Lyedyn realises that her cover in the bushes is blown as the twitcher's javelins go sailing past her. Letting Motac take point, she slinks forward. trying to get a good look at the creatures atop the rise. Spotting the mystic struggling to free itself from Rakash's spear she crouches down to concentrate her powers. A great bird of flame springs up before her, and begins it's flight up the rise. Unfortunately, just as the bird is about to reach it's target, Motacs paws graze across a bubble of fetid swamp gas, sending a plume of mud over Lyedyn, breaking her concentration and causing her flames to disperse without any effect.

Move: Lyedyn to F16, Motac to H13.

The Myrmidon stumbles briefly as the dagger implants itself into its rotting body. Shaking that off it then seems to pause, as if surveying the situation. When Motac comes into view up the hill it croaks, spewing a vile liquid towards Lyedyn's companion. Fortunately, the displacer beast's glamour causes the croak to go off-target and the Myrmidon is left there without much to show for its effort. Rather than attack though, it moves down toward Snarl and then abruptly stops, planting its decaying, webbed feat into the ground as if preparing to strike.

Atherton stabs the bullywug at his side efficiently, and the blade's vibrations thanks to the spell he uses expand and shield him from harm as he advances on the rest of the undead. The young Swordmage wrinkles his nose as he nears the stinking Myrmidon, and he casts one of his irritation charms on the beast. The croaker on the other side of the tree from him is mostly ignored.

"What is that thing, Aidan?" he asks as he gets a better look at the Vine Horror, the disgust on his fine features quite obvious.

"Not a clue, Atherton. If I had ta guess, I'd say... something that we're gonna kill soon," Aidan replies. He moves forward to get in range of the marked bullywug, and throws a spear of spiritual brambles at the myrmidon as Nadia materializes into existence. Unfortunately, the elevation throws off his aim and the spear sails harmlessly wide.

    Round 2!

With your party advancing up the slope, the twitcher has a host more targets to choose from. It readies a pair of javelins and with haphazard, jerking movements slings them out one after the other toward you. Lyedyn's position at the base of the slope allows her ample enough time to duck down out of the way, catching only the dripping acid for her trouble. Snarl, still reeling from the acid rain thrown at him by that disgusting vine horror, can give some thanks to Motac as the displacer beast being in the path of the shot deflects the javelin away with his hind tendril. As the rest of you continue your assault, the Tree's movements becomes more disturbed, its branches swaying back and forth and its exposed roots crawling over each other as if the thing is preparing for another ponderous move.

Drawing his new spear, Rakash moves to complement Atherton's advance. He can't see the Croaker that threatens him, not through the tree, but nevertheless he knows it is there. Charging the rest of the distance to the willow he comes to a stop against it's trunk, spear suddenly flashing out around it. His guess is accurate, barely, but enough to send the Croaker to the ground.

All of a sudden the large tree atop the hill shakes in a loud cacophony of groaning wood and snapping branches. Its roots race down the slope from the summit carrying its twisted, rotted trunk through a patch of grasping bog and toward he bullywugs below. Its momentum then shifts into its upper branches as its trunk twists to bring them crashing down on the party surrounding it. A pair of branches slam into the ground where Nadia had been, the spiritual guide standing no chance against such a violent assault and dissipating instantly in a puff of smoke. Not yet done, however, it whips around another large branch, catching Motac square on the jaw and shoving the displacer beast back into the Feywild in an explosion of leaves.

The remaining Croaker then turns its rotting (or missing chunks of) head toward the defender that has sallied up to interject himself between the Myrmidon (and now Tree) and Snarl. It tries a direct approach of a charge, but having done so from the front, Atherton can see him coming a mile away and simply sidesteps the attack with ease.

As Snarl catches his breath and seeks out the best opportunity to strike and hopefully strangle one of these dead things, with or without a neck, the Vine Horror begins to cause a stir atop the plateau. Hard to make out from your current position, but the blackened, despoiled ground seems to be feeding the creature a tangible energy through the Horror's roots, leeching up into the waving tentacle.

Still, you catch a reprieve as the monstrous leader simply sways back and forth, keeping a watchful eye on your approaching group. Still, Aidan and Atherton both get an unsettling feeling about the upper plateau's ground and with both the Horror and Bullywug staying up there, they appear in prime spot to take advantage of the corrupted soil.

Defiled Ground (Fantastic Terrain) - Undead gain a +1 bonus to rolls to recharge their powers while on defiled ground. In addition, if an undead creature is reduced to 0 hit points while on defiled ground, roll a d20; on a 10 or higher, the undead creature rises with 1 hit point on its next turn. If radiant damage reduces an undead creature to 0 hit points, it can’t rise again in this manner.

"Motac! No!" Lyedyn screams as the tree smacks it's branches into her companion. Diving across the mud, she tries to reach for him as he disappears into the fey and finds herself caught up in the powerful energies of his departure. Green lights flashes around her, obscuring her appearance and her anger feeds into the energies, resulting in a spectacular explosion.

Lyedyn's grief at Motac's quick disappearance back into the Feywild distracts her from the sheer quickness this sick tree seems to be able to bring when it wills it. Even a simple action as diving across the mud catches the druid off-guard as a branches whips out from the trees form and knocks the breath clean out of her. She regains enough composure to pepper the creature with thorns but now finds herself uncomfortably close to a tree that seems to be able to turn on a dime with extremely accurate (and painful thuds). She does, however, have the presence of mind to notice the Vine Horror sending a ball of slime pelting her way. It hits her clean across the upper torso, but the elf's constitution and quick reaction of wiping off the mud prevents the slime from affecting her in any negative way. Meanwhile, the Vine Horror remains rooted to the ground, unable to move, a testament to your own magical strength.

From across the battlefield, though, an explosion of magic is signalled by a loud shattering reminiscent of broken glass. The Myrmidon has managed to quickly aim a charge clear into Atherton before twirling his way around in a circle back to the side of the Tree, but this time in the path of Snarl. Atherton's ward is overloaded by the powerful club strike and he still sustains a bruise to his arm, but the blunted attack could have been much worse.

    * Swamp squares are difficult terrain for creatures without Swampwalk or a Swim Speed.
    * Trees provide Concealment against non-adjacent attacks while within their squares. All trees are 3x3 with the centre square of the trunk being blocking terrain.
    * The Rock Walls of the hill require climbing to scale them. They are uneven, but slippery, and as such require a DC 20 Athletics check to scale.
    * Light brown squares are Grasping Bog. Grasping Bog is difficult terrain and any creature that falls prone in a square of grasping bog is Restrained (save ends).
    * The top level of the hill (black stuff) is covered in Defiled Ground. It grants a +1 bonus to monster recharge rolls and any undead creature that dies on the ground rolls a d20: on a 10+ they instead rise with 1 hit point.

A quickly thrown shield protects Lyedyn from the brunt of the Tree's attack, and Atherton pulls that energy back to him, using it to enhance his simple strike at the simple bullywug before him. It falls with a low gurgle, and once more the Swordmage weaves the dissipating energies to his own ends, forming another protective shield around him.

Abruptly, he vanishes, reappearing in the thick of the melee, looking to take advantage of the opening Lyedyn created with her vicious, rending attack. His magic fails to take hold, and the spell designed to warp the Anchor Tree from one side of the Swordmage to the other fizzles at the last moment, leaving Atherton with his longsword poised over the grasping swamps, indicating the point at which he wanted the thing to teleport.

"Snarl, hit the bullywug," he urges, falling back on his secondary plan - to transfer his defensive magics to confound the Tree's aim, hoping that the half-orc can finish off the Myrmidon quickly.

Nadia pops into existence behind the tree as Aidan walks closer. "Atherton! Strike there!" Nadia encourages, and the swordmage heeds her guidance, striking a blow on the myrmidon in front of him that throws the creature off balance. Aidan then draws upon the power of the demon flowers to bring rage to both Snarl and Rakash, who each charge the first things in front of them. Snarl reaches the rotting myrmidon first and disembowels the creature with a sweep of his knife, and it falls to the ground permanently dead. Rakash tries to match the success of Snarl, but his foot catches on a root and he barely avoids tumbling to the ground and stabbing himself with his spear.

Snarl rushes at the Myrmidon and cuts it down in short order, but as he is running the Tree twists once again with unanticipated speed. Branches begin to fall, aiming to crush Snarl before he can even reach the Bullywug. The Half-orc ducks under the first large branch as it crashes into the ground behind him and then immediately jumps while maintaining his speed as a second branch follows the first, aimed at his legs. Using the momentum from his jump, he twists in mid-air before landing with a sickening THUD, the hilt of his short sword buried in the Myrmidon and rendering it dead for real.

Opportunity Action: Pounding Branches (Melee 2, when an enemy within 2 squares uses an attack power which does not target the Anchor Tree) at Snarl, 1d20+10-2=17, Miss! vs Reflex.

While Snarl manoeuvres around the tree into prime stabbing position, the Twitchers arms jerk out in a pair of quick motions, lobbing another couple of acidic spears at the party. Snarl catches one square in the shoulder, spilling burning acid on his upper body and adding to his litany of other injuries. Atherton's ward manages to deflect the second of the two projectiles, sending it cartwheeling further down the hill, while also absorbing the acid droplets raining briefly down. The rest of you also smell burning bark as droplets of acid from such short throws inevitably land on the branches of the large tree that has you so concerned.

This whole time, Rakash's eyes have barely moved from the Mystic, still locked to the upper ground by his longspear. He feels a simmering heat rising from the blade of his newly acquired weapon and with a burst of speed moves out from his cover.

Skirting the Anchor Tree's extended reach he runs up under the cliff face, marking the Vine Horror's position above in his mind. Shifting nimbly up the slope and through the tendril-filled bog he abruptly comes back into sight of the Mystic, up close and personal as he thrusts with the shimmering blade. The blow strikes true, steel bursting into flame as the blade pierces the center of the abomination, sizzling and setting afire the creature's many vines and tendrils. Not yet satisfied with the carnage, he moves on the hilltop to a spot ten feet apart from both the Horror and the last Bullywug. Spinning in place he slashes out with the very tip of his spear, landing a pair of glancing yet precise cuts to both enemies, sending them crashing to the ground.

Still not finished he whirls again, delivering a max-range thrust into both of the downed assailants. The thrust directed at the Mystic severs the largest remaining tendril in half, flame licking up both ends and reducing the creature to ash which disperses on the rank swamp wind. When the blade's tip pierces the Bullywug, a surge of flame roars over the undead creature, searing it's flesh and leaving it reeling in pain.

The sudden presence of fire melting the Vine Horror to ash causes the Anchor Tree to howl in high-pitched, terrible agony. Its branches begin to move erratically and quickly, large trunks randomly flailing into the ground as if the creature itself had gone crazed at the sight of fire. First, a portion of its trunk turns toward Atherton and Lyedyn, opening up a wound in its side and spewing forth several black projectiles. Atherton's magical wards once again deflect any harm coming his way, but even as Lyedyn's form itself is undetectable, the indiscriminate bombing catches the elf nonetheless draining the life from her body and leaving her movements sluggish.

But the flailing branches of the tree are not yet finished. Atherton's magical prowess has held him in good stead so far as he attempts to lessen the amount of pain inflicted by these undead. However, the tree's quick and berserk flailing simply overpowers all of his magical reserves and reflexes. Branches begin to crash down all around him, seeking to flatten him into the dirt. Several the swordmage manages to avoid, but the continuing torrent eventually prevails: the first connecting blow from a branch shatters his protective ward, slamming into his shoulder with a sickening crunch. Set off-balance, the second impact follows soon after and smashes into his chest knocking the wind from him and nearly sending him to the ground in a heap.

With the foes arrayed before the party now numbering only two remaining, it seems the Anchor Tree is making up for lessened allies by sheer brute force.

Lyedyn staggers forward as the tree's foul projectiles break through her camouflage, but rather than slowing her down, the black gloop merely provides more fuel to her anger. Letting the rage take hold, she hurls herself at the tree, ripping at the bark and twisting branches together. Satisfied with that for the moment, she scrambles away up the rise, looking for the mystic who was flinging magics at her earlier.

Seeing Rakash standing over the creature's dead body, Lyedyn grunts and pushes past him, running over the remaining bullywug, kicking wildly into the creature until her rage is spent and the draining effects of anchor tree's attack begin to take their toll.

Runes flare, and the lifesapping blast from the huge tree has the force of the blow blunted by Atherton's enchanted armour. The markings on his shoulderpads slowly fade and darken as the shielding charm is spent.

Maneuvering into a slightly advantageous position, Atherton then doggedly attempts to drag the Anchor Tree into the dangerous quicksand. His thrust is sure, but the magic fails to take hold, and his spell of entanglement fizzles against the monster's bark.

"Chin up, old boy," he tells Snarl, as he sidles into position beside the half-orc. "One still has a few tricks on one's sleeve, so to speak."

This time, the runes on his vambraces glow, and the Swordmage's near-invisible arcane shield expands to cover a much wider area, Snarl included. Atherton grits his teeth against the pain, and prepares himself for the next incoming blow.

Intent on clearing the hilltop, Rakash steps back and sideways until his path to the Twitcher is clear. Charging forward, infused by Aidan's rage, he stabs the prostrate Twitcher and shoves his spear forward, flicking outward and launching the Twitcher up and over the hill's edge.

The Twitcher tries in vain to hang on to the edge of the cliff, but the sheer momentum behind Rakash's charge sends the undead creature sailing off to land with a crunch down below. Meanwhile, Atherton and Nadia each dodge out of the way of a number of branches slamming into the ground, attempting to crush them into paste as the Tree's senses slowly come back to it.

Lyedyn grunts in frustration as Rakash's charge sends her prey tumbling down the hillside. Her anger quickly turning to frustration, she shifts out of her beastial form and gestures at the ground where she expects the twitcher to land, calling the swamp to rise up in spikes to hopefully impale the creature. Unfortunately, she misjudges the force of the blow and the twitcher slides to a halt just short of her trap.

Aidan fumbled around in his pouches, looking for the flowers he had taken from the bullywugs in a previous encounter. Finally, finding one tucked away next to some rations and some particularly interesting twigs, Aidan pulls it out. Breathing gently on the petals, he uses his connection with Nadia to transmit his magic to Snarl, causing the acid pestering the half orc to evaporate away. Buoyed by this, and with Nadia attempting to distract the tree, Snarl tries for an opportunistic attack, but several branches swish back in his direction and the rogue is forced to pull back.

There was a sudden flurry of motion as Snarl's feet left the ground. Atherton was not exactly sure how the orc had interpreted his urging... but Snarl had managed to whip his rope around the tree's trunk and a great many of its rotten branches. The tree creaked and groaned as its wood was strained by the power of Snarl's mighty thews, and its wood and bark began to splinter.

Unconsciously, the swordmage may have mouthed the words: He's strangling a tree?

    move: sheathe dagger

    Round 5!

Snarl's rope initially fits around the tree's trunk and branches, snapping bark and splinters as it bit in hard. But then the half-orc felt a sickening punch in his gut from out of nowhere, the force of the impact sending him sailing ten feet backwards to rebound off the stone cliff and into a section of that grasping mud. The Tree is very vengeful, it seems, and a small glowing black field that had formed in Snarl's previous position can now be seen dissipating quickly, as if some kind of natural defense mechanism protecting the necromantic anchoring tree.

The Twitcher quickly takes advantage of this situation, hopping spasmodically back and forth so fast that Snarl can't get a firm grip on where the creature's going to strike. Then he feels it as it stabs him in the shoulder, nearly dropping him into the darkness as unconsciousness fights to claim him.

    ---

Sapping Vengeance (Free Action, Close Burst 5, when an enemy within 5 squares hits the Anchor Tree) - Snarl takes 5 Necrotic damage (5 resisted) and is pushed to F10, breaking the grab.

    Rotting Bullywug Twitcher
    Move Action: Stand Up.
Standard Action - Spasmodic Hop: Twitcher shifts to F11 before attacking Snarl, 1d20+11=23, Hit! vs AC. Snarl takes 2d8+7=12 damage and suffers -4 Attacks vs Twitcher until the end of the Twitcher's next turn.

The Tree shambles forward, its roots crashing upon the ground as it tries to get its branches in range of more of your fellow party members. Large thick extensions of its canopy then come crashing down to try and crush both Atherton and Rakash. While Atherton's dexterity allows him to dodge yet more tree trunks, Rakash's hasty positioning causes him to catch one of the impacts across the shoulder, bruising muscle and nearly cracking bone.

After dodging the tree's branches, Atherton notices the danger Rakash faces, and manages to interpose a deflecting shield between the Shifter and the tree monster. The strike is blunted, but not entirely stopped by the Swordmage's efforts.

Still, it's better than a branch to the face.

    Immediate Interrupt: Aegis of Shielding
--> Atherton prevents 8 damage to Rakash, 3 dealt total.

Lyedyn dives through the bog beside her, ignoring the stench of the mud as she feels her way through it. Laying down energy lines as she moves, she tries to create a sympathetic bond between the bog around her and the similar patch behind the twisted tree. As she rises out of the muck, she reaches deep, carrying handfuls of mud with her as she goes.

Her brow furrowed in concentration she clenches tight to the mud in he fists before thrusting her hands into the air, spraying sludge about her. In answer, the ground around the tree and the remaining bullywug flares up, swallowing the twitcher into the dirt and tearing bark and branches off the tree as it is covered in the putrid slime.

Atherton grits his teeth, and takes a chance. He maneuvers between the tree and remaining bullywug, readying himself for a stinging blow from the Anchor Tree, and then thrusts his sword into the air with a word of power.

Aidan quickly runs up the hill, his feet finding purchase easily on the steep slope. Nadia turns and thrusts her spear into the Twitcher, but the creature simply stands there, dumbly, its undead persistence keeping it on its feet. Snarl however takes the chance to slip away from the creature, closer to Aidan, where he receives some much needed healing.

    Round 6!

It takes a lot of effort, and multiple times of trying to crush the bullywug into the ground, but finally the Twitcher stops moving and collapses into a pile of rotting flesh and bones. All of this work is not without its share of danger, however, as tree limbs from the very quick Anchor Tree smash and pound into the ground in a flurry to try and exploit every distracted movement that it can find. Miraculously, not a single one of these branches land and you are all left with simply the tree to deal with...a very pissed off looking tree.

Rakash backs away from the Anchor Tree, remembering now that one of his spears still lies on the hilltop. Retrieving it, he replaces both spears in his harness and considers his options. The tree is already sorely wounded... a few more strikes should kill it. Or whatever passes for killing it, anyway.

Charging down the hill while drawing and setting his fire-blackened spear in one smooth motion he once again halts in the middle of the Grasping Bog, spear flicking out across the distance. Weaving the point between Nadia and Atherton, he is rewarded with a solid thunk as the spearhead penetrates deep into the rotting treebark, woodchips flying from the force of the impact.

Setting the tree alight elicits probably the most terrifying sound you've heard in quite some time. Just piercing it with the magical, withering spear in your hand elicits a high-pitched wail that persists, that you recall later, for the rest of this battle as the tree's canopy shakes and waves, branches pounding randomly as it tries in vain to put out the spreading wildfire. Fire spreads quickly and in response the tree rushes south before an explosion of necromantic energy boils forth, a release partially driven by desperation or even simply due to the tree being out of control. Atherton and Snarl both stave off the worst of the effects, their magics protecting them, but they still feel slightly drained and Snarl in particular nearly on the brink.
