this is a war.

Make no mistake, Zynga has used Facebook as their tool of destruction. They have broadcasted on their forums, their twitter, and even their game to get players to come on and vote. Valve has responded by alerting all of Steam to come onboard and vote.

So, now we come to you, will you come in and help? Will you help decide by the .3% that Valve is losing by right now as I type? Will Penny Arcade come in and show the world what a true game developer looks like?

I think you all know how you should vote, the question is, will you be our Knights of Rohan?

Like I said, they're winning because they study other better games and steal their ideas.

Thus, they have perfected the Zerg Rush.

Just think, if this was about the best game ever it would mean the line up is: World of Warcraft, Dragon Age, Half Life 2, and Farmville.

Can you honestly picture that and not laugh?

I think it's more the "advertising"

the same people who play farmville and stuff are exactly the kind of people that would vote for these things

us ELITE gamers ain't got no time, we going pro 8-)

but seriously is there somewhere I can vote without signing up

    Ugh.

Voted to help bring down Farmville's maker, though it'll take a couple hundred more people to push the tide in Valve's favor.

Which is a double-edged sword, since you know where all of Zynga's votes have been coming from...

Bragging rights my friends, bragging rights. Valve has put this up on Steam, and Zynga has put this up on their facebook games. Plus, if Valve wins the whole thing they might have a sale like they did when Freeman won the IGN poll for best video game character.

I have always been a fan of Penny Arcade, but I've only dabbled in the forums. I've never felt a strong draw to register, until tonight that is. So, hold it against me if you want, but I ask you to still help us.

Why should I give a shit that some small gaming publication is holding a poll over the popularity of video game companies?

Half Life 2 remains one of the greatest video games ever made. Valve have sold billions of dollars worth of software, and operate one of the largest video game digital distribution networks in the world.

Somehow, I don't think anyone at Valve are going to have time to be upset in between counting dollar dollar bills and laughing at the Steam forums.

I think the attempt is to appeal to the greater internet community. I don't think a few random fans are site-whoring the Escapist.

That said, who cares? An internet poll is, by definition, bowing to the fact that its results will be defined by whoever happens to care enough. Clearly Facebook users (or possibly 4chan) care just as much as "hardcore" gamers. So who's to say they're wrong? Why are you bemoaning the fact that something that is defined by majority rule is now leaning to what any idiot can tell is a massive majority.

The insecurity that self-proclaimed "hardcore gamers" evidence in their "battle" against casual games and gamers is pathetic.

Well, I appreciate you see that we aren't really site whoring, just trying to get some help on the votes.

As for your take on it, I understand your point, but see mine. It's like a vote for President, everyone wants to get their supporters out in force. Same thing here, much smaller stakes. We just dislike that Zynga isn't a game developer of the same caliber of Valve. What more, we already know Zynga is spamming Facebook and their forums trying to drum up support for their side. We don't have the ability to get 90 million people to click a link, but all we can hope is that gamers across the internet will come and try and counter Zynga's spamming with the true love they feel towards a developer that's brought them countless memories.

    Gentlemen...Valve needs you.

I'm going to roll past the ridiculous President comment; I'm sure you meant it as hyperbole, and that's fine. Here's my question: what does "Zynga isn't a game developer of the same caliber of Valve" have to do with a popularity-based internet poll?

Sorry for the bad analogy, I was meaning the supporters of the two went out for voters to go vote. That's why I said they are nowhere near the same stakes. This is just us trying to get supporters of the developers out to vote on who they think is better.

Anyways, even if this is a popularity contest I feel confident in saying that Valve has more fans than Zynga. The problem is, they are a spread out as the wind. Zynga on the other hand has all their fans in one neat little basket that they can alert all at once to go do something that they would like. So, all I'm trying to do is mobilize the fan base.
