I'm torn. I'm not sure what my first GW2 toon will be.
My wife definitely wants a Sylvari.
We'll probably make humans to play together.
I defintely want a Charr. Uh, and a Norn!
Asuran will be the last I make, I'm sure about that!
Sylvari = Not elves, more human but with a childlike innocence and a desire to do good. No pointy ears.
Actually the Sylvari do have pointy ears.
Also this conversation made me sketch my idea of what a Sylvari should look like:
(I know, this is painful to look at after bathing in the gloriousness that is ANet's concept art, but bear with me.) This is basically what I was expecting. It's not that different from the official design, but by adding some centaur features (horns, sheep-like face, holes for ears, and a mane) I think it removes the "elvish" feel. Bonus points for lignin hooves and a tail tipped with flowers.

While you eat, let's have a conversation about the nature of consent.
The only race I'm pretty certain I won't roll is a charr (I think the female charr look quite awesome, but I just can't get into playing an animal-like race. That is, unless there is a /lickpaw emote. Then I will be all over it); I want to roll at least one of each of the others, though I'm mainly jonesing for a Norn. In fact, I'm not sure I'd roll a human at all (Norn are so much cooler!) except that I want to experience a starting story in Divinity's Reach for the emotional connection.

I'm gonna play Charr. I like the whole "rawr, fire and steel" thematic they seem to got going.
I'm having trouble deciding to play a Norn or Sylvari Elementalist. I always like the druid and jack-of-all-trades characters. In one case it looks like you can play a feral shapeshifting elementalist or the tied to the earth/trees elementalist. I like the idea of both.
I like how the race/class combo makes up the more traditional classes you find in, maybe, D&D. Elementalist sounds like it can be a druid or a mage or a shaman. I'd bet you build a paladin using the warrior as the base. It'll be fun to see what people come up with.
I like jack-of-all-trade characters too, but partly because I like to make a single character and do everything with her, rather than a whole bunch of specialised alts.
ANet are making it very hard for me to do this in GW2.

"Karma is basically a non-tradable resource that is used for a variety of things in the game. For example, certain merchants only accept karma in exchange for their goods and services. Because of this, players can get some pretty cool rewards by doing events, but it doesn’t matter which exact event they’ve done."
"... there are no traditional quests in Guild Wars 2. We have three main types of content in the game. First, we have events which we’ve started talking about in some detail. Next we have the personal storyline, which is probably closest to being what players usually think of as a “quest” and yet it’s very different at the same time. We’ll be talking about the personal storyline very soon. Then we have dungeons, which are organized group content, but again with ArenaNet’s own particular twist. We’ll talk about dungeons a little further down the road."
For some reason, after having completely forgotten that a sequel to GW was ever announced, I woke up today with an "oh yea, GW2" moment. Lo and behold, look at this! Trailers, early videos, and a group of PA folks already chatting it up. I am pleased.
I played a lot in the beta for the original game, and I played the everloving crap out of it when it came out. I moved on before the expansions started coming out, though, so while I'm excited about the prospect of a new one coming out, I'm a bit worried about how much I've missed since then. Do any of the links in the OP have a decent overview of the plots from the expansions?
You don't really need to know much from the other campaigns to appreciate GW2, since they're set in other continents, whereas GW2 will be set in the original continent. I recommend playing Eye of the North, though, as it was specifically designed to bridge the gap between GW1 and GW2 and is awesome to boot.

Actually, the last paragraph of that interview was the most cryptic for me. What does this mean: "...earning achievements, discovering and earning traits, or completing collections. There is no end to the variety and amount of content available to players."
That sounds like a different possible way to gain experience, which is cool.
Yeah, "collections" is not something they have mentioned yet. Traits are special things, like the earth boots for elementalist which give knockdown immunity, but it seems we have to "discover" or earn them? Interesting..

My first GW2 character will definitely be a Sylvari ranger - or whatever class is closest to a ranger. What better race for someone who roams the wilds than someone who is already a plant?
I don't know if I want a Charr warrior or a Norn warrior. Maybe there will be 2 melee classes, and I can find a happy medium for each of those races. I'll never be rolling an Asuran though, even if they make the best elementalists, I won't even make my elementalist an Asuran. They're so fugly.
Also Caedere your av/sig combo hints at enough to cause unease but still be work safe. Well done!
Asura have magical golems which act as sentries and such even in GW1. They have mentioned that Asura racial skills will involve golems, one example of an elite being the summoning of a golem which the Asura character can climb into and "drive" around.
Kill Ten Rats got even more of a response on Events vs. Quests from Eric Flannum here.
This game is making me fangirl so. hard.
That sounds awesome. I love how the personal story "mission" interacts with a dynamic event in the same area.
Personally, I am kind of looking forward to just making a guy, teaming up with a friend or two, and then roaming the countryside and finding different events to be all heroic in. 8-)

And then it turns out that you need to grind the "Bandits Stole My Apples" event couple of dozen of times to earn enough karma to trigger more advanced events.

It sounds really awesome, but I have seen too many promises of open-ended innovation go unfulfilled to allow my hopes up too much. Still, I have faith in ArenaNet's ability to think outside the MMO box.

Setting up these kinds of choices and opportunities for adventure are what the event system is all about, and it has proven to be highly satisfying to players with a strong “explorer” play style. These players get to go out into the world, draw conclusions by looking at the evidence around them, and then discover things to do. The event system is so much more than simply running around until you stumble across something to do (although that is also possible and sometimes very fun).
...
It is my belief that far from being endangered, the “completionist explorer” will thrive in Guild Wars 2.

Why the hell did Caedere decide to screw with my favourite WoW mount? Is nothing sacred?
Bitches don't forget I was reppin' Charr hard on like the first page of the first thread, after Corehealer made the thread in the first place and was reppin' for the Charr in the OP and the title.
don't you fucking forget, Core is the best :P.
Also better than a Sylvari ranger is one who dominates nature, hippie style.

The first thing I'm gonna do when I make my Charr is take her to the Hall of Monuments, grab the Legendary Defender of Ascalon title, and go /taunt some monkeys in the Ascalonian district of Divinity's Reach.

aww fuck yes. I've been waiting for an MMO that not only rewards, but encourages actual exploration. Rather than going up to the nearest wiki/forum and finding the optimal path with the best rewards ASAP.
We have anticipated that higher level players ruining events for lower level players could be a huge problem. Instead of scaling the events themselves (which causes a host of problems) we are using a sidekick system (about which we will talk at some later point) to scale the high level player down.
What this means is that they’ll probably still be able to contribute a lot more than a “normal” player but won’t be able to one shot everything in sight with ease. For example a level 20 player trying to take part in a level 5 event will scale down to about level 8. They’d still get to feel very powerful but wouldn’t break the event. This has the added bonus of allowing a player to go experience whatever content they want to regardless of whether or not they’ve “out leveled” it.
I know I always felt a little awkward going back to Ascalon to help people through since having a level 20 person there makes things ridiculously easy. Killing all the Charr instead of running in the Great Northern Wall mission anyone?
