Their loss, I think something like this would sell really well on PSN.

It's written in XNA. I imagine porting it over would be more trouble than it's worth.

Yeah, but I'm thinking back to his work with GameSpot. Maybe the guy has done a 180 since he left, but at GameSpot he was one of the worst reviewers. That whole Kane and Lynch thing? Yeah. Eidos over reacted, but their anger was somewhat warranted because Gerstman's review was pretty fucking terrible.

The guy is just like Casamassina in how awful of a reviewer he is. PA even has a couple of comics pretty much calling Gerstman a fat idiot.

Because, at the time, he was. But we can all be redeemed.

It wouldn't be a port, it would be a total re-write, to a different language and a different framework. The only "ports" they can do is PC, Zune and soon Windows Mobile 7. The only one that makes any commercial sense is PC, but slash000 commented about piracy concerns (and I don't blame him).

Technically that would still be a port, if it uses the same art and sound assets. Changing languages doesn't mean it's no longer a port.

In the video game sense, I'll give you that you could call it a port. Iin the programming sense, no, that's not a port. It's a total re-write, as almost none of the technology assets can be directly re-used. A software port is when I take a chunk of Win32 code and 'port' it to say, Linux. The core technology code should mostly stay the same, but my hooks in to the system will greatly change.

I'm not. I completely understand why they kept it 360 only, and I support their decision. I'm just trying to point out to people, it's not a simple port. Magnified by a two person team, it's way more work than they probably want to do, when they could instead go on and work on another game.

Breath of Death VII probably would sell well on the PSN, but it doesn't really seem like a good idea to port it at the moment. First, we'd have to spend thousands of dollars buying development kits. Then, we'd have to learn how to use those tools. Then, we'd have to actually convert the Breath of Death VII code. Then, we'd probably have to make some modifications to make sure it follows all of Sony's Best Practics and Standards (XNA developers complain about how strict the peer review process is, but it's drastically more lax than the requirements you need to pass to get official approval by Microsoft, Nintendo, or Sony).

All of this would take months. Then, once the game is done, we'd have to try to drum up support and hype for the game again since it would be some time after the XBLIG version was out. Finally, I don't think the PSN allows for $1 games so we'd have to raise the price. So after going through all that work, we'd have people who are mad at us for charging them more than we charged the XBox 360 owners.

Or, instead, we just forget all that and focus on the XBox 360. We develop a new game in less time than it would take to get Breath of Death VII on the PSN and release it on the XBox 360 sometime this summer. Not only would this take less time, but we would be releasing it on a system where we already have a fanbase built up so getting good press will be easier. Plus, the two games could support each other with the second game convincing people to buy the first game and vice versa which is something that wouldn't happen with porting the game to the PSN (pretty much no one is going to buy a PSN version and then decide to get the same game on XBLIG). Finally, it's just plain more enjoyable for us to do.

I get that doing multiplatform releases make a lot of sense for big companies, but when your company consists of two people (Slash & me) and your programmer (me) only has experience coding in one language, ports don't seem like a very good idea.

Nintendo confirms the rumors that Metroid and S&P are both delayed a small bit.

I'm actually ok with this. Monster Hunter Tri and Super Mario Galaxy 2 will be keeping me busy for a bit and I wouldn't have the money for Metroid yet...so yea, I'm actually happy to hear about a delay. Hurrah! :D

We would both like to do an Action/RPG at some point and since 3D Dot Game Heroes has got a lock on Zelda, a Crystalis-style game would be the obvious choice for us (one of my all time favorite NES games). However, we're going to stick with turn-based RPGs for the immediate future since we still have a lot we'd like to do in that arena.

Since we're on the subject of what we'd like to see you guys do in the future, I know I'd love to see more turn based RPGs in retro style. I'd also like to see a more traditional, "serious" version of one. I mean not really "serious," but as much as the old games actually were. I could also see this being a good avenue for a sort of episodic series where you give short 4-6 hour RPGs that continue a larger story arc. I doubt you'd be able to import saves or anything like that, but I still think it'd work pretty well. I think it'd be along the lines of what Square-Enix did with that FF4 sequel. That'd rock for me. And I think it'd work very well with BoDVII getting you guys some attention. You put that parody RPG to specifically target people like me who love those old games, and then after they've had that taste you put out something that actually is more close to that stuff and keep 'em hooked with an ongoing story.

Also, if you guys are ever looking to expand a bit or need a writer/marketing/graphic designer (my degree is in GD with a minor in marketing, and I've wrote a few novels before (one published, another not), I'd love to jump on something like this.

    Everything is perfectly fine!

    http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/28222/ExInfinity_Ward_Staffers_Join_Respawn.php
Numerous key staffers who left Infinity Ward in the wake of Jason West and Vince Zampella's firings are turning up at Respawn Entertainment, the new studio the pair founded with the publishing support of Electronic Arts.

The LinkedIn profile of former lead designer Todd Alderman now shows him taking a similar role at Respawn. Alderman left Infinity Ward earlier this month, one of the earliest reported departures in what became a string of senior-level employee exits.

As discovered by consumer site G4, Alderman is joined at Respawn by other recently-reported ex-Infinity Ward staffers. Lead animator Mark Grisby, lead environmental artist Chris Cherubin, lead animator John Paul Messerly, software engineer Rayme Vinson, programmer Jon Shiring and lead designer Mackey McCandlish all revealed via social media that they've taken on comparable roles at Respawn.

    Also, some other news.
    http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/28227/Mad_Catz_Now_Principal_Peripherals_Partner_For_Rock_Band.php
Accessories maker Mad Catz said Friday that it signed an agreement with music game developer Harmonix to be the principal peripherals partner for the Rock Band franchise worldwide.

The multi-year licensing agreement means that Harmonix grants Mad Catz the international rights to produce and distribute Rock Band controllers for future versions of Rock Band wherever the game is sold.

The next version of Rock Band is Rock Band 3, due holiday 2010 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Wii.

"Serving as the principal Rock Band video game peripherals partner on a multi-territory basis leverages the powerful product development and global marketing and distribution capabilities Mad Catz has built,” said Mad Catz CEO Darren Richardson in a statement.

Mad Catz has worked with Harmonix and publisher MTV Games over the past two years on Rock Band and Rock Band 2 peripherals. Richardson said that the deal means his company will "take on an even more integral role with the Rock Band franchise."

Mad Catz designs and markets a wide array of video game accessories, including various kinds of game controllers, cables, mice, keyboards and other peripherals.

    http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/28223/Blizzard_To_Appeal_StarCraft_II_Korea_Rating.php
Blizzard will do whatever it can to eliminate the 18-plus classification upcoming StarCraft II has received from Korea's ratings board, submitting an edited build to and appealing the decision.

The Korea board found it unsuitable for consumers under the age of 18 due to what it called the game's "level of violence, foul language and depiction of drug use". North America's ESRB gave the PC and Mac title a Teen rating for its "blood and gore, language, suggestive themes, use of alcohol and tobacco, and violence." Blizzard hopes to attain a 12-and-up rating for the game in the region.

Blizzard's Bob Colayco told consumer site Shacknews that it has already given the board a new build intended to "address the Game Ratings Board'€™s concerns." According to the report, a factor in the rating might be a conflict between Blizzard and KeSPA, the organization that oversees StarCraft: Brood War eSports in South Korea.

Competitive play of StarCraft is an enormously popular sport in the region, and KeSPA and Blizzard have had tension in the past -- Blizzard seeks more ownership of and involvement in the competition around its game, while KeSPA wants to retain sole control over the sport. The release of StarCraft II may be viewed as a threat to KeSPA's dominance over StarCraft gaming.

Another factor that may pose a challenge to the game is rising concern over teens' online play in South Korea. Just over a week ago, South Korea's Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism announced new policies designed to limit the amount of time younger gamers spend with MMOs.

The new measures include a nighttime shutdown" that restricts underaged users from playing MMOs after midnight, and a slowdown system that reduces connection speeds after a period of time.

Kidding aside, you'd have better luck being offered a dev slot with a publisher (or dev) that could, as part of the deal, allow you to port over the game. Though I'd imagine such a contract would be difficult to negotiate with regards to the IP rights.

"The launch date for Metroid: Other M has shifted to Aug. 31. As you may know, this game is the product of a unique partnership between longtime Metroid producer Yoshio Sakamoto, Team Ninja and many other individuals and groups, all of whom have set very high standards for this latest installment in the series. Although it's taking slightly longer than expected to complete the project, we're confident that fans will find it to be well worth the wait.

We're striving to provide the best possible pacing for our summer game launches. A June 27 launch allows gamers to enjoy Sin & Punishment: Star Successor without having to rush through Super Mario Galaxy 2 (May 23)." - Nintendo statement

    Four, gah. You're right.

And it's entirely possible the delay was to brush up the voicework... or it could be that Ninty/Team Ninja needed some more time to finish it. Or it could just be that Nintendo figured the game would be better positioned at that date. Wouldn't be the first time they've sat on a finished game.

Not sure, but either way, I'm ok with the delay. I'm only made of so much money...Nintendo can't take it all at once. :(

“I am not sure that a game set in the late 19th century has tremendous mass appeal. I would have said the same for Assassin’s Creed, Prince of Persia, God of War, Dante’s Inferno and any other “period” pieces, yet most of these sold quite well.

Good lord, he's gotten into self-parody.

I'd say it's just that he doesn't really pay attention to anything that happens outside of his universe. The impression I got when GUN was released was that it wasn't ambitious enough. I'd certainly agree with that. And Red Dead Revolver was also well recieved.

If anything Rockstar knows how to create that kind of 'open world' game and there is plenty of room to 'exploit' other eras. If it was done even halfway decently, I'd probably buy a FPS game set during the American Revolution. Even if it meant not being about to machine gun enemies to death... How can we expect games to evolve and innovate if all they do is rehash the same tired setups?

    God, what a nozzle.
