IRL MIRROR'S EDGE (the Pre-Pax Parkour Jam)

edited September 2010 in PAX Archive
TIME: Sept. 2 2010
1:00 pm

Where: FREEWAY PARK!

To anyone not from Seattle, Freeway Park is THE place to do parkour around seattle. If anyone wants to do some IRL mirror's edge post away and we'll set something up!

note: Freeway Park is also really dangerous for parkour.

Alright i'm gonna take a shot at showing you all what we will be doing that day.

1) Stretching
-Everyone will just stretch up until 1:15pm. Right at that we will begin warm-ups

2) Warm-ups
- Push-ups, frog jumps, jogging, crawling, jogging backwards, bear climbing up/down stairs, burpees (have fun)

going for at least 10-15 reps for each.

3) Random Drills
- basic vault, safety vault, speed vault, kong vault, dash vault (i suck at these sooo if anyone else does parkour please aid me in a demonstration)

- Landing/Rolling (This is a MUST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

- Cat hang drills, Jumping to Cat

- Jump percision

- Wall passes

-Balance Training!

4) Follow the leader/Just play around
-when we can we will commence a follow the leader type deal.

We also will need some rules for the jam

Rule 1: Don't be an asshole
-Don't go around insulting your fellow tracuer. I don't care if you think they are so big they have a gravitational pull. At the very least they are going out of their comfort zone to do this.

Rule 2: LOOK BEFORE YOU RUN/JUMP
-I have been injured doing parkour at Freeway Park because some kid tried running under me while i was in the middle of a jump. I can't stress this enough if you are DIRECTLY RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY INJURIES the whole parkour jam is allowed to whale on you until we are happy =D.

Rule 3: DO NOT OVER EXERT YOURSELF!
- Can't stress this enough. If you can barely keep a decent sprint or jump more than 2 feet off the ground don't try a backflip. If you don't think you can do it. Don't do it. I don't want ANY injuries whatsoever happening at this jam. Any trickers are welcomed to come but please to the rest of you around the trickers.... unless they are spotting/helping you directly, DO NOT IMITATE THEM.

Rule 4: Don't be an asshole
- I can't stress this enough

Rule 5: Don't be an asshole
- Really can't stress it enough

Rule 6: WE ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY INJURIES THAT OCCUR DURING THIS! BE VERY FREAKIN' CAREFUL OUT THERE!

Anyways my background in parkour:
I just do basic things; climbs, jumps, vaults. I don't do any tricking =/ too much of a scaredy cat to try inverting myself. I got injured a few years ago and am trying to get back into doing this. My goals are as follows:

-Get a standing backtuck
-Recover my ability to do long percision jumps
-Land a rail to rail percision
-Hold a plache for a minute

While I can't endorse this idea, I love parkour and would totally watch from some distance :)

Well, you are asking people who are going to a gaming convention. I really hate stereotyping, but...the majority of attendees do not have the body type for this, currently. So you're talking to a very small crowd of people who would initially be interested.

I don't know the preferred body type for Parkour is(like short/skinny) but there weren't a lot of overweight people at PAX. Overweight people were definitely the minority.

It's not just overweight, but you also have to have tremendous upper body strength as well, along with other stuff, otherwise, the jam will just be an exercis on conditioning, which isn't that fin to watch (or do for that matter)

not saying the regular attendees could do it, just saying that for why I think he has planned, he's not going to find many who are at that condition. I'm not, but I have been before, hence the rust comment.

i can safely say the reason i play video games so much is because of the injuries i recieve from doing parkour XFD. <_< anyways the parkour jam could be one where some of the tracuers could show basics.

May I suggest an Introduction to Parkour class for those interested? Possibly spread the fun and glory of the sport to whomever is willing to take the metaphorical (kind of) leap?

The local guys over at Parkour Visions love to spread their knowledge and firmly believe that anyone is capable of participating and enjoying themselves. Their gym is up in Freemont if this venue seems too challenging.

THAT was what I was logging in to suggest.

I would love to attend if there'd be someone there to teach me some basics. Granted, I have asthma, but I can move pretty well for short distances =P

Parkour = getting from point a to point b efficiently

Free Running = getting from point a to point b efficiently with flair (at least 13 pieces of it)

Ooooooh this makes me so jealous of everyone going to PAX Prime. I looove parkour (granted i'm not that great at it yet, but i'm practicing!) and it would be awesome if next year we could organize something like this for PAX East as well. Because then I'd definitely be able to attend and it'd make the entire weekend that much more awesome.

Does Parkour 101 begin on a rooftop like Mirror's Edge? Maybe a Matrix-style jump to start things off? Separate the wheat from the chaff?

Hmmm. I'll have to see how that works in with the MMT. That will probably still be going on.

No big deal. At least now I don't have to worry about doing something stupid and breaking a leg right before PAX.
