Here is a Dragonborn Paladin I painted to make a paper mini for a fellow adventurer:

dragonborn_paladin_color.jpg

It ends up looking something like this (little over an inch tall):

Dragonborn_mini.jpg

much cheaper than buying those metal mini's and if I want to change something, its no problem.

That's cool. I've thought about trying something similar. Do you just print them out on cardstock?

At this point, if just used normal paper (prints better) and pasted it on card stock. I mirror the image, so it has the reverse on the other side (too lazy to paint the back). I leave tabs at the bottom to fold flat, which I glue to another piece of card stock for the base, then glue on a washer for some weight.

For my next one, I think I'm gonna print it on some glossy photo stock for a better print as well as a little more thickness. I'm also trying to think of some way to add more of a 3D aspect to it with a little papercraft. For instance, I'd like to take this character's pick and turn the head so it faces sideways. Perhaps mount it on a piece of paperclip or something.

In kinda surprised I don't see more of this kinda stuff around, being how expensive the mini's are. I heard from someone else that they found base pieces specifically designed for paper and also sheets of generic figures you could either cut out or pop out, but Ive never seen them in a store or online (he got them a long time ago)

Glad to see another player in the bunch!

Pretty neato, though I would've probably wanted to see a few more harder edges here and there.

I'm sure it just nitpicky for something that is going to be printed so small anyways.

I don't so much mind the lack of hard edges, considering it's going to be printed at a small size, but the head is really, really flat. Some of the colours seem a bit over-saturated too.

    Otherwise, I like it. :^:

(I still have my 4e core set sitting next to my bed, unused. I gave it a shot once, but me and my friends spent three hours trying to figure out how to make our characters then gave up.)

Kind of off-topic here but the free character builder from Wizards of the Coast makes character building super easy as long as you understand the basics so that you can make informed decisions. It takes all of the math and bookkeeping out of your hands so you're not worrying about adding bonuses correctly and whatnot. I think the free version covers you for levels 1-3 and then you can pay the monthly Insider fee to upgrade to the full version.

I've been playing in the weekly D&D Encounters program at a local comic shop. It's designed to be a drop-in game where you play a single combat encounter each week with 12 weeks of encounters making up a "season" and then a new season starts. Tonight we had an UGLY fight against a bunch of dire rats, a rat swarm, and some sort of annoying clay golem thing. Definitely worth looking into if you want to try the game out. There's a search feature on the WotC site where you can find local stores running the Encounters program.

That's a really great dragonborn, chewie. One of my minor quibbles with a lot of the dragonborn art out there is that they tend to make them look a bit barbaric or x-treem - lots of leather and loincloths and so on - when personally I think they make a really great fit for the sort of old-school heroic look you've got here.

You can be a humongous nerd like me and join a 4e post by post game over in critical failures.

I like this Dragonborn character - works perfectly as a paper mini. Good stuff!

I am currently rather obsessed with D&D but have never played (well, actually not since high school). I bought the Players Handbook and have created characters for fun with the Character Builder.

    Quite sad really.

Anyway, I put the feelers out to some of my friends who have slightly more geekier tendancies or have gamed in the past, and it looks like I may actually get to run a game at some point.

Scos, I've been following your adventure in the CF forum. It looks fun, I'd be up for joining a PbP if one comes available...

Aw man, I love do-it-yourself game pieces. Nice job.

You can buy some "game card stands" for about six cents each from gameparts.net, but the catch is that you have to buy them in quantities of 1000!

Seems like those would work, but not be quite as stable as your homemade disc. Also, wouldn't it be easier to print it on a heavier weight paper, then fold it over on itself, like the old cardboard heroes sheets?

Also: this lithium is pretty neato!

    This is really cool man.

I love the artwork and the idea of making it into a mini.

Makes me want to look for a local campaign. Its been years since I last played. Granted I only played once and only for a couple months but it was a lot of fun.

Having made these character minis, have you also made any floor plans or monster minis?

Id love to see what other ones youve done.

Shabams, many posts while I was away. Thanks for all the feedback!

Faded_Sneakers, I did a dwarf a while back (for my character) Orin Skullcrusher and printed it out for a mini. I hope to do a painting of it soon, but for now, its just a line drawing.

As far as other characters, I made some generic dwarf bandits and some giant ants, but they were pretty simple. I'm not the DM, so it kinda spoils some of the surprise if I know about the enemies in advance. But it also saves a ton of money. For the ant, I just drew a top down ant, printed it out on a square, then folded it like a tent. For the different varieties (minion, queen, armor cutter, etc) the DM just colored them. No reason to put a lot of time into a monster that is just going to get killed quickly.

here is a quick sketch of the party's rogue:

    rogue.jpg

After playing a few times, there are a couple changes I'd like to make, but this is the basic pose i'll be going for. The character is a too generic, so I'd like to add more uniqueness to him. Plus the way the character has developed, he needs to be a bit more flashy. Kinda like Han Solo mixed with Zoro...but with throwing knives. He needs more buckles...way more buckles.

    There...buckles
