I just bought this at GameStop's latest B2G1F sale. I'll eventually play it, but for now to the back of the line!

I also picked it up, along with Medal of Honor, Prey and another game I can't remember the name of, in a 2 for £10 deal. This was the same day I bought Syndicate. So yeah, lots of games to play.

Only got a few hours on Nier, and have loved it so far (except for fishing. Fuck fishing, I failed repeatedly to get the Quest Fish you need, and in the end the game just gives it to you).

I'll put it on the shelf for now, as Mass Effect 3 is here in 6 days, and I'm going to mop up loose achievements until then, to avoid getting too deep into a new game.

Also I have 3 new books to read, after not reading for ages.

So yes - get Nier, it's great !

Just throwing it out there, this is easily one of my favorite games ever. Top 3. Easily.

And I say this, having completed the game 4 times, gotten all 4 endings - and never doing a single fishing mission other than the first one you have to do, that you automatically pass anyway. I didnt like fishing, I skipped it, it didnt hurt the experience at all.

I also only did like 20% of the sidequests.

Nier is the absolute definition of a game that you literally should only be doing things you enjoy. There is a LOT to do, and to people who like to grind for weapons, play a farming simulator, do fishing, be a completionist, blah blah, its all there.

But absolutely none of it is necessary, and once I just decided to only partake in things I wanted to, it was amazing. Not knowing that 51% is the cutoff was a huge plus to me - as I would have totally tried to get all. Hitting that point of no return, and just having to go "oh, shit. Well, must press on." was the best thing that could have happened to me.

From what I'm finding, the story is interesting with moments of awesome for the first half, then after the midpoint because REALLY good when things start unravelling and pulling together. And I am okay with this.

That game was mental. Though I only ever played three of their games - this one, the one that came before it, and Bullet Witch.

I just planted a mix of blue and gold Moonflower seeds. I already have about 14 Peach Moonflower Seeds. Maybe I hate myself. (But farming hasn't bothered me as I only do it once every three days. Plant, grow, harvest.)

So I did some stuff in Facade.
    Like, the Wedding.
And then I fought the wolf shade, and the King of Facade killed it. And the expression on the wolf's face as the King speared it made me have to save, quit the game, and go do something cheery for a while.

It might have had something to do with what Emil had just done in The Aerie, however.

getting all the weapons? It's really not that hard. Upgrading all the weapons to maximum is a living nightmare, but that's not required for the last ending.

I have a feeling that NG+ is going to wholly cement the 'you really shouldn't be doing this' feeling I'm getting.

Finished all the fishing quests, other than the 'get catfish for the innkeeper' one, then I'm clearing up Facade's sidequests before heading to the last area. I think I have about 83% of the quests done.

Just back up your saves to a USB drive. Then after it's done the deed, put 'em back. The game doesn't really give a hoot if you cheat like that.

    Although yes,
you can just back up the save file if you want to. I still have the usb I copied mine onto, even though I no longer have the game. I sometimes think about getting another copy, but it feels like no, I'm done with it, and that's how it's supposed to be.

Popola and Devola were being unreasonable. They wouldn't even talk, they just attacked him.

Honestly, I think that in his position, I would do things the same way. I mean, when you think about it?
He doesn't give a shit about the plan to save the world. He is NOT the original 'Nier', he's the Replicant that has gained sentience. He wants his daughter back. His daughter is the Yonah Replicant that gained sentience. He doesn't care about reuniting the Gestalts with their Replicants to rebuild the human race as they were, he's his own entity now with his own friends and agenda. The Gestalts that want to claim their bodies back are going to effectively kill everyone he's ever known. It's the Gestalts or the Replicants, and neither side want to die.

Still, it's sad as all hell seeing things from their side, knowing that no-one's in the wrong, as such. (Apart from the Gestalts that went mad and started killing Replicants rather than merging with them - is that what happened?)

The requirement for getting the last ending keeps me from playing this game as much as I should. I want to do it all, but man.. that. Just man.

    Cheer up.

(Spoilers for the real ending, which apparently doesn't even take place in the game itself.)
Word is they released a novel in Japan with an extra ending that essentially takes place after that ending.

I never got the full details, but from the sound of it, Nier eventually comes back as a human (Maybe on the human part.), Kaine is alive after going on her own little quest to help bring Nier back (Albeit possibly with no memory of the events of the game, which means all the character development she and Nier got is gone.), and humanity probably won't die a slow, quiet death!
Though it sounds like just about everyone else other then the immediate characters like Nier, Kaine, and his daughter are doomed to go extinct, though. Since Kaine and Nier are probably the last real humans left and it's on them to end up rebooting both species. Still a rather gloomy ending, but it points out that life will go on. It's just going to suck for a good long while.

So typical Drakengard style fare, only instead of the endings getting progressively worse like in most of this series as you go on, the last one is actually not a complete mind-bending cock slap in the face. It's a reward for perseverance.

You can probably thank the company that made this getting absorbed by a larger company before they could get all the DLC out (They said they wanted to make a ton of DLC in 2011. They were taken over towards the end of 2010.) as the cause on why most people will never see this stuff. And why that ending isn't present in-game as DLC. Apparently they had to release it in the form of out of game expanded materials as opposed to putting it in the game itself as a result.

Sounds like that ending would have had players take over
Kaine, after you (Don't click this if you haven't gotten at least ending C.)
Deleted your save. So you'd lose access to Nier, but gain a new character.

I'd give links to the thing. But accurate information on it is split up between about fifty different places. If you want to look it up, just google
Nier Ending E. Be ready to do some digging though. There's a ton of misinformation and bad translations of the book.

Oh hey, there they are, all at the end! Also spoilers.
So at first I was under the impression that the end of humanity was Replicant Nier's fault, then I think that Gestalt Nier is just as much at fault because he went on the rampage for Replicant Yonah's body that caused so many more Shades to relapse. But really?
It's Kainé's fault for snapping Weiss out of Noir's attempt to fuse them before the timeskip.

    I knoooooooooow Rent.

It's next on the list I swear. I need to clear this backlog. Almost done with New Vegas, then Bastion. I SWEAR.

But the real reason I came back in here?

I had heard, from our good buddy Rent, the only good thing about the DLC was the soundtrack. And I just always thought, oh, that makes sense. It has a great soundtrack.

Well this morning I had a lot of tedious work to do at work. So I was listening to the NieR soundtrack and was like, hmmm, I never did find the DLC tracks on YouTube.

    Ending faults:
It's Replicant Nier's fault for wanting to get his daughter back at all costs, but what father would give up his daughter for the sake of humanity?

It's Gestalt Nier's fault for rampaging to get Yonah back, but you cannot blame him as humanity was playing him for a fool and wanted him to remain as he is, forever separated from his daughter.

It's Devola's and Popola's fault for following their orders, but they were androids programmed for a specific purpose, to follow a specific protocol. Can you blame a computer for not functioning outside their specifications?

It's Kaine's fault for knowing what's going on with the shades and not doing anything about it, but all she wanted was happiness for Replicant Nier and herself.

Nothing is quite as it seems, and nothing is simple.
The real fault lies with the JDF.

Two lines really stuck out at me.
    "I don't care if it's smoking a cigar and wearing a tuxedo, if it's a shade I'm killing it."

    and

"You want me to feel sorry for you???"

I actually felt more strongly that I wanted to win against the gestault in ending B than ending A. I very decisively ended all the bosses in ending B even though I knew their backstories. It increased my motivation dramatically. I'm not sure what that says about a person, but it made me think about myself. I'm usually a "light side" kind of protagonist in rpgs, but in this game, put against the wall, asked to pick two sides...I picked him and his daughter over the world without hesitation. When he said "You want me to feel sorry for you?" in ending B I was feeling exactly what he was.

I think the real deal with this game is that...
You can't blame anyone. In their shoes, anyone would do pretty much exactly the same thing. Like B:L said, the fault lies with the way the JDF handled the original problem. But if they hadn't done THAT, humanity wouldn't have even gotten as far as it did.

And I think that is why I love this game. It's incredibly bleak.

I do have ONE thing that makes me wonder, however. Even if body (replicant) and soul (gestalt) are reunited, how are they going to reproduce and continue? Unless imbuing an artificial body with a much recycled soul gives the body the ability to reproduce. Devola and Popola all but confirm that they are the SAME as the replicants - artifical bodies that is - only they have programming and instructions rather than spontaneously attaining sentience.

It's implied that the replicant data is just reused whenever someone is meant to have a baby, and that the ability to keep that data on file is not infallible (Kainé's problem), and it's also implied by the presence of 'baby shades' that don't know any better (the ones that UNITE AND FORM GOOSE in the Shadowlord's Castle) that they can recycle Gestalts that have been torn up by Nier, the crux of the whole plan is that they need Gestalt Nier's 'demonic particle' to stabilise Gestalts so they don't relapse. So why not just make some baby bodies, make some baby souls, and jam them together while androids watch over them? Unless the WCS and Legion are still out there someplace. It's also implied that Devola and Popola aren't the only androids watching over the world, they're just the ones in this area, right? It's a stretch.

It's nice, but I feel the other instruments are really necessary to properly layer the interconnected harmonics of NieR's melodies. Also not a fan of the jazzy Ashes of Dreams.

    As for your endgame spoilers:
Yes I do believe Grimoire NieR and the game referred to other areas, but from what I recall they were either falling in shambles or falling to the shades. I could be wrong but that's what I remember...
