Oh, the HDR or whatever is hilariously overdone, yes.

And my God I think I'm going to have to restore my saves. Well, pray they restore. The DLC is simply impossible with a starting character (well, probably not impossible; I'm sure some lizard-brained fan somewhere in the world is going to prove it can be done). Basic enemies are one-shotting me and the game promptly throws me out of the dungeon when I die every. Single. Time. Not very promising.

Played through to the second ending. I have two questions:
What are monsters, and why do they exist?

So you can restore saves - the system file that notes you've got the new title screen doesn't seem to mind you're using the old data. Which leads me to a new thing to bitch about - predictably now it's far too frigging easy. I like the new music, I don't really regret buying it, but Christ... how hard would it have been? Grading system based on how many HP you went in with, what items you used, what weapons you did it with... and don't kick me straight out when I die, and don't make that the only way of quitting! I accidentally stayed in when I'd cleared the first stage, and now I have to get ready to go out... had to quit the entire game and lose my damn progress because I was now too powerful to kill myself and it would have taken too long to do the levels again. </pant, pant> Bah. Oh well.

So yeah, looks like it's just as horribly-flawed-yet-appealing as the main game (The new music is much better than I would have expected - remixes of the main themes that sound pretty good). Oh, and it makes it absolutely rock-solid canon it's a Drakengard... well, sort of a sequel. It certainly makes it explicitly clear that ending gave rise to this game.

You have to climb up the bridge that leads out of the map to the north. Climbing the ladder up the closest pillar down in that area (the sunken bit where you found the dog) will take you into a little side-scrolling section - keep going through that and you'll end up on top of the bridge. Follow it along to the north and you'll get to the door to the Junk Heap area. There's a shop/new NPCs there, a save point and another dungeon which you'll end returning to a greeeeeat many times.

Yeah that ladder is hidden well despite not even trying to be hidden well. Its really weird. I couldnt find it for so long my first time playing and my friend was telling me to go there and I was like wait...Whats the Junk Heap? But the ladder is there right next to where you found the dog in that quest.

Yeah and I think I'm done. Roughly 44 hours or so, all four endings, about 60% of the quests, beat the DLC. Messed around with the minigames a little, but I honestly can't be bothered with fishing or gardening given they give negligible in-game benefits at best, and I'm certainly not going for those trophies. Ditto weapons; once you've got the Phoenix Spear, anything else is pointless, at least on Normal. And I'm not even talking about upgrading them. Nothing does enough damage to make different weapon styles worth bothering with - you'll never get hurt fast enough the spears' lack of speed is a problem, and they're faster than greatswords, so they win. Shame. The combat does have depth of a sort, but it all goes unused - it's not even close to something like Ryu Ga Gotoku: Kenzan!.

Still, god damn it was fun. Quite possibly the best bad game I've ever played. Like a film you know is terrible, but where the director's saying or showing you something you simply cannot ignore. Brilliant localisation and casting job, some wonderful writing, and that soundtrack... it was worth the frustration for the atmosphere alone. Edge UK basically went for 'shitty fetchquest is still shitty even with a wisecracking book tagging along', and I know what they mean, but... while I couldn't bring myself to do all of them it was still worth it doing some, just for more of that banter. I've hardly ever played anything else quite like it.

Don't ever change, Cavia. Batshit insane and questionably talented is just the way I like you. I might even buy more DLC, just to show you how much. <3

I am like 32% done with the sidequests. According to the game I have been holding on to this shaman fish for a month and four days. I am at 8 hours and am only that far in the story. Basically what I'm asking is can anyone tell me what % of the quests I should have done before a certain point? And possibly number of quests, so I can go through my list and see that I have them all? Because I hear tales that the first half of the game's quests are not in NG+ and are thus missable. I've caught so many damn fish though that I can't let it be for naught. I need all 100% of the quests now.

I am mostly certain 50% complete is the magic number for sidequests before the cutoff point, it might be 51% or something. The fishing quests are the only ones that carry through and can be completed after the cutoff. I believe the most obscure quest is someone in Seafront who you have to talk to repeatedly before you get it; everything else can be distributed to you through Devola in the tavern in your Village.

Also, no spoilers beyond a location here but if you think you've missed anything go look around after finishing the plot in the
    Spooky black-and-white mansion.

Don't talk to anyone after that unless you want to move the story forward and are satisfied with how many quests you've done.

Thanks, I just clicked the spoiler to find out the area to save me the pain. I knew I'd go there anyway, so at least now I know it's the cutoff. I'll get 50% at least and then make a backup save at that point. Also what's the deal with Devola? She doesn't seem to always tell me the quests, yet she triggers them sometimes. Like I could not trigger the postman quests at all until I talked to her. She wouldn't tell me the quest for the guy in the bar right next to her though. Does she only tell you some of them and I still have to go looking?

51% before the move-on point. You can never go back to do those quests aftr the game changes over so finish em all if you care.

Someone started a Nier thread! I was worried I'd have to.

Let me tell you guys how much I like Nier. It's a lot.

I got to the second half of the game, where things change somewhat, and some of the first half quests stop being available. For anyone who wants to guard against this, it's right after you go through the Resident Evil mansion. Specifically, you're sent to get some vapor moss. Don't do it if you're a ridiculous completionist.

Well after having some of my quests turn uncompletable, I was all "Oh well, I'll do them in NG+ lol!" Little did I know that NG+ starts at the halfway point of the game. So anything you miss (which is just quests, all of which just have money rewards, the only weapon-reward quests are in part 2) is gone forever.

I beat it, find this out, and start the fuck over!

I am now basically able to go get endings C and D on a whim, have 100% quest completion, and am making good progress toward the platinum trophy. My main roadblock to that, as it is for anyone, is the upgrade everything to max.

Ask me Nier questions, I have answers.

I think something about the shaman fish being at a beach A WHOLE 20 SECONDS OF RUNNING AWAY from the old man should be in the OP. I'm so sad that not one but two reviewers have gotten stuck there and given up like sissies. Clearly these assholes never played any Nintendo games.

Also Wired's review explains pretty well what I believe Nier is: a love letter to gamers. Every knowing inclusion of yet another genre's hallmark, every camera change that makes you forget you have certain abilities, it's all saying "We are gamers too, and man, games are awesome!"

    Wired review, for those interested.

I preordered this game on pedigree, and am quite pleased. I got the DLC, but I'm leery of firing it up before I get the platinum. I'll probably do it when all I have left is maxing out all the weapons.

Eagle eggs can rot in hell!

    Correct.

Also you can basically just use Devola. She will send you to every quest in the game, nothing is hidden. If there's a quest that you can do right now that you haven't, and it's not the one she's already sent you to, she'll be a friendly white circle with a dot in it, waiting in the tavern.

About 2/3 of the way through the DLC stuff and I actually like it quite a bit.

I was afraid I'd be overleveled for it so I upped the difficulty to Hard and restricted myself to using Moonrise for a weapon which challenged things up immensely. Turns out either DLC enemies are different than the rest of the game or hard enemies have one significant difference to normal: your attacks can't interrupt theirs. Wading into a group of 8 little sword shades is asking for pain if they all get to take chunks out of you while you try to kill them, prompting quick adoption of hit and run techniques and magic to separate them a bit. All in all, having to do something other than "tap button, things die" improves combat immensely.

Of course the only downside to Hard mode was the one part of the DLC:
in the basketball court area, to be specific.
The big armoured shades there have obscenely high health on hard. I had to switch to one of the better spears and still spent 20 minutes chipping away at 5 of them, burned half my capsules and most of my meds.

Oh, and the music is just as good as advertised. Techno and rock guitar remixes of quite a few of the themes. I really need to find the remix of the last fight music they added in, hopefully something turns up on youtube or the internet soonish.

You can do the DLC at any point once you've got Weiss, Kainy. Even when you've only just started from scratch, though it's practically impossible for a low-level character. Either way, it doesn't affect the rest of the game in any way beyond giving you some new weapons/costumes, though I don't know if the weapons affect the trophies - did it say upgrade 'all', or upgrade '30' to max?

I'm really, really not a huge fan of emergent play or any such thing, so basically unless the game gives me an explicitly stated reason to limit myself, I'm unlikely to do it. I don't regret buying the DLC and like I said, I'd probably buy more, but... it is a cheap and cheerful hack job, as far as I'm concerned, much like the main game itself, and I think it should have had some kind of scoring system in place.

The music is excellent, and I wish they'd released it, though I think there's only about four or five tunes in there - they repeat a lot. Still great, though. So much videogame music has no clue how to use guitar, much less electronic instrumentation - why people worship The Black Mages so much I will never understand, both of their albums are godawful (and coincidentally the Einhander soundtrack was crap too :P). With that in mind it was a huge surprise to hear someone doing hard-edged remixes of a very gentle, restrained soundtrack and making them work so well. They feel like they should have been in the game from day one.

If you mean black pearls, I have loooooads of them. I'm pretty thorough about harvesting every harvest point every time I'm anywhere, and it's paid off. I have pretty big stockpiles of most of the rare mats.

Just played through the DLC, it was fun, and yes, the music was great. I kind of wish the whole game's combat had been like that - you know, actually giving me a reson to switch magic frequently, needing to use strong weapons and switch weapon types occasionally to deal with different threats, and loads of fairly tough enemies. One of the biggest problems I see in the game is that unless you limit yourself to joke weapons, you'll be significantly overleveled by the second half.

How the fuck do I use the new costumes I unlocked? My theory was that the girl in seafront who always says she's not ready to open for business yet would be the DLC stuff store, but it appears I'm wrong, having just gone down to Seafront and visited her.

Edit: To use costumes you unlock in the DLC you select it from the title screen's options menu. Sadly you can only select a theme for your party, not individual costumes for individual party members. I say sadly because Nier's original costume is my favorite, while some of the other ones are pretty neat on the other characters.

Probably going to get the C and D endings today, and then it's time to hunker down to some serious farman.

It says to upgrade "30" to max but the DLC weapons dont count sadly. I know this because I got 15 weapons maxed just last night (3 of them being the 3 new DLC weapons) and I didnt get the 15 maxed achievement. So they dont count. You have no choice but to level up all 30 main game weapons. Was so hoping to avoid the Pheonix weapons too...

Also Kainy do the DLC because the 3rd area in the DLC is a very nice way to get some much needed forging items and money. Ive jsut been farming Junk Heap/DLC and I have ...18 weapons left to max out. A lot but most are at level 3. Almost 60 hours on this game and despite the constant grind I just cannot find it boring. I love this game too damn much...

Also Kainy I dont know if you know this but for the love of god dont do the D ending unless youre positive youre done with Nier because it WILL delete every save file you have. I dont know if it prompts this because I havent done it yet but just a heads up to save some insane grief incase it doesnt.

The farming does indeed run in real time, and yes, you can cheat it by advancing your system clock. Again, I just can't be bothered. The only reason for me would be to get the trophy for the rarest type of flower. GameFAQs explains how to do that.

And note that although D deletes your save files, you can back them up and then restore them if you want to. You can even keep the same system file; I'm pretty sure there's a new menu screen when you've seen all four endings (It was just plain black to begin with, right? There's a
    lunar tear flower
sitting there now) and you can't use a profile name you've already taken through ending D, either. Yet at the same time I was able to copy the old saves back and reload them, no hassle.

This is honestly the most fun I've had with a game in a long time.

    ending spoilers and such:
So like, all the twists and turns had me going 'Noooooo' and 'what?!' like crazy. Well fun. The second half of the game seemed really depressing though. All those people who died D:

Started up new game right away and loved reading through Kaine's story. It's nice to read all this text actually. Was a suprise and adds a lot to the back story.

tl:dr I really love this game.

Second playthrough is the best, really. C and D only add a little more (though you still get the extra stuff you got going for B). I still loved the story enough to do two reloads, though I just used the same save right before the end for C and D.

Ah you can choose which one you want for that then?

Yeah, no spoilers, but ending C and D hinge on a choice. The game treats it as if you're going to do a fourth playthrough, but you can just reload the last possible save and run through the final area again.

Ok, I just rented this so no manual, so I'm not sure if this is explained there or not but it's bugging me.

    Is it explained later why
They jump 1300 years and are still alive? So far I've only killed sheep, and I don't care if it's a slight spoiler, but if they never explain it, I will really be bugged.

Play the game my friend. This games story is a treat to be found out and ...lets just say you see different perspectives on things when you figure it all out.

Edit: also ...um...7 weapons left to max out!

Finally, 51% of the quests. The only one I had trouble with was "The Missing Girl". I just couldn't find the trigger on the ground for the life of me.

You my friend are not alone. That quest was making me angry. I have 97% of the Quests done at this moment. I need my Pinks to die so I can loot their seeds and finish one. And the other is on top of the Lost Shrine. Ive just been lazy and farming for a while before trying that.

I'm not sure how you got a fucking Lunar Tear without getting like 200 pink moonflower seeds.

Cause I know that's about how many I sold before those stupid flower bastards would have sex with each other.

I've done the DLC, it was neat, especially as someone who played the fuck out of the Drakengards. I was left wishing that the combat in the rest of the game could've been as hard and enjoyable, though.

I think I'm going to farm all I need of one type of material a day, and then do more if I feel like it. That'll get me done eventually.

From what I can tell I got very lucky. When I finally got my Pink seeds I only got 4 seeds to I did Peach Pink Peach Pink Peach for only two rows. Then they grew and died and I got a bunch more pinks and no Tear. But then my next batch, full this time since I had many more seeds, gave a Lunar Tear :)

And yeah the material farming is a total whore. I have like 7 weapons left but Subdued bracelets and the fucking Elaborate Machines are driving me crazy.

Also Black Pearls. Fuck Black Pearls.
