I'm thinking about getting one a iPhone 3Gs. It looks like the best way to make it affordable is to sign a 3 year contract. This is not something I want to do. It seems that the 4 companies that carry iPhones sell the phone for the same price and the plans are very similar in what you get and price.
I've been out of the cell phone game for almost a year now. I would like to get it now. I plan to move in a couple months. I don't see that being a problem.
My thoughts are a little scattered. I guess I'm looking for help/advice on carriers and plans for an iphone in BC.
hit the hofo forums for the various carriers and read around / ask questions there. can't think of a better resource. they'll inform you of coverage and differences in plans and policies

In BC you can choose between Rogers, Telus, and Bell for the iPhone.
That's it, that's all.
They have their strengths and weaknesses, but unless you're living in one of the bumfuck nowhere bits of BC coverage won't be an issue. If you post where you're moving to I may be able to tell you what your options are.
And you will need to go 3-year to afford the phone.
It's things like this that make me glad I changed my mind about getting a smartphone and dropped to a single pay-as-you-go line. Buying a cell in Canada is akin to wearing assless chaps on the waterfront in Bangkok while holding a sign that says "Get It Here."

Victoria will (obviously) be fine for any carrier, although there may be dead zones elsewhere on the island.
But you'll be in Victoria, which is the only place worth going on the island anyway.

Also, keep in mind, the new iPhone is coming out this summer. If you're signing a 3 year contract you may not want to get the "old" version since I hear the new one will finally be able to multitask. Just something to think about when your contract is that long.

yeah, I just found that out this morning while looking in to things. I guess be holding off on things until then see if the new one is worth it, not that I would know if I had all the details, or pick up a hopefully cheaper 3Gs.
I am with Telus, and have been with Bell. Comparing the two, Telus is crazy good.
Great plans, great coverage, the customer service is actually quite good as well. I'm in Ontario, and I'm not sure what the coverage is like in BC, but if you're asking in terms of service satisfaction, I give Telus a vote.
