2K Games announced today that XCOM®, the re-imagining of one of gaming’s most storied and beloved franchises, is currently in development at 2K Marin, the studio behind the multi-million unit selling BioShock® 2. Currently in development exclusively for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and Windows PC, XCOM combines the strategic core of the groundbreaking franchise with a suspense-filled narrative and distills it into a tense and unique first-person shooter experience.
“With BioShock 2, the team at 2K Marin proved themselves as masters of first-person, suspenseful storytelling, and with XCOM they will re-imagine and expand the rich lore of this revered franchise,” said Christoph Hartmann, president of 2K. “Players will explore the world of XCOM from an immersive new perspective and experience firsthand the fear and tension of this gripping narrative ride.”
XCOM is the re-imagining of the classic tale of humanity’s struggle against an unknown enemy that puts players directly into the shoes of an FBI agent tasked with identifying and eliminating the growing threat. True to the roots of the franchise, players will be placed in charge of overcoming high-stake odds through risky strategic gambits coupled with heart-stopping combat experiences that pit human ingenuity – and frailty – against a foe beyond comprehension. By setting the game in a first-person perspective, players will be able to feel the tension and fear that comes with combating a faceless enemy that is violently probing and plotting its way into our world.
XCOM is not yet rated by the ESRB. For more information on XCOM please visit

X-Com is dead.
2K is just leveraging a name and some pretty flimsy lore to offload what will inevitably be a Bioshock clone.

The only possible way this could be good is if they basically made it Republic Commando meets X-Com with a VATS-style system for combat.
- The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (2017, colorized)
Still though, I'd prefer a tactical game, though with the huge number of UFO: After<Blank> games that came out, I don't know if anyone could do a good, real XCom game again.
(Maybe I'm not the best X-Com player around, but my dudes never had a terribly long life expectancy.)
I would totally buy a "Republic Commando meets X-Com with a VATS-style system for combat" though.
EDIT:Because I remember 2K wanting to pick it up, but thinking that the DG brand wasn't well known enough to sell $Texas
The fact that we might get a "X-Com branded Bioshock 3" is a good thing.
Shit, I gotta' feeling that this is gonna' suck and suck hard, and I'm the one who usually supports unconventional X-COM ideas.
Someone was making a Delta Green game? I'm glad I didn't hear about it before it died, else I'd be disappointed now.
Oh and Aliens.

So I guess I'm okay with this game existing too, even if a first person shooter is about as far away from XCOM as you could possibly get
Besides, there's freeware XCOM clones out there that are pretty darn good if that's what you're looking for

How this translate to X-com we shall see.
There were rumors of both a FPS game (obv this) and a TBS game a few months ago
I don't know, the last time that someone tried to make a sequel to a widely-loved classic like this was Deus Ex... and that already had first person and shooting
Well, it's more the fact that it's an FPS.
1. 2K, ok, pretty good.
2. X-COM OMG!!!!! :^::^::shock:
3. 1st Person shooter D:o_O
I'm sure it'll be a fun shooter but man I wish a new tactical game would just come out that could match the type of experience I had when X-Com first came out. Silent Storm series held my interests for a while, despite that chuggy engine. But once
Man, now I sorta' know how those dudes felt when Fallout 3 was announced, except probably more correct about the outcome.
Except that that was technically also an RPG. I mean, c'mon at least there was already an X-COM FPS...right?....right?
Serriously who thought it was a good idea to take a classic IP and twist the genre and throw it into the stagnat bloated arena of the scifi fps. They may as well make chess into a flight sim and Master of Orion into a 3d fighter while they are at it.
I'm sure it's going to be linear as hell with no base managment. No wories about a big funding nation being invaded and turned against you. No enemies one shotting your mans turning them into more enemies. Never will a mission start with a nuke taking out your whole squad. No random terrible shit that makes you wonder if the redshirt stepping off the ramp is going to take plasma from 3 diffrent enemies simultaniously and have a grenade tossed on his corpse at the same time.
Why couldn't they make this more like Valkyria Chronicles with proceduraly generated missions and perminant death for squadies. With hard as nails AI.
I'm just waiting for the moral choice system to be announce that will be pure black and white with no middle ground with little overall effect on the game.

Basically this.
If Square Enix announced tomorrow that Front Mission 6 is being worked on by Activision and it's going to be a first person shooter with "narrative", I think you'd see the same reactions (just by less people, since nobody seems to give a damn about FM anymore :?).
Everybody's just a bit worried that they're going to release a mediocre sci-fi shooter and punch it up with name recognition from a beloved brand, since that's sort of what happens a lot these days.
Not so much mad at video games as the people trying to milk a name.
I'd buy those...
