[ModNation Racers] Wait? People are still playing this? Ummm...Vita version pending? Yay?
Dudes. I got my game guide today. They came in to my store with the Red Dead shipment so I picked my ModNation guide up with my Red Dead purchase. So pumped.

Well, I haven't looked at it a whole lot yet. I went straight to bed when I got home last night. I was at my Gamestop till 2am cause I worked the midnight for Red Dead.
Right off the bat though, I do see some cool stuff in here. They've got character bios for a few characters. Tag (the guy on the box art) plus 4 other characters have a big bio.
There's also a section that talks about the weapons and what they do in each of their power-up stages.
Here's some spoiler-y stuff, although really, how much spoilers could there be in a racing game. Regardless, I will spoiler tag for any purists.
Game appears to be broken into 5 circuits with several races each, sort of like how Mario Kart is broken up into the different cups. In order:
The Home Tour
The Mayhem Tour
The Range Tour
The Grim Tour
The Grand Tour
There also appears to be a fairly extensive chart in the back that shows the breakdown of item unlocks from a place called the Token Store. Looks like you earn trips to the Token Store as you play the game. You also get unlocks for beating courses and finding hidden stuff on the tracks.
We must discuss weapons and their powers. They were one of the things I thought was very underpowered in the initial beta and I'm curious to see what's been tweaked/added/removed since then, and their various effects.
I will definitely be getting this at some point but it probably wont be release day unless I start making multiple trips to the tadpole bank since I just bought RDR and have UFC 2010 paid off which I could cancel but my local friends will probably come over to my house and armbar me since we have had plans for a month now to all get UFC 2010 on release day and start up an Online Fight camp. But plan B is now in play and I have reopened my Gamefly account and put this to the top of my list so hopefully I will be gettingthis shipped to me on release day.
Well, with the demo coming out today, we will have the ability to try the weapons first hand, but here is what the book says:
Lightning
Rank 1 - Bolt - Straight shot lightning attack.
Rank 2 - Chain Bolt - Seeking shot. Hits one target and forks to hit other nearby racers.
Rank 3 - Bolt Storm - Shoots an electrical storm into the sky that will strike anyone under it.
Missiles
Rank 1 - Straight Shot - Single shot. Does not lock on.
Rank 2 - Swarm - Three heat seeking missiles.
Rank 3 - Hydra - Torrent of missiles racing down the track. [Exact mechanics are not very specific in the book]
Sonic Attacks
Rank 1 - Sonic Bomb - Point Blank AoE attack that stops opponent's karts in their tracks. Small radius.
Rank 2 - Sonic Cannon - Shoots 3 shockwaves ahead of your kart. Nearby racers are shocked and stunned.
Rank 3 - Sonic Rift - Sends a huge wave rippling down the track, stunning everything in its path.
Speed Boosts
Rank 1 - Jumpstart - Basic boost skill. Extra speed for a short duration.
Rank 2 - Supercharger - Extra speed for a longer duration.
Rank 3 - Warp - Creates a warp portal to a location farther up the track. Any racer is able to take the portal while it is open, not just the person who creates it.
So incredibly stoked about this - I'll be downloading it the second I get home!
I love the idea that we can carry stuff over from the demo to the retail game - it's like getting an early week-long jump on creation for those of us who already have this game pre-ordered!
My only complaint so far is that I don't like losing my crap when I get shot. Sucks to have a rank 3 item built up, get shot, and have nothing. Its like getting double screwed. First you lose the time and position from getting shot. Then you lose your items on top if it, which hurts your chances of reclaiming the position you just lost.
I suppose that's intended to negate the effect if you're hit without a shield, you can't instantly own any drivers that cruise past you. You lost your item if you were hit by a shell or something similar in Mario Kart DD

Okay. I raise the water level of the track to make a series of islands that I'm going to connect with a road. Only I go to lay pavement and the water disappears. Eh?
Is there anyway to get back to the weather effects menu after you put down track?
See, I couldn't figure out how to widen/thin the track after laying it down. I figured because it was a demo, the editing tools were limited.
Mostlyjoe13: When I did it in Beta, I remember making the track first, and then raising the water level.
It took me a while to find them also. The ability to manipulate the track is sort of buried. First you gotta lay the track. Then go back in to the "edit track" option and you will get a whole new selection wheel of options.
@Mostlyjoe - I haven't found the water level tool after that initial chance they give you to use it. I don't know if you can adjust it later.

I really like the pit boss yelling at me to race faster. I wish he'd be a little more excited when I win though. Instead he just tells me he passed out. been hittin' the motor oil kinda' hard, eh?
I like the option to auto-fill, but I wish there was a way to filter it. Like allow the user to select which set pieces are used in the randomization process.
For example, with the theme that we're given, it would be nice to auto-fill without all the houses and construction stuff. Like have it auto-fill with only forest stuff. If there was a way to tell it which pieces were ok to use, that would be awesome.
Is it possible to shoot stuff backwards? I hate being out front in first and feeling completely helpless with a fully powered up item. I've tried pulling down on the stick when I press square and that doesn't seem to work.
Just won a race set at the fastest speed on the hard difficulty with 12 racers. Talk about insane. Sheesh.
Tons of fun though. I love this game.
And I seriously can't believe how dead this thread is. Was the beta really that bad that nobody is even interested anymore? Because this demo is phenomenal. Any early-build problems that might have existed in the beta seem to have been cleaned up, because I am loving every minute of this game.
I downloaded the demo, but I haven't installed the game yet. Also just got Red Dead Redemption in the mail but haven't taken it out of the package yet. Just not enough time.
I’ll tell you what happens in Demon’s Souls when you die. You come back as a ghost with your health capped at half. And when you keep on dying, the alignment of the world turns black and the enemies get harder. That’s right, when you fail in this game, it gets harder. Why? Because fuck you is why.
I think I'm spoiled on Sega All Stars Racing, since I'm still finding the handling to be not as good. That said, I usually adapt quickly to arcade-style racing games, so I'm sure that it won't be a problem after a week. The weapons, however... I still don't like the whole "get blown up, lose the tier 3 weapon you were about to fire at the leader" mechanic. Looks like they've made the shield easier to use, though.

I think when the game is finally released, the thread should see a lot more action. But keep in mind a lot of people are divided right now cause it's a good time for games. SSF4, S/S, RDR, various Pokeymanz, etc.
Me personally? I'll be all over this board when the game is in my hands next week.
Still at work until tomorrow, but I'll be picking this up on Saturday, absolutely Hopefully my house mate and a few other mates will be interested in having a 4-player split screen multi on Sunday arvo

There is going to be a lot of "How the hell do I do this?" at first I think. Still excited, just kinda distracted this weekend.

I need to get better at using the shield ability. As in, I need to learn how to use it at all.
I was able to download it about 3 hours ago, actually.
And the only bummer about the demo is that you can't actually race as any Mods you make or use any karts you make.
That's fine. I'm just going to experiment with the track maker and maybe hook up with you all later in the week for some test runs.
