[SOLVED] Need a gaming-capable laptop, fast

Hi H/A! My boss walked in to my office today and let me know that starting Sunday, I will be spending the next month and a half in Baton Rouge. I'll be staying in a hotel, working days and possibly weekends, and will likely be bored out of my mind at night.

I'm planning on doing some sightseeing, but I know I'll want to keep up with my Internet/WoW addiction some nights and so I'd like to get a laptop to help with this. I'd actually been planning to get a laptop for a while, but had no real reason to need one - well, now I've got it!

Since I need it so quickly, it needs to be something that can either be delivered by Saturday, or that I can pick up in store. (such as Best Buy) I realize this means I'm not going to be able to take advantage of certain deals because it's such short notice. There MAY be an option to deliver it to the hotel but I'd prefer not to do that if I can help it.

Details I'd like:
-Be able to run WoW and run it well, with good enough specs that it'll be good for new games for at least a year or two
-Have a webcam
-Have a decent sized screen; 15" is too small for me
-Yeah... uh.... that's about it
-Price point: No more than $1500 but I'm willing to go a little higher for something very good; but if I can get something that fits my needs for less than $1500 I'll be quite happy

I've never bought a laptop and I've certainly never bought something major on such short notice so please help me out, H/A!

edit: Oh I will definitely be asking for sightseeing advice in Baton Rouge and nearby cities in another thread ^_^

I'd say MacBook Pro but I'm not sure what the graphics cards are like in those these days. Should be enough to run wowz.

Best Buy has an Asus gaming laptop that my friend bought for like 1200 with a bag. He loves it. It plays pretty much anything he can put on it.

I'm pretty sure its This but they have This for a little more.

Should very much get the WoW job done. He uses his currently for STO and Bad Company 2, which are farily new and run like a dream.

I'd prefer not to get a Mac. Just personal preference there.

Mosiac I will check those out, thanks!

edit: Definitely like the 2nd one, the extra battery life is a plus and it looks like the specs are a little better

The MBPs can run WoW just fine, but no way are they fitting under that price point.

Actually I just saw that alienware has a very respectable 11" machine for $799 (It'll run the shit out of WoW). No optical drive though. They also have a 15 inch for $1199.
    Right here.

The reviews I've seen for it have been fairly affectionate.

    Haha nevermind!

Apparently the price tag they show you is for the very barebones models, and if you want to upgrade them to reasonable specifications (the ones they advertise the machines with), you have to shell out thousands of additional dollars.

Yeah the 2nd one is way better, and since you wanna stay under 1500 it does that well. It'll be heavy though, but if you're just using it at the hotel this isn't really an issue.

I haven't used his laptop but he has never had a problem with it to date so it seems to be a pretty solid machine.

Actually I take that back, theres a piece of asus software on there (you don't have to use) that will use your webcam photo as your password to login. If you take the photo bright, and then try to use it in the dark, it gets pissy, but you can always just type in your password.

Edit: you probably know this but you'll more than likely want to look into some sort of mouse too, since playing WoW with a touch pad kinda sucks like bad.

I love my Gateway. I bought one about a year ago after making a similar thread in H/A and doing some searching.

however, it is highly unportable as far as laptops go. heavy and clumsy and the power adapter does not attach well. but those are minor if you're gonna only use it in a hotel room. haven't had any problems with it running any games though.

My sister has that 1st Asus laptop that Mosaic posted. Awesome computer. The only nit-picky complaint would be battery life, but I think that'd be a side effect of any gaming laptop. I'd imagine the higher spec'd one would be even nicer.

I'm really leaning toward the 2nd Asus - particularly because I could quite literally go pick it up in 10 minutes - but I'm also drooling over Alienware. Is it worth paying more for the Alienware? I'm wanting to say no, simply because this laptop will not be my primary computer except for the next month and a half.

If I did go for Alienware, I'd either have to go with the 15" screen to stay within my price point but I'd really prefer the 17". However that will cause me to go outside my price point very very quickly... if it's a far superior computer I'm willing to do it, but if it's not, no way. Thoughts?

tl;dr: How does Alienware stack up against Asus, is it worth paying a few hundred $ more?

I would say it's not worth it going up to alienware because from what I've heard from people that have bought them is you're just paying for the name. I've never heard anyone say it's been a bad computer, just pricey.

All I have to say is that ASUS computers are rock solid. I worked at best buy for a couple months over christmas, and if I was going to buy a gaming computer there, ASUS are the best they carry.

I have this exact same laptop.

    The processor is absolute crap.

I get weird graphical chugging all the time, and when you try to run games on settings that befit that kind of graphic card, the computer just poops on you and freezes.

Dunadan, if you disagree, or having experienced similar, shoot me a line in PM to teach me how i'm doin it wrong.

edit: granted i've had it as my main pc for 2+ years. when i settle for average settings, everything runs like a dream. Since it's the only gamin laptop I've ever owned, it actually kicks ass all things considered.

    Super edit:

That laptop that you're linking to has higher/better specs than mine from like 3 years ago.

Heck i might buy that as my lcd just pooped itself (i broke it).
