Addiction

Here, as defined by Merriam-Webster
Pronunciation: \ə-ˈdik-shən, a-\
Function: noun

1 : the quality or state of being addicted <addiction to reading>
2 : compulsive need for and use of a habit-forming substance (as heroin, nicotine, or alcohol) characterized by tolerance and by well-defined physiological symptoms upon withdrawal; broadly : persistent compulsive use of a substance known by the user to be harmful

Addiction is a funny thing and can come in many varieties. For example one can be addicted to this:

Some people believe addiction is nothing more than an issue of mind over matter. Others believe there are physical dependencies that create true addiction. Who’s right? I have no idea!     Fast Food.

    I was talking about it with a friend of mine today and I got the sweats. My office mates are all eating Taco Bell and McDonald's today and I'm going crazy. Chugging water and counting the seconds until I can get to my reasonable and balanced lunch.

    I don't think it's as legitimate as any of the other addictions you've listed, but that's all I got.

    It costs me exactly $5711 in subscription costs per year with 36 accounts on the 6 month pay schedule. Not bad considering I’m looking at it like it’s a hobby and there are more expensive hobbies out there than World of Warcraft.

    Of course that leads to me learning only recently that "HP" does not refer to horsepower.

    is internet addiction really a thing

    i mean i spend a lot of time on the computer when i'm home because it's right there

    but i don't see how spending a good deal of time reading things pertaining to my interests is an addiction

    and it's not like when i go out i am itching to get back home because god forbid i let my rss feeds pile up

    Why is it that WoW players always justify the crazy amount of time/emotional investment they have with that game with "well, it's my hobby, and it could be way worse!"

    I used to do that exact same thing when I was a WoW junkie.

    how does this person earn money? somehow I can't imagine someone playing 36 WoW accounts to be able to function in society well enough to earn enough money to support this habit.

    also you can upkeep a very expensive photography hobby on $5700 a year.

    Since he has them all rigged to one or two keyboards it's not like he's putting in that much more time than a regular hardcore WoW player, he's just controlling a lot of dudes at once. I imagine he's either rich through his parents or has a job.
