Well folks, I think its time for me to upgrade my computer and I need some help.

XyresXyres Registered User regular
Particularly my video card and my CPU. Before i get started i warn you i am not very savy with upgrading or what works best with what. I know what i need to but i have not been up to date in a while. Always a gamer never the tech.

For my CPU i have AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 3800+. From what i see under my device manager it seems like i have two of those.

And for my video card i have a GeForce 6800 GS.

Now I am looking to replace these two with something that will last a while and provide me with the ability to play games on med-high or high but all for a fair price. Any help or opinions would be great, and I am also able to buy from sites like tigerD or newegg. Thanks!

As far as I can tell all new quad cores are AM3

Could you elaborate a bit on what this means?

The new cpus will not fit into your motherbored. Somtimes they will make newer cpus that will fit in older slots. I am looking for something like that but the closest slot I have found is AM2+

    Socket AM22010340343 50001028 1051720996 (1)
    Socket AM2+2010340343 50001028 1051733662 (7)
    Socket AM32010340343 50001028 1051746439 (26)

Everything seems to be mostly AM3 slot. If you have an AM2+ slot then you could get a triple core.

Alright, so this would mean that i need a new motherboard? Well let me recap on what i need then. :P

    Motherboard
    CPU
    Video Card

Is there any other new things that would require replacements of the old ones? And also do you have any recommendations for those items on my list?

Not really but I am kinda a nut. When I start an upgrade like that I usually up the power supply and get new drives that support sATA.

    What is your price range?

You could throw a 6000+ AMD cpu in there.. Max the ram out and a new video card.

Find out if you have an AM2+ mobo.. Then you can do it under 300 for sure.

Not sure how to keep you in the 300 dollar range for a future proof mid range gaming rig. Even going AMD and ATI. Having to get a new mobo and ram is killer.

Alright well for a moment lets just say I don't have a price range. What would i get to make my computer run well without it costing me a ridiculous amount and how much would it cost?
