krav in israel is something most americans who study martial arts won't really ever understand
there is a level of brutality in the training that isn't present in the american culture of martial arts
Isn't it basically, strike as hard as humanly possible in the most vulnerable areas, using the dirtiest tricks possible, until your opponent is fully incapacitated? It's a practical martial art. As in, I can't imagine you would do Krav Maga sparring for fun. It's just for saving your own life in a bad situation.

That's the philosophy of most striking arts though. It doesn't mean you can't train more gently for educational purposes.

not only striking, but sort of. full incapacitation isn't the practical end being sought. unmolested escape is.
-evaluate avenues of escape
-if none exist (via the obstacle of an attacker), degrade the obstacle (fuck him up)
-continually reassess for avenues of escape
if he drops and is still 'in the game' but i can safely escape? good engagement
In comparison to jujutsu, bjj is almost entirely groundwork, am I right?
skippy, you seem to know what you're talking about. Could you give me the low-down on bjj? I did Japanese jujutsu for a while but since I came to London I can't find any decent classes in it, so bjj seems like a natural alternative.
um, I know a bit
organ and DUE may also be able to help
but
BJJ is basically a fighting style that says hey, if someone is bigger than you, they are probably going to be able to knock your block off
but if you end up on the ground, as most fights do, it doesn't really matter how big they are because technique > size/strength
so here, learn how to move people's joints against their natural inclination to cause a submission
or here, learn how to stop the flow of blood or air to the brain so that they pass out and you can run away
there are no katas or anything, just technique, and the focus (in my experience) is on what works for you best
because practicality is king

There's this BJJ place that just opened up but I have no idea how to tell if it's any good.
is it a gracie school
I have no idea what that is.
does it have a website
The one I was thinking of is brand new and I couldn't find a website. I found this other place that seems to have been around much longer and it basically piggy-backs on an MMA gym database.

More traditional martial arts tend to have a more spiritual side where you focus on set forms and stuff. not to mention learning moves that serve little purpose in an actual fight.
Krav doesn't pretend to be anything but hurting people

Is it true that martial arts in America tend to be like, thirty minute classes with breaks for coffee and biscuits?

Experience the power of the boombox.
Bea Arthur totally was.
being a medic I have learned how to punch or kick people very, very painfully
Turns out the spots where you put tourniquets to stop catastrophic blood loss also hurt really really bad if you smash your heel into them

the bjj place where I most recently trained was an hour, and then the senior people could stay for an additional hour
some days he would be like, fuck you guys I am going to smoke you out and have us roll the entire time
I think it was 5 minute sparring with 2 minute breaks in between?

i have a pretty big refractory period so this q&a might take a while
That's like striking philosophy in reverse. This is why I need to keep training in more than one style.
You know this from all of your rape practice.
Well not the decent ones.
and she was all "hah, i'm the boss" while on top of me

Most of the time when people want to do things like that, they discuss it in advance.
