    The problem is Teracopy seems like it should be able to handle this reasonably well, so I don't quite understand what's going on - its intelligently reading a whole bunch at a time, but it still tanks to 603kb/s.

    I wonder if this is a problem with GlusterFS on my server.

    God, moving 21000 small files takes a ridiculous amount of time. Were this a single ISO image or something, it would take maybe 8 minutes at 100mbps. But because it's a ton of tiny files, it's going slow as hell.

    One of the first things I had to kill was a big peaceful fluffy thing.

    I've found that the greatest form of compression outside of WPEG is zipping a file and then zipping that zipped file, repeating until you break it down to one byte.
