Yes, you.
So you browse this forum, and you see comic edits! They roll overhead like capricious storms that forecasters can't predict. But there's always one person who always knows when an edit is coming, and that's whoever made it. You think that's not you, but it
can be. Could it not be that the reason only a select few people seem to make all the comic edits is because
you're not attempting them?
Wanna give it a try? Sure you do.
First, load an image editor. It can be Photoshop, it can be
Paint.NET, it can be
GIMP, it can even be Windows Paintbrush in an emergency. If you want to make a simple edit, just blank out the text boxes with a white paintbrush and get to writing your own witty dialogue.
Little kids can do it, so here's your opportunity to outdo a little kid.
A few notes on fonts.
If you want the Authentic PA Flavour, shell out a few bucks and get
the Blambot font. If you're cheap, then go with what looks good. As a general rule, Comic Sans is frowned upon, but Penny Arcade, prior to
Cardboard and Steel back in 2003, used Comic Sans itself so that may do if you're editing old school strips. Side note: Dinosaur Comics is in Lucida Console. MSPA uses Courier,
not Courier New.
MAAAAGIC?
Editing the image itself, like this, requires a bit more advanced tactics. You're going to need to get familiar with your image editor of choice and freestyle with the clone stamp tool, cut-and-pasting parts of the image, trimming down what you've just pasted so it fits, resizing or transforming it with scale/skew/distort, and all that freestyle jazz. Also keep in mind that Gabe draws the original at a resolution of approximately 4x the size of what's uploaded to the site (around 3200 pixels wide), so if you want fine detail work you could try resizing the image big so you can work, and then shrink it back down. Keep in mind, however, that this may introduce blurring or blockiness depending on what resize mode you use.
Anyways, give it a try. They're waiting for you.
