Tunys Thornheart, Half-Elf Bard/Warlord
Background:
It was, in fact, Tunys's charm and love of stories that finally landed his mother the job she'd been searching for, and a place to settle down. When they arrived in Hammerfast chasing rumors of a lender in need of tellers and paying a generous wage, Tunys and his mother first stopped in a local tavern where their lives would forever change. Tunys struck up a conversation with a young dwarven man as they waited for their food at the bar, and as a matter of course began to tell this dwarf the epic tale of The Hobgoblin's Gambit. Before long, those nearby became interested in the story, and soon Tunys was standing on a table, performing the epic tale for the whole tavern. It was Tunys' 17th birthday, and one he would never forget.
It wasn't long before word of Tunys' performance reached the ears of one of the nobles in town, and Tunys was offered a job in his local performance troupe. Shortly thereafter, Tunys was able to convince the company to hire his mother as a seamstress as well. They were finally living a comfortable life in a place that was starting to feel like home. Tunys adopted his stage name of Tunys Thornheart and began to realize that his words and performances had an inborn touch of the arcane. He set out to learn the ways of the Bard, and soon came to be known as one of the finest performers in the area.
It was several years later when the legendary warrior Erdric Korim came to see Tunys perform for the first time. He was struck by Tunys' natural ability to lead and his flair for improvisation, as Tunys would often redirect and rearrange his fellow performers on stage with quick movements and gestures barely noticeable to the average townsperson. He approached Tunys after the show and offered him the chance of a lifetime: to be trained as a battlefield leader by the one and only Erdric Korim himself. Tunys, naturally, accepted, and began training with Erdric shortly thereafter.
It wasn't long before Tunys realized that his true calling was not on the stage, but on the battlefield. He felt more at home there than he had even on the stage, and especially in situations where there were others who depended on his strategic mind and his direction to succeed.
Tunys has recently finished his training with Erdric, and now seeks to set out into the world, and blaze a trail of his own.
Personality/Appearance:
Tunys is of fairly nondescript height and build for his race and is easily recognizable by his shock of longish white-blonde hair. He has trouble sitting still and will often be seen anxiously tapping his foot or running a hand through his hair in situations that would normally require him to do so.

Vista doesn't know where she came from. She doesn't know who made her. She doesn't know why she was built or when. She doesn't know if 'Vista' is her actual name. There's a lot that Vista doesn't know. There is one thing that she does know with absolute clarity, though: How to disembowel a room full of Gnolls in 30 seconds and look good while doing it.
Vista was discovered two Summers ago just outside of Fallcrest, dug up from under 30ft of soil as the local farmers were putting in a new well. Silent, ancient, clinging tightly to a 5' long bloodied Fullblade, battle-scarred and seemingly dead, she was taken to the local blacksmith to be broken down for parts before the light in her eyes suddenly clicked on and she sat up to look at her helpers and inquire in a tinny hallow voice, "AM I ALIVE AGAIN?" Soon enough the farmers stopped screaming and the questions began to come. Who are you? What are you? What could have done that kind of damage to you? Unfortunately, the centuries have all but erased Vista's memory of the past, and prevented any answers from coming that day.
After an awkward start in her new life, Vista has been somewhat taken in by the villagers after singlehandedly slaughtering a pack of wolves that were menacing the local livestock. Of course, for anyone who saw what was left of the bodies, there will always be the suspicion of just how inhuman this machine person actually is and just how willing she'd be to do the same to any human who gets in her way. For her part, Vista is enjoying the relative peace of the town, but knows deep down in her bolts that she out to be out in the world, fighting, hunting, killing...
If Vista could have one wish, she would like her memory restored, and to find out who built her and for what purpose.

Khorne Halastra, Tiefling Wizard
Pic:
Background:
Khorne is of average height and build, with long red hair usually kept in a braid. His skin is darkly tanned and cast with a slight reddish hue. His horns are polished and his tail is kept clean. Khorne is handsome, and has learned how to smile charmingly without showing his sharp teeth.
Khorne is a tad aloof amongst strangers. Having horns and a tail will do that to a young child in a human city. He is guarded with his trust, but is generally amenable, polite and refined in his ways. In the taverns he prefers a sharp, peppery wine over ale or spirits. Spicy foods and beautiful women of questionable moral virtue are also top draws in his downtime.
Having earned enough experience and wealth to properly outfit himself with a magic wand and a nifty suit of leather that complements his fire based magics (Leather Armor of Resistance +1 (Fire), which I assume stacks with his natural resistance), Khorne is ready to step into the greater world of proper adventuring.
If Khorne had one wish? He honestly doesn't know. Wealth, fame, glory, magical prowess, land, all of these things and more Khorne desires. But a wish is a powerful boon, and is not meant to be spent lightly. If at all possible, Khorne would keep that wish in his back pocket, for when it really counted.
Yeah, I'm pretty tired and still have some work to do on Rakash's background and such. I'll probably work on it at work tomorrow

Golem, the Warforged Psion
Background:
But one day, while Golem was preparing some lovely lamb stew for dinner, and baking some bread on the side as well, a great catastrophe befell Sigmund - a catastrophe in the form of four adventurers: a wizard, a rogue, a cleric and a fighter. While Sigmund fell to a combination of sword, dagger, Flamestrike and a Melf's Acid Arrow, Golem could feel its master intense anger and rage but that was hardly unusual and Golem assumed its master would soon be smashing a lot of glassware that it would no doubt have to clean up.
So it was some surprise when Golem entered Sigmund's study, bowl of lamb stew and fresh baked bread in hand, for both Golem and the adventurers alike. On their part, the adventurers saw a monstrous magical construct about to avenge the death of its maker by splattering their brains about the walls; on its part, Golem was promptly met with an arrow and a Magic Missile to the face. Shortly thereafter though, one of the adventurers, a human named Jack, stopped the action, tasted the stew, and apparently laid some sort of "dibs" on Golem.
And so Golem had a new master and a new purpose, which was primarily carrying loot and breaking down the occasional door. It was a splendid experience, revealing to Golem much of the world it had read about during its idle time in the tower, but it all came to an end at an inn in Fallcrest when Jack and the others instructed Golem to stay as they planned to sneak into a dragon's lair. Golem stood idly in a corner for a very long while, with nothing to alleviate its boredom but to practice its telepathy on the various patrons. It didn't think Jack was coming back after all and soon the innkeeper came to the same conclusion. Given how the innkeeper's wife continually insists it be gotten rid of, Golem's fairly anxious now about not being relegated to being throw out.
Personality:
Wish:
Golem would wish for a new master. But not just any master; a master who would let it do what it wants. Except that it can already do what it wants, because it has no master. Yeah, Golem doesn't really get "freedom" yet.
* Note, I may be insane with this idea, but I think it might actually be amusing to play. I will gladly play Golem as though another member of the party is its new master, say by claiming it from the Fallcrest innkeeper, and I'd try not to be a dick about the whole, "Hey look, I'm a golem who doesn't understand human behaviour. Hijinks ensue. Hahaha." thing. I just like the idea of a telepathic artificial construct.
- A Genasi Frost Mage. Pewpewpew. Locks on and doesn't stop hurting.
- A Deva Wizard specializing in blasting foes around the battlefield.
- A gangly teenage Warlock whose demon doesn't think very much of him and who bashes things lots with a sword.
- A Kalashtar Cleric focused on debuffing enemies and healing allies.
- A Goblin Monk. 'Nuff said.

When the final party is picked, slight backstory adjustments might be made anyway depending on how the party wants to have met each other and what people might want to include in their own backstories from what I post on the known history of various regions, so it's not a problem.
Also what Horseshoe said!
In retrospect, I probably should have posted some actual history on the various regions for the recruitment post from the start (not going to do that now, what with people already having made up their characters and not being able to take advantage of it). But then again, there's like...a ton of different areas so that might have just unnecessarily lengthened the OP.

Rakash Arethas Dawnstrider, Longtooth Shifter Ranger|Seeker.
And if you think that's a mouthful, here's his background/description/backstory/wish, all rolled into one short story. My apologies in advance for the length of it; this is how my submissions go sometimes ><
On the one hand, there are the scattered towns and villages along the Harken River. These mostly human settlements are places of simplicity where the villagers fish the river and grow crops for food. Their location in the Vale has led many of them to worship Melora first among the many Gods. Melora uses her influence among mortals to ensure that the wild areas of the world are allowed to thrive alongside civilization; however, harvesting trees from the nearby Harken Forest keeps them warm throughout the winters and gives them building material for their homes.
On the other hand, there are the Woodsinger Elves and Dawnstrider Shifters in the Harken Forest. A great stretch of old forest that effectively forms the Nentir Vale's southern border, the Harken Forest has stood for hundreds of years longer than any human settlement. The races who inhabit it follow the spirit way; a set of principles anchored by the existence of very real spirits of ancestors past and the essences of the natural world.
In ancient times, when the Dawn War between the Gods and the primordials spilled into the natural realm, it was the spirits who protected the world from their cataclysmic struggle. And it was the power of those spirits that enforced their eventual decree; that both Gods and primordials were banished from direct contact with the natural world.
Such a close proximity of different cultures has led to war time and time again throughout history, but a clever observer can see that Melora's concerns and those of the spirit way are not all that different. Rakash is such an observer, and that combined with the dual nature of his race and his upbringing has given him a unique outlook on things.
Rakash Arethas Dawnstrider is tall for a shifter and has the wiry strength and feral instincts of their kind. His features are much more human-like than others of his tribe and as a youth he could pass as human without much effort. Such anonymity gave him the opportunity to be a major part of the woodland's rare trade with the humans of Harkenwold. It was there that he met the strongest influence of his life apart from his parents; a human ranger named Garlan Greencloak.
Through Garlan, the young shifter learned of the various Gods that the humans worshiped and of Melora in particular. He recognized immediately the similarities (in ideals, if not in appearances) between the self-styled God of the Wild and of the primal spirits he'd known for all of his young life. In return, he introduced Garlan to some of the human's own ancestor spirits, who weren't used to being called upon but were very pleased to be so.
The pair of them decided to do what they could to bring their cultures together, and as a result the Harken Forest and Harkenwold forged a budding alliance. The humans continued to harvest the forest for firewood, but adopted the practice of planting young seedlings (provided by the Elves) in their wake. In recognition of the increased workload of the humans, the Woodsinger Elves began to teach the humans how to craft the fallen wood easily, with song and grace instead of hammer and chisel. They also shared their secrets of how to rotate crops to keep farmlands from stagnation.
And lastly, the humans began to assist the Elves and the Shifters with their primary enemy; the goblin infestation based out of Daggerburg Keep, a crumbling Nerathi outpost in the southwest Harken Forest. Rakash and Garlan were an effective team and an incredible symbol; two men of different races thinking and acting as one, inspiring their respective communities with how easily they adopted and mirrored the other's tactics.
Until Garlan died.
Trailing a goblin troop that had been seen much further east in the forest than ever before, they stumbled into a second unit and were caught up in a fierce battle. Though the two were more skilled than any individual goblin, the sheer weight of attacks became too much for the pair to repel. Garlan fought as well with bow and sword as did Rakash with his long spear, but ultimately to no avail; Garlan fell, pierced by a pair of goblin arrows. Rakash, himself sorely wounded at the time, felt his ancestry assert itself in ways he'd never known before. In response to the overwhelming grief that threatened to send him to his knees, he instead succumbed to a dreadful rage. Calling upon martial technique and primal spirits alike he laid into the remaining goblins with such a fury that what few remained standing after the first minute fled westward to lick their wounds.
For the first time in living memory, a Human's death was as a Shifter's death to the Dawnstrider tribe, and Garlan's passing was mourned equally by Human and Shifter alike. In response, the combined peoples launched a massive counteroffensive against the goblins, driving them back to Daggerburg and then scattering them to the four winds.
Garlan's death was two years ago, and Rakash has had time to heal, both physically and emotionally. He has one wish, now; to honor his friend's courage and sacrifice for both their peoples by bringing their shared message to the rest of the world. And so it is that a Shifter leaves the Harken Forest with an unlikely combination of adornments; the primal symbols of his tribe tattooed on his flesh and a symbol of Melora, engraved on the reverse with a capital "G", hanging around his neck.
It's pretty late, but I think I'm going to search the internets for a more suitable picture. I'm probably also going to pick Backgrounds (and a generic Background Benefit) for Rakash based on all that.
A few words about Rakash, mechanically, since he's sort of a hodge-podge of elements. Right now at level 2 he's not too much of a Controller, but his Seeker at-will works awesomely to help the Defender keep important targets locked down. Later, when he picks up more Seeker powers (Encounter @ 3, Daily @ 5) he'll have more tools to make an enemy's day go from bad to worse.
I expect him to be a Striker most of the time but he can switch to a defensive support role when necessary. Not a Defender; more like a squishy protector/rescuer.
Unfortunately, he doesn't have now nor likely ever will have much in the way of blast/burst powers.

Lyedyn Soan, Elven Witch (Primal Predator Druid)
Her Story:
There she found her way into a circle of spirits who taunted her as she begged for their aid for her people and their home. The fey creatures agreed to aid her people if she would give herself to them. Taking advantage of her body they infused her with their power, twisting her form into that of a powerful dryad guardian for the forest and sending her to lay waste to the invading armies.
Their power, however, was of little use to Lyedyn's people - despire the power with which they infused her, the mass of the orc armies washed over her people and destroyed the majority of the forest. All that could be saved was a few survivors that fled to the forest's core where the power of the spirits was strongest and she could prevent enough of a threat to convince the orcs to find easier targets.
Once the Orcs had passed by, the spirits called for their bargain to be fulfilled and she gave herself for their use, heart and soul to stand as defender for their home. As the centuries passed, Lyedyn's body served to protect the sacred grove while her spirit was left in limbo. The last of her people moved on to new homes and her sacrifice was left unknown.
Something has changed in the last few years though. The spirits of the forest weakened and Lyedyn's spirit slowly began to reconnect with her body - at first just flashes of activity, but eventually full conciousness of her actions, followed by some limited control until eventually she began to retake her elven form and become fully conscious. For a decade she remained in the failing grove, defending her home against whatever minor threats came to pass until one day she felt her bonds with the forest fall away entirely and felt compelled to set out into the world.
Portrait:
Her beast form is that of a Briar Witch Dyrad. Her one wish would be to be reunited with the friends and family that she sacrificed herself to protect, though it would be doubtful if any of the survivors had remained alive as she stood watch over the forest.

Zettonar, a Deva Invoker. sheet
Background:
It may be just a distant memory, it may never even have happened, but to Zettonar, it was real. He had met, and spoken with, Avandra. And the most important thing: She was FUNNY.
Dealing out humor was one of the highest goods one could do, according to Zettonar. One who could, in the face of all the terror and fear and greed and evil in the world, make others forget about all that with laughter, was truly a force for good. The problem, to him, was the form. All these other races, their humor was nothing but crude indignity heaped upon crude indignity. It had bored Zettonar to tears, if he could be bothered to show them.
But Avandra...hers was superb. Such timing! Such material! From the moment he located that memory inside his head, he made it his mission to become as perfect at delivering laughs as she was. She has even blessed his mission, giving him powers to help survive in this wilderness.
Of course, one cannot write material in a vacuum. And so, to further hone his laughcraft, he heads out into the world to shine light through humor.
Appearance:
What would he do with a wish?
And, a token:

i'm talking setting context here
a huge point in history is the war with the orcs hundreds of years ago
you're able to live in civilized areas because you are half human
but you may very likely be the descendants of the half orc tribes that fought with the orcs
and were defeated
every statue, every song of celebration, every heroic tale
they will always remind you of this defeat, that you are the pathetic remains of the enemy
and it will remind the the non-orcs, and the descendants of the victors of this
and how your character deals with being born into such a thing
man that's fucking good stuff
