I like reading the news. Yet lately I have found myself yearning to go outside my usual sources and hopefully find a good news collection page to both broaden my horizons, and hopefully just get me reading even more about current events. The perfect thing would be a source that strikes a good balance between customization of features and being so personalized that I'm only reading about stuff I have pre-selected. I know something like this exists, but don't really know how to tell a good idea from a crappy one.
Bonus points for something that can get all my various interests (sports, law, politics, technology, cars, travel, world events, food and more!) complied on one easy-to-read, quick-to-load page.

I love Google News. If you go to the bottom of the site, you can scroll through top articles by different category and see more than just the headline.
A few of the new blotters/blogs/magazines I use daily.
Fark.com as previously stated lots of great stuff. http://www.economist.com/world/ My favorite magazine for world news. Fairly balanced and will make you more informed. If you don't care much for world news than it might not be fore you. http://theweek.com/home The week is a great magazine that is pretty much like a congressional/general brief. It has both sides most issues and everything you want to know.
for tech news http://www.gearfuse.com/ a goofy blog of nerd stuff. http://gizmodo.com/ A great network of info. lots of updates. The life hacker section can be pretty great.
I like BBC, but I can't tell if your Fox comment is supposed to be sarcastic, which makes me question the sincerity of your entire post! That aside, BBC has pretty broad and relatively thorough coverage, although there are certain rare topics/regions that have a fairly particular viewpoint represented. I wouldn't think that's really a factor for the most part though.
I also check Ars Technica, HardOCP, NY Times, and a few other random places for various types of news.

Oh God, someone thought I was seriously advocating Fox as "news"? Interweb sarcasm fail.
To be clear:
BBC = Good
Fox = Bad (though occasionally funny, in an "I'm so glad I don't live there" kind of way)
I like Digg myself. Pretty good variety of topics. Though they seem to love to post blog spam instead of the actual source of the news. And alot of it is not really news but just silly gooses acting like silly gooses.

BBC = terrible as far as RSS goes though. All of 5 words get printed, and you have to click through to read anything. I can't be arsed to bother.
Fark sounds great. I'm going to check it out.
I check boingboing.net daily. I like the individual bloggers there with their different interests. Plus it has Cory Doctorow (+/-)
edit - just subscribed to fark.com in my google reader. First headline was "Watch the Gulf oil spill grow, kill Tasha Yar for no conceivable reason". Spit my drink all over my eggs.

I heard someone refer to gizmodo's "Checkbook Journalism" the other day. I gotta say, they do seem a bit biased at certain things. Which is kinda sad, cause I really like gizmodo, but stuff like engadget seems more reputable.
I like http://www.reddit.com, which also has the advantage of having your own personal "homepage" like Google News where you can just look at submissions to the categories that interest you the most.
Personally, I usually read either Asia Times or the Daily Irritant. Both, of course, are somewhat biased towards the left.
The Irritant is especially interesting because it actually has news that are a big deal over here in Europe but not so in America, i.e. school-shootings and such.

I would like to pause for a moment, to talk about my penis.
My penis is like a toddler. A toddler—who is a perfectly normal size for his age—on a long road trip to what he thinks is Disney World. My penis is excited because he hasn’t been to Disney World in a long, long time, but remembers a time when he used to go every day. So now the penis toddler is constantly fidgeting, whining “Are we there yet? Are we there yet? How about now? Now? How about... now?”
And Disney World is nowhere in sight.
The Irritant is especially interesting because it actually has news that are a big deal over here in Europe but not so in America, i.e. school-shootings and such.
And because it refers to the United States of America pretty much entirely as "U$" or "U$A"
Xeno-based news ought serve your purposes as they don't have much of a domestic market for the sort of public outrage that our country loves, consumes, and claims it "hates to see."

I don't know, because of their paying editors based on click count, I've always seen most of the gawker sites as sketchy as geese. They have a much lower bar for determining what is worthwhile 'news', such as Kotaku's rape fetish and Gizmodo intentionally(?) putting slants on their posts to try to fan the flames. Especially for Apple products.

An annoying habit, but one that doesn't affect the qualitiy of their news. One could easily skip the political stuff and just stick to the science related articles.

Fark is actually really great, and has some of the off-beat random stories as well as the more mainstream articles. And the best headlines, EVER.
I hear that Fox is pretty balanced too...
Just brace for fail of the likes that you rarely see if you read the comments. But some of the comments are beyond any quality you'll see elsewhere.
It's a real toss-up
Thirded. The headlines are great, but sometimes people take liberties with them vs what the story is actually about.

I second this. For those that don't know, the IHT is the Global Edition of The New York Times.

Two BIG recommendations: BBC and The Economist.
It's a step up from Amerikkka
