Hey again. This is like my third H/A post recently, I'm sorry about that! You guys just seem to get me answers faster than anything else though, and I have been having shit luck with technology lately.
Anyway, I recently decided to break out the PSP again and buy some new games. I bought Half-Minute Hero, and apparently my PSP is not at the current version. Okay, the UMD has the update on it.
Except, whenever it tries to update, it says that the PSP cannot read the disc.
Strange. So I tried other UMDs, and they work, so it's not the PSP's problem (at least when it comes to reading discs).
So I figure I'll just try a manual installation. I create the folder on the PSP, download the most recent update from Sony's site, and the PSP can find the installer.
Except, whenever the update starts, it says that the memory stick cannot be read.
WTF.
Additonal info that might help:
I bought the PSP used back in december, and I have never had any problems with it.
The current version it is on is 3.71
EDIT: Tried with battery "fully charged", still doesn't work.

I don't know. I guess I could try restoring it to factory defaults.
EDIT: Wait, I think that option is just to return default settngs, not erase the thing back to start. Is there any way to reformat a PSP?
My PSP can't connect to my WiFi, it is not supported.
Also, some quick google-ing and visiting some shady psp hack sites suggest that if I had custom firmware, I'd be able to tell in my system information. So it appears I do NOT have custom firmware, but I'm no expert.
ERROR CODES:
Error from trying to install off the memory stick:
The Memory Stick could not be read.
If you cancel, you may not be able to start the PSP system.
Check that the memory stick is correctly inserted, and then press the X button.
(80010005)
if I retry, the error code comes back different. 80020321.
I was recently playing MHFU and my character got corrupted so I had to format the stick before I could play again. Sadly I couldn't back up / fix my data.
I will try this, but it also wouldn't update off the UMD disc either...
Update:
Didn't work.
Do you have another memory stick you could try? Do your other games read off your memory stick ok?
When trying to install firmware from the memory stick, I am trying to update to 6.20
When trying to install off Half-Minute Hero's UMD, I am trying to update to 5.55
The error code from the UMD issues is the same.
Also, my old games play fine. And it recognizes that the HMH UMD is in the drive. So I have no clue what it is going on.
My memory stick has never had an error before, and games still save/load from it fine.
I recently put some songs on the memory stick. Should I remove them just to make absolutely sure there is enough space (I'm pretty sure there is).
EDIT: Never mind on that, when I reformatted the memory stick I forgot to back those up, so they're not there anyway.
I'm pretty much out of ideas for ya, I hope someone else can chime in with something.
Further update:
Attempting an incremental update (tried going to 3.80 instead of such a higher version) does not work either.
Another update:
Called SONY support, have been told to try downloading MediaGO and updating through that. I'll post if that changes anything.
Apparently this doesn't work with PSP 1000s. Only thing left to try is the WiFI update.
Guess this ends in failure. Thanks for the help though.
omg i am having the exact same problem...EXACT. I just bought fifa 09 and i have to update to version 4.05 but i get the same shit you get. i read your post and tried media go....whenever i conncet my psp it tells me you have to update. i click on update and it takes me to the playstation site....no use. i was wondering did you figure anything out?
Sorry, what do you mean by "not supported"? Every PSP going back to the original 1.00 Japanese system (and the 1.50 US system) supported WiFi.
edit: Or did I misread you and you mean that your WiFi network won't support your PSP somehow?
I'm confused.
Regardless, though, your error is weird.
edit: Okay I just read where you said you confirmed your PSP doesn't have custom firmware installed. If that's really true, I think your PSP might potentially be broken in some part. Either that or the NAND got corrupted somehow which has happened before with custom firmware installers. The reason google is pulling up a lot of information about custom firmware is because this error seems to happen to people who have 3.71 M33-2 installed. I'm assuming that firmware had a corrupted installer and whomever set it up before you got your hands on it had installed that custom firmware.
(Note, I'm not saying you're being dishonest or anything. How did you confirm that you don't have custom firmware though? Are you absolutely, 100% positive you don't? The way to check would be to check the version number in System Information.)
i have the same problem man our psp is not broken it has been working fine for quite a while now. its a fat psp and the version is 3.71 m33 not m33-2
Also, coolkid, you definitely have custom firmware installed. Your best bet is to incrementally update to a higher version of your current custom firmware. This forum is not the appropriate place for your problem, though.
lulz, nope, I didn't know. Thanks.
Do not talk about PSP custom firmwares in this forum. Use frickin' Google, for goodness sake. Or Youtube... there are whole CHANNELS devoted to this. Don't look for your answer here.
I'm not sure custom firmwares actually fall under either category of "piracy" or "emulation" since they don't specifically relate to either. You can have a full, robust conversation about custom firmwares without ever discussing, alluding to, or guiding someone into emulation or piracy. In fact, there have been numerous threads in G&T about custom firmware and the like over the past few years. I don't recall there ever being a change in policy there, but maybe I missed something. For the record, though, that rule you just quoted was absolutely in place when those threads existed.
Could a mod possibly comment on this? I recall multiple threads on Nintendo DS homebrew both in G&T and, if I recall correctly, here. I don't remember seeing any on the PSP, but I think PSPs have been far less popular on PA than the DS and even the DS threads weren't that popular, if memory serves.
edit: Also, it seems like he's asking for help on how to install a legitimate/official firmware. He's specifically not looking to install a new custom firmware. I can't see that being against the rules, but I'll wait to see if a mod comments.
I've been burned already for even mentioning custom firmware. You can check my infraction log. If he wants help, he can ask someone (or someplace) else.
I just looked at your infraction and I'm pretty sure you earned that red card for explicitly promoting emulation, which IS against the rule. Custom firmware isn't.
But I've PMed Thanatos to ask him to weigh in here so let's just leave it at that if and until he does.
Anyway, I did give the guy the best course of action in his case. See my first post (in which I also pointed out the thread necromancy). But if we explored those options further, it toes a fine line. Good luck in helping this guy.
What I'm trying to explain to you is that you aren't a mod and it's not appropriate for you to interpret the rules for other posters. Your infraction (which is also inappropriate for the two of us to discuss) very clearly and explicitly breaks the rule as it is worded. Nothing in the rule says you can't talk about custom firmware, and as I pointed out there have been numerous threads in the past devotedly solely to that topic and people communicating in the topic (who stuck to the concept of homebrew) were never infracted for it.
I mean, either something is against the rules or it isn't. If it's against the rules, then talking about it is against the rules. If it isn't, then there is no good reason why anyone should restrict themselves from talking about said topic.
So yes, I comprehend the notion of fear. It doesn't make your fear rational. And there's no reason for you to keep going on about it when I already said I asked a mod to weigh in. You're not going to earn an infraction by asking for clarification about a rule. However, we both might earn an infraction for going on and on and on and on and on about this, which is completely off topic and not for us to decide. Just chill out and see what a mod says, if they decide to weigh in at all.
