So whenever I plug in my 500 gb external HDD lately, I get this message in Windows 7. I've been skipping this "process." It doesn't seem like there's anything wrong with the data, though, so two questions:
1) What potentially caused this? I get this with small memory cards sometimes as well (usually MicroSDHC cards). I never really understood what "corrupts" it or whatever.
2) Is there a risk of Windows 7 completely fucking my data up if I let it "scan and fix"?
Have you unplugged the drive and gotten the "you should eject it first" message? It might simply remember the drive and is offering to scan for any errors that might have occurred due to ejecting it.

If you have an ipod don't click to "scan and fix" apparently.
