All I'm hoping for is that the explanation for the Locust and how they are connected to the humans is more nuanced then "No Marcus, you are the Locusts!"
Or "The Locust were a secret COG project that went awry!"
Honestly, if I had to guess, I'd say that the connection between the two lies in the Queen. My guess is, while the Locust species may have been human ages and ages ago, they're their own separate species and civilization now; and were probably locked in combat with the Lambent for ages; never bothering to go to the surface.
Later, COG scientists discover the Locust and the mutagenic properties of Immulsion, and start messing with it, producing the monstrous Sires. Eventually they refine the process to create the "Children," of which, one eventually went on to become the Queen. Either because of something the COG scientists did, or because she was just an apt leader, she started leading the Locust.
Seeing as their was no end to the war with the Lambent, the Queen, with a bit of human help (i.e. Adam Fenix) decided with the plan to flee to the surface and flood the hollow. This plan was risky because it would give the Lambent a definite advantage while the Locust troops were divided.
I could kinda see an alliance working
Both Species have lost their capital cities / tunnels
both are desperate to destroy the Lambent (athough humans are in a much worse postion)
That doesn't mean I'll like it if it happens though
the dead ash people in the trailer were Hammer of Dawn victims, we did that to ourselves
explain pls
You know, the massive hammer of dawn strike that the humans did to their own cities as asset denial? It's the reason Stranded are called Stranded, and why they hate the COG. They scorched most of the planet outside of Jacinto.
the dead ash people in the trailer were Hammer of Dawn victims, we did that to ourselves
Well, the COG's are basically a fascist regime. They even tell you in the mining level "you gears are all just facist pigs" (I know Gears don't = COG).
So I wouldn't exactly put it past them that they thing Hammering a city of civilians is a good idea to stop some invading locust.
I acutally not similarities between the Nazi's and the COG
I still like the Gears 1 explanation where we totally fucked ourselves up and the Locust are all RAAARGH WHAT THE HELL DID YOU DO TO MY PLANET YOU DON'T DESERVE IT
all this lambent nonsense kind of takes away from the strong plot point that we brought all this upon ourselves, and that extinction in the locust war is the natural conclusion of the road humans chose to walk
Uh, I fail to see anywhere in Gears 1 where that was the case. Hell, the Locust didn't even attack until AFTER the Pendulum Wars had ended and peace was achieved.
The Pendulum Wars were pretty bad and damaged the environment, even before that Sera was used to fighting wars constantly. I assumed the locust didn't want the dirty surface-dwellers to go even deeper and start fighting over imulsion again.
also i really would like to know why everybody is still a private

It's kinda wierd that even with the crazy plot and the testosterone fueled shoot-fest, I still liked Gears 2. There was this atmosphere of tiredness and desperation that hooked me, like Fenix was just wishing for a hot shower and eight hours of sleep, but had to continue on because there was simply nobody else to do the job. That, coupled with the feeling of "if something doesn't change soon, we're all pretty much hosed." just kept me interested all the way through the game.
Gears of War 1 was the most fun I had online with my 360; playing with the PA crew. People like BladeOfSanjuro, Phosphene and NeuralFizz. Most of them are gone now though. That + being unemployed = tons of hours online.
In comparison, I think I had one good morning of several hours in Wingman for GoW2 with NeuralFizz, and that's the only thing that sticks out in my mind. Other than splitscreening with one of my real life friends.
I'm still here! Also, I still remember that day of Wingman; it was the first day I actually played for more than 1 match and we won a ton. It was great.

But you're making up your own motivations for the Locust. As far as we know, they're as destructive towards the environment as the humans.

I think, alliance wise, it would be similar to how things looked in the trailer. The Locust are at war with humanity still, but when there's some Lambent around they choose to shoot them instead.
I saw the trailer today along with some info about Gears of War 3 and all I can say is that there is something really awesome waiting for me in 2011. I am a huge fan of the Gears of War franchise. I liked the first one which was the first Xbox 360 game that I had ever played and the second one was a huge improvement from the first. Gears of War 2 had a better and longer campaign, more refined controls, more finishers, meat shields, more weapons, horde mode, and other wonderful improvements.
I'm definitely going to make sure I have an extra $60 with me in April of next year so that I can pick up that game. I'll probably won't be able to get to play it that much at first cause I'll still be in college but whatever.

How long is GoW2 single player? Can I get it done on normal in a few hours? It's just going to be a rental.

I'm getting annoyed at co-op campaigns because they're too short to be a full epic experience, but just too long to play through in a marathon sitting.
And man I hope they improve Horde mode can you don't have to turtle using the boomshields to stand a chance on every 10th wave, and so that the sniper rifle isn't fucking useless on any difficulty above casual.
Also I never had problems with the netcode. I find netcode complaints the lamest because they are the easiest to make. No, your internet connection is not made out of God's tears. It's the same netcode as Unreal Tournament 3.

Plus, they were trying to turn Dom's wife in to a Locus. Remember the metal chambers they were holding humans in, piping in some kind of poison gas? It was turning them in to Locus.
Wait really? Now that I didn't know. Where was that said or written, because I definitely missed that part.
It was implied. If they wanted to just kill the humans, they could have just killed them....but they weren't. They were trapping them in those chambers, and pumping it full of some strange gas. Did you see Dom's wife when she came out? She was like half way between human and Locus.
I don't really know about that, but to be honest it's crazy enough that it is probably true or at least has a good chance of being true.
Can you think of a better explanation as to why they would put all the humans in those chambers, rather than just killing them? Either they were trying to turn them in to Locus, or they were using them as some kind of living experiment.
They are Locust that have become infused with that liquid fuel like stuff that they live near. Apparently it gives them enhanced regenerative powers and some other unusual abilities. They turn up once in Gears of War 2 and then aren't really used again.

Housing the slaves.
In one of the books or comics it explains what they did to maria, they tortured her, starved her, and lobotomized her. Which is why she looked tortured, starved, and brain dead. No mention of any experiments.
They could just be evil and brutal monsters, torturing them for fun. Certainly looked like that was all they were doing to the "processed" humans in Tai's comic.

Locust mutated by Imullision. (The juice, as Cole likes to put it.). At lower levels, it just makes the locust glowy and explody; at higher levels of exposure it turns them into mutating tentacle monstrosities.

And they're at war with the regular Locust? Is that correct? I stopped playing the game shortly after the gang enters the devils lair. Just after Dizzy does his thing.
I've always had a soft spot for Gears; it's gray and overly macho and always ends up with grossly simplified stories that sound like they're written by a high-school football team, but motherfucker, is it fun. I'm definitely in.
that, and the fact that a shotgun blast, instead of killing somebody, will blow them into chunks like they were simply slabs of meat sewed together at the seams
gears of war, to me, makes gore into an art- the sound design particularly is something game designers should look at for inspiration. the sniper rifle makes this brilliant thin POW, and when it makes a headshot you get a sound like somebody is breaking an egg with a claw hammer. the basic shotgun sounds like somebody is letting off fireworks in a puddle of mud, even the basic assault rifle sounds like it's firing bricks
It's actually a pretty decent question. IIRC, feminist groups got pissy when id Software put female character models in deathmatch for Quake II. I imagine somebody is going to try and so how this game is demeaning towards women because you can mutilate their bodies, completely ignoring how you mutilate men exactly the same way.

Yep; though in the first game Lambent wretches seemed to be working alongside normal Locust. 'course those wretches also glowed blue instead of yellow.
Love the trailer (Gears 1-3 all have excellent trailers, commercials, etc) but I fired up Gears2 last night and found the targeting very "loose" in the sense that without a sniper rifle you can't get the crosshairs centered where you wish. After playing more recent shooters I found this very annoying and couldn't play more than 20mins of the game. Anyone know what I'm talking about or did I just wuss out to quick for my brain to re-adjust to the games controls?

According to the Gears of War 1 artbook, it is descended from an ape.
Both Species have lost their capital cities / tunnels

PS- To those not in the know, he did survive Gears of War 2. Unlike that pussy Tai.

Yes. Ten hours, tops, and that's if you die a lot.
