I just got an Android phone, and I would love some app recommendations.

Free is an obvious plus. Video games are meh.

Thanks!

I hate you and you hate me.

I'm not a big app user, but here's what I've got.

    *fIRC Chat - IRC client
    *Connectbot - SSH client
*AKNotepad - just a simple notepad thing for making quick notes
*Calorie Counter - little app for keeping track of calories. Lets you scan the bar code on products and it pulls up the info. This usually works, occasionally they don't have it, though.
*ixMAT Scanner - a barcode scanner app. In theory it's really cool because people can put encoded links as an image on a website and you can scan it with the app and it opens the link on your phone to the website, android market page for an app, etc. In reality I've only seen anyone take advantage of this like twice and if it were to ever get popular it would become a security risk since you have no way of knowing what it's actually linking to until it's too late.

If you listen to podcasts, Doggcatcher is a must. It's 7 bucks, so it's kinda pricey, but works perfectly.

If you have not gotten it already, the Pandora Radio app is great, and free.

There is also a bar code scanner app that I can not remember the exact name of, but it is also free and pretty useful when trying to find the cheapest priced items n an area.

I sold my G1 around the time of PAX, so these might be out of date.

Google Sky Map - This is great on night-time dates. So great.
Ringdroid - Aces for editing ringtones.
Shazam - Figure out what that song is.
ChompSMS - Much better than the default SMS client.
SMS Popup - Creates a nice little notifier when you get a text, complete with pic from address book.
Movie Finder - What it sounds like.
Gmote - Amazing app for turning your phone into a controller/keyboard/mouse for your PC.

Handscent is a nice Iphone style sms app

I don't know if I really like it more than the default one on the droid but it is very nice and pretty and shuts up people with iphones

Connectbot, Listen, Chompsms and Mixzing Lite are the ones I use pretty much every day.

Ringdroid is an amazing app for making personal notification sounds etc.
    SMSpopup should be default.
Abduction is a great game, even just the demo is worth playing.
If you like twitter you'll want Twidroid (there's a free version).
I've tried out Dolphin Browser and it's good if you're opposed to the default, or really like having gestures.
