Computer Problems (Host Process)

Quite suddenly, whenever I start my computer it will generally start up as normal, I'll be able to open programs and get on the internet for a couple of minutes, then a dialog box pops up that says "Host Process for Windows Services stopped working and was closed". Then my wireless internet stops working, my computer becomes laggy and the screen flashes periodically. I tried doing windows update and a system restore to no avail, neither of these things are working. In safe mode I don't get the message, however no programs will start.

Anyone have any idea what I can do?

    Do you use McAfee?

Well, that would have been too obvious, since this last week, a McAfee update was treating svchost as a virus to be quarantined.

Anyhow, since that's not it, there's not a lot I can offer. I've heard of some malware causing issues with that, so you probably want to go through the usual scans, but I don't remember specifics. If you think that might be it, googling "svchost malware" seems to give some useful links.

Sorry I can't be more helpful.

Woo, fixed it. I got windows update to work and installed Service Pack 1. Everything seems fine now.
