Weird problem on my laptop

I'm having a weird kind of lockup when I play certain games. In Bioshock for instance, moving the mouse causes the display to freeze for a couple of seconds, rendering the game unplayable. In Terran Conflict I get the exact same kind of freeze but when I press a keyboard key. Finally, in Blood Money I get a freeze whenever the keyboard and mouse are used at the same time.

The thing is, I've played Blood Money before on this computer and it worked fine. I've tried updating drivers (as much as I'm able to on a sony laptop). I think it could be a codec problem, I've previously installed one of those giant codec packs on this computer. That's all I can think of anyway. Any suggestions?

All three games are running through Steam, but Left 4 Dead 2 runs fine.

Although thinking about it Bioshock 2 works fine and that isn't a Steam game. Maybe Steam is the culprit.

Maybe your laptop's having trouble with the new Steam interface? Try switching it off in-game (I think that's still an option...) and see if things improve.

I managed to solve this one JUST before you posted, but you were actually right. It wasn't the new Steam interface, but it was solved by turning the interface off. Thank you!
