"Blizzard Entertainment, Inc. announced today that World of Warcraft®, its subscription-based massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG), is now played by more than 8 million gamers around the world."
Just through the result of Warcry.com Editor Choice Award, MMORPG.com Reader Choice Award and the ongoing event at MMOsite.com Reader Choice Award. Im curious to ask WHY WoW didn’t won any damn good at Reader Choice? What do u guys think? We have more than 8,000,000 ppl around the world, I just don’t make any sense about it. @MMOsite Silkroad & Anarchy Online dominated, @MMOrpg EVE Online pwnz WoW over all the categories. What’s your point about the huge difference between Reader Choice and Editor Choice?
I have no idea what the OP said. Is the question whether or not WOW follows the AOL model of counting A) Active accounts, Cancelled accounts, and C) each character created under each active account?
Eve wins more awards at MMORPG.COM because its a better MMO.
Now, before you jump on me, I have played WoW much more than Eve. About 300 hours of WoW vs. 50 or so of Eve. But from what I have seen, regardless of fun factor, Eve just gets the MMO part of the nomenclature right, for once.
Your mileage may vary, as well as your fun factor, but I truly believe the experience to be what people ask for, yet may not be able to handle.
Hurray for having more subscribers than a small country.
Soon Azeroth is going to have more population than Canada.
Welp, at least that puts us one rung lower on the "to conquer" list for the next evil dictator.
Wouldn't this put us HIGHER?
Also: I doubt Blizzard counts individual created characters. More than likely, it's current active accounts(you can't count non-subscribing people as subscribers).
But this is quite terrifying. I can't imagine how popular MMO's will become when they finally go virtual, as in matrix style. Our society will most likely collapse.
That 8 million doesn't take into account people no longer subscribed and people with multiple accounts. When I used to play one of my guild leaders had 6 accounts to himself, a few others in the guild had 2-3 accounts as well. Gold farmers I'm sure have alot of accounts going. If they took those numbers into their calculations I'd bet that that 8 million would be a good 1.5 million lower, expecially with the no longer playing people such as myself.
The thing is, if they were all paying at once for the 10 dollar a month subscription, then blizzard would be making $80,000,000 a month. There is no way that that is actually happening.

They have said many times that that is the current number of active accounts, it does not include accounts of people who no longer subscribe.
And to be fair, the beating any server would take from 8 million wouldn't work. Torrents are the only practical way. Now if we didn't have to use their horrible version of Bit Torrent......

Asian (well maybe just China, not sure) accounts pay a fraction what the US does, which is $15.
World of Warcraft's Subscriber Definition
World of Warcraft subscribers include individuals who have paid a subscription fee or have an active prepaid card to play World of Warcraft, as well as those who have purchased the game and are within their free month of access. Internet Game Room players who have accessed the game over the last thirty days are also counted as subscribers. The above definition excludes all players under free promotional subscriptions, expired or cancelled subscriptions, and expired prepaid cards. Subscribers in licensees' territories are defined along the same rules.

::looks into brother's room and see's 2 1/2 year old nephew watching his pop play:: ...sigh ;/
Starcraft 2 will have a 3 trillion dollar budget which includes developing a game console specifically for playing Starcraft 2 and game centers in every starbucks.
Blizzard is making 12,000,000,000 dollars a fucking month?! Where the FUCK is the money going?
Vivindi, probably. Though I must bring up the fact that they're not making 8 mill x $15 bucks a month. Even in the US you can get cheaper prices if you buy in bulk, and in places like china, the cost per month is much MUCH lower.
(Also, I think you mean to say 120,000,000 a month )

Hi, you must be new here.
Someone who plays a time-investment heavy game like WoW is bad, it means they have no life and are probably neglecting their family.
But playing another other game for hours on end is okay.
...Fuck.

So WoW is now larger than 142 countries.
apparently, yes.
