I Need To Destroy Some Weeds

My latest project is starting work on our patio in the back. Part of it is a small, roughly 3x4 patch of dirt that since we've moved here and have left to neglect. It's now almost completely consumed by a massive number of weeds. I need to know the best way to obliterate them. Worth noting is I don't want anything growing there period so I'm willing to take almost any means necessary that's still pet friendly.

HD/Lowes will both carry various chemical sprays designed to kill everything. Chop the weeds down to the base, spray the yard, don't let the pet into that area til the next day. Most everything should be dead within a week.

Three feet by four feet? I'd just get in there with a shovel and dig up the whole thing. Then put gravel on top. Maybe one of the weed barrier cloth deals underneath.

life's a game that you're bound to lose / like using a hammer to pound in screws
fuck up once and you break your thumb / if you're happy at all then you're god damn dumb
that's right we're on a fucked up cruise / God is dead but at least we have booze
bad things happen, no one knows why / the sun burns out and everyone dies

Alright, I ran down to the home and garden shop nearby and bought some weed killer to spray on what's left. Pulling them up turned out easier than expected since there was nothing prickly. I also ran a fork looking tool through it to help get everything exposed and pulled up.

There you go. Removing the root is the only way to truly kill a weed.

Remember that nature hates empty voids, and will quickly try to fill in any vacant area with an abundance of baby weeds. Spread down something like Preen (which may also be a fertilizer ... useless unless you've got landscaping around), or any kind of non-commercial pre-emergent. Ask for a pre-emergent at Lowes / lawn garden store, see what they got, read the label first, then buy according to what works for you. Given that it's just gravel and shit, a layer of weed fabric / barrier (NOT black plastic ... that stuff makes the soil shit, then frays into tiny pieces), gravel, and a pre-emergent on top, applied semi-regularly according to the label, will do wonders.

Just roundup the whole yard, wait a day or two and dig it out.

Why not just dig it out and save a step?

Because many weeds can come back from the smallest piece of root.

If you want to obliterate the space and render it unfit for plant growth, make a big bunch of saltwater and dump it on the spot. Note that future owners of the space will curse you if they plan on using it for anything other than dirt.

    Alternatively, pave it.

I think the digging and weed killer did it. We don't want to make it void of any life since the next people here might want to plant things. We just let it get super bad but now wanted it cleared out so the dog has a place to go potty late at night and it's the only non-cement part of our fenced patio and it's nice to not have to wlak him around the front yard on his leash at 12 am.
