Metrodvanias for PC?
L Ron HowardThe duckMinnesotaRegistered Userregular
So I've searched around, but haven't found anything here on the forums. And my Google-fu seems to be failing me. I know there are a few out there, but I do believe I've played them all.
There's Knytt and Knytt 2, Cave Story and Iji. And that's about all that I can think of. There has to be more than those, right?
Are there any other Metroidvanias out there? Are there others that anyone can recommend?
An Untitled Story is pretty good, but it can get ruthlessly difficult with some of its platforming. The last area probably took me like 30 minutes to get through 5 screens.

Aquaria is a nice indie title available on steam, although instead of a platformer, you swim around in different areas. It shares a lot in common with the metroidvanias, though. Especially the sense of exploration.
I really enjoyed REDDER, it shares a lot of style with metroid, it's flash so you can play right away.
Nifflas, who made Knytt, has some other games which might interest you, his older Within a Deep Forest and his newest, Saira (not free, but has a demo). Saira is a bit short but it's quite good.
One I see often recommended is Lyle in Cube Sector, which I didn't finish.
Batman: Arkham Asylum's rather Metroid Prime-like, and the PC version is actually quite a well-done port.
I haven't played it, but I've never seen anyone describe it in such a way. Nor does it look like it. Can you elaborate on the specifics? So that I know you're not crazy? <_<

I played the demo of Aquaria, but kind of lost interest. I don't know if I ever finished it, but it didn't seem very Metroidvania to me. I'll go back and give it a shot.
I also didn't know TIG had a whole list of Metroidvania games. Last I saw everything was called an "Adventure," but that's such a vague term.

Metroidvania:
Typical gameplay involves exploring the game’s world and discovering paths that can not be accessed with the players' current abilities. Finding an item (either a key or a power-up) later on grants the ability to traverse the obstacle, allowing the player to backtrack and explore the new area at their leisure. Some power-ups are needed to obtain others, lending a sense of structure, sequence, and linearity to the game. This structure is often vital in creating a coherent plot by ensuring that events that progress the storyline are triggered in the proper order

I just played through it a few weeks ago and it's very Metroid-y. I loved it.

Well, Arkham Asylum has a brawler/beat-em-up engine grafted on top of the Metroidvania template, but that only makes it more awesome. In fact, the AA developers directly cited Zelda and Metroid as influences in their game design.

I wouldn't really call Iji a metroidvania. The upgrades that you can get are mostly arbitrary, and while you can roam about a bit freely within individual levels, once you clear a level you can't go back.

Both of these statements are untrue. After you finish the game, you open up a Level Select mode. Also, the skills you pick can drastically alter both the plot and the paths you can take in each level. Still, it's not a Metroidvania per se, but a good game nonetheless.

Well, yes. But it isn't so much a 'get this so you can get that later' thing. All skills do is open up more paths to the same goal.

The demo (and really the first dungeon or so) doesn't do justice to the rest of the game. It paints it more as a shooter game, but once you get past the first dungeon and are allowed to kinda branch out on your own, it gets a lot more fun.

Thanks guys!

That's Arkham Asylum to a T.

You're kidding, right? It might as well have been titled Metroid Underwater, or Wetroid.

It's translated now too.
I was coming here just to post that. It's a surprisingly awesome game. Hard as nails at times, but awesome.
But really, it's more like a hybrid of a Metroidvania, Flashback, and an RPG. Stat allocation!
