2K Games announced today that XCOM®, the re-imagining of one of gaming’s most storied and beloved franchises, is currently in development at 2K Marin, the studio behind the multi-million unit selling BioShock® 2. Currently in development exclusively for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and Windows PC, XCOM combines the strategic core of the groundbreaking franchise with a suspense-filled narrative and distills it into a tense and unique first-person shooter experience.

“With BioShock 2, the team at 2K Marin proved themselves as masters of first-person, suspenseful storytelling, and with XCOM they will re-imagine and expand the rich lore of this revered franchise,” said Christoph Hartmann, president of 2K. “Players will explore the world of XCOM from an immersive new perspective and experience firsthand the fear and tension of this gripping narrative ride.”

XCOM is the re-imagining of the classic tale of humanity’s struggle against an unknown enemy that puts players directly into the shoes of an FBI agent tasked with identifying and eliminating the growing threat. True to the roots of the franchise, players will be placed in charge of overcoming high-stake odds through risky strategic gambits coupled with heart-stopping combat experiences that pit human ingenuity – and frailty – against a foe beyond comprehension. By setting the game in a first-person perspective, players will be able to feel the tension and fear that comes with combating a faceless enemy that is violently probing and plotting its way into our world.

XCOM is not yet rated by the ESRB. For more information on XCOM please visit www.XCOM.com.

2K Games is a division of 2K, a publishing label of Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. (NASDAQ: TTWO).

Meh, first person shooter = not even XCOM. It might be a great game or something but I don't think it's even worth talking about it like it has anything to do with the original games.

In the context of "X-COM" as a franchise, the point of whether or not this game is good is irrelevant.

2K is just leveraging a name and some pretty flimsy lore to offload what will inevitably be a Bioshock clone.

The only possible way this could be good is if they basically made it Republic Commando meets X-Com with a VATS-style system for combat.

What they should do is get Volition and use the Geomod stuff from Red Faction Guerilla. It's just not XCom if you can't kill one sectoid by blowing up the entire house he's hiding in.

Still though, I'd prefer a tactical game, though with the huge number of UFO: After<Blank> games that came out, I don't know if anyone could do a good, real XCom game again.

The whole idea of an X-Com first person shooter is retarded - you can't have a strong main character carrying six guns mowing down aliens like you do in every fps ever made. X-Com is all about being on the edge of death for every second of every mission. It's about taking one step past cover and getting liquefied by an alien shooting you from half a map away, that you didn't even see. It's about the dude behind you suddenly being mind controlled and emptying a clip into the back of your skull before you even know what's happening. It's about getting killed before you even make it out of the transport.

(Maybe I'm not the best X-Com player around, but my dudes never had a terribly long life expectancy.)

I would totally buy a "Republic Commando meets X-Com with a VATS-style system for combat" though.

Is there even the slightest chance that this is a horrible horrible miscommunication and 2K picked up Flying Lab's Delta Green game that happened to emulate some of X-COM's gameplay?

EDIT:Because I remember 2K wanting to pick it up, but thinking that the DG brand wasn't well known enough to sell $Texas

Narritive? X-COM's got narritive, it's a god damn alien grenade flying into your troop transport on the first turn.

Shit, I gotta' feeling that this is gonna' suck and suck hard, and I'm the one who usually supports unconventional X-COM ideas.

I know! Let's just place it in an underwater environment.... we'll make it an X-COM Terror from the Deep FPS! Let's set it around 1960 this time, and reboot the franchise (that's the cool thing to do, right?) and our player can explore an underwater city (let's call it Rapture), and survive attacks by the mutated beings and mechanical drones that populate it.

    Oh and Aliens.

Bioshock 2 got some pretty good reviews and I guess it was actually pretty good, for a game with no real narrative reason to exist

So I guess I'm okay with this game existing too, even if a first person shooter is about as far away from XCOM as you could possibly get

Besides, there's freeware XCOM clones out there that are pretty darn good if that's what you're looking for

Sequence of events in my head as I read the headline then the post on joystiq:

    1. 2K, ok, pretty good.
    2. X-COM OMG!!!!! :^::^::shock:
    3. 1st Person shooter D:o_O

I'm sure it'll be a fun shooter but man I wish a new tactical game would just come out that could match the type of experience I had when X-Com first came out. Silent Storm series held my interests for a while, despite that chuggy engine. But once
    the mechs show up
I kinda lost interest. I'll stop rambling since this is probably rehashing the same stuff that gets talked about anytime the name X-Com comes up.

God, this is like hearing about my highschool sweetheart being found raped and left for dead on the side of the road. By Chrysalids.

Serriously who thought it was a good idea to take a classic IP and twist the genre and throw it into the stagnat bloated arena of the scifi fps. They may as well make chess into a flight sim and Master of Orion into a 3d fighter while they are at it.

I'm sure it's going to be linear as hell with no base managment. No wories about a big funding nation being invaded and turned against you. No enemies one shotting your mans turning them into more enemies. Never will a mission start with a nuke taking out your whole squad. No random terrible shit that makes you wonder if the redshirt stepping off the ramp is going to take plasma from 3 diffrent enemies simultaniously and have a grenade tossed on his corpse at the same time.

Why couldn't they make this more like Valkyria Chronicles with proceduraly generated missions and perminant death for squadies. With hard as nails AI.

I'm just waiting for the moral choice system to be announce that will be pure black and white with no middle ground with little overall effect on the game.

    Basically this.

If Square Enix announced tomorrow that Front Mission 6 is being worked on by Activision and it's going to be a first person shooter with "narrative", I think you'd see the same reactions (just by less people, since nobody seems to give a damn about FM anymore :?).

Everybody's just a bit worried that they're going to release a mediocre sci-fi shooter and punch it up with name recognition from a beloved brand, since that's sort of what happens a lot these days.
