Scenes of combat with sad music in the background is far cry from "a contemplative game with philosophical themes"
Are they pretentious and out-of-tone with the games? I'd say yes; but I wouldn't say they're deep.
Close ups of dead people frozen in ash with screams in their faces, a close up of a guy ready to die before his friend saves him... It suggests (to a big extent IMO) the idea of being something more than a visceral absolutely ridiculous action game without much brains in it's head (aside from the art direction) which is what Gears has always been.
So, is everyone assuming that 4 player co-op is local? Cause... I don't know. Could the 360 handle four seperate screens running this shit? The scale-down would be massive.
Who the hell plays local co-op anymore? If there are four people in your house you've got better things to do than stare at the tiny 3x3'' quadrant that is your character and shoot at shit you can barely see.

Well, you do see people dying in the game screaming...
...and you save your friends in gears games

I still think you're ascribing too much weight to these trailers.
I'm a film guy and I've made my own music videos so that's probably why I analyze it harshly. Rendevous with death was one of the best game commercials ever, not to mention capturing the tone of the games perfectly, and I wish they could have done something to that level for the Gears 3 announcement trailer.

But it's never in a somber, reflective, emotional tone. That's the big difference. The music changes everything.

Some people have big TV's.
I do too, but local co-op is still a pretty dumb idea. Not when there's things like Rock Band, sports, and movies which are better uses of a giant tv.

I wouldn't buy Gears 3 if it didn't have local Co-Op. I play these games with my girlfriend almost exclusively on local co-op. If they didn't have it i wouldn't even be remotely tempted to purchase it.
I'm also harsh on the trailers because me and Cliff are best friends as seen here:
that's so awesome

Fuck it, I'll go back for Gears 3. The Gears 2 multiplayer community didn't entirely fill my head with dark, horrible thoughts about the franchise, and 4-player co-op sounds like a blast.
Also calling it now, one of the Carmine brothers will show up, kick uncountable amounts of arse, and actually survive, in order to break tradition.

no no no no
They'll be the 2 Carmine twins
and one will die making the other go suicidal and kamikaze the locust queen
EDIT: Or we could have a saving private Ryan scenario... 3 brothers that die and you go save the last one that's MIA.

The plot could be about the Locust/Lambent and the COG entering a Brumak rodeo contest for all I care, as long as we see more Carmine(s). They've been the most enjoyable characters of the last two games for me.

Prediction:
Anya dies and Marcus goes super saiyan, unlocking his half-locust DNA and ripping off the locust queen's head with his prehensile dong.

I never finished GoW1 but me and my friend played threw GoW2 co-op and it was probably one of my most enjoyable experiences in gaming... so if 3 can deliver that awesome fun again, i'm up for it...
I've always had a soft spot for Gears; it's gray and overly macho and always ends up with grossly simplified stories that sound like they're written by a high-school football team, but motherfucker, is it fun. I'm definitely in.

I dunno:
Seeing Marcus blow his own wife's brains out sorta hit me in the gut. That made the Locust evil with a capital "E" for me, sorta like how the Broodmother level made the Darkspawn evil with a capital "E" in Dragon Age; they both went from normal, horrific demihuman bullet/sword fodder to real monsters who need to die.

I got one guy who I offered Prince of Persia (the good one, this was a few years ago,) and he was like "I like play anything fantasy, that's gay."

Yeah what the hell kind of question is that? My wife and I play local co-op all the time. I also have a friend who comes over all the time to play games.
What I get from this is the COG is even more despirate than before.
From a strictly utilitarian standpoint, in a post-apocolyptic world, you can't afford to have females doing much else than breeding if you really want your species to survive. Karen Travis touches on this in her novels. With the high mortality rate, you need a high birthrate well above the usual 2.1 kids per female just to stay stable in idea conditions.
It irks me how Anya keeps changing appearances in every game. She looked pretty homely in the first one, then turned into a stick-thin super model of sorts, and now looks like a battle-hardened soldier.

Does this mean she's the only dynamic character in the Gears games? Can this be the result of the writer(s) just forgetting about her?
Quite possibly. No one else seems to change, despite everyone dying around them.
More new stuff, starting to get into spoiler territory.
Apparently the COG have disbanded, making everyone essentially a standed. The Locust have not been seens since Gears of War 2 (well, except when they were seen in Jacinto's Remnant.)
Also, the story is apparently being written by Karen Traviss, which is probably the best story related news we can hear. A lot of people may disagree with her work on Star Wars, but Traviss managed to take an game with no real plot to speak of, and one dimensional characters, and actually make something with a little depth in it.
Oh yeah, apparently we'll be get to control a squad at some point that doens't contain the main characters (i.e. Marcus and Dom)

Some of you take Gears and it's story and trailers a tad too seriously. Gears is what it is: A completely mindless, and gorgeous, blow everything up in your path awesome fest. The trailers are always very well done, even if they aren't 100% representative (and you show me a trailer that is 100% representative, and I'll say this is Bizarro world).
The mad world trailer/commercial is one of the best video game spots of all time. It single-handedly made me care about Gears, when at the time, I couldn't have cared less.
