When I Was a Wii Lad..

Well, I'm finally caving in after not playing video games for years now and getting a Wii for the household. The only thing I'm completely stumped on is what games are worth getting? Mind you, I plan on setting it up in the family room where it's going to get some used from my sister, mother and myself. What kind of games can you guys recommend? As for me I'm into shooters, platformers and fighting games. I noticed my ma takes interest in the Wii Sports deals, what else does Nintendo market that's along these lines? I have no clue what's been going on with the video game industry since Xbox 360 first came out.
Please aid me on my quest, Penny Arcade! My quest for mind-numbing, hand-eye coordinating goodness!
Super Smash Brothers was great, I liked it and it was the first one I played. Galaxy is a must own, I didn't really like the new zelda too much but it got real good reviews. Zak and Wiki is fun if you love (I really mean love) a challenge. Its a classic adventure style puzzle game which uses the wii mote for a lot of actions, like sawing or turning stuff. It requires a lot of trial and error, and tons of patience. Wario Ware Smooth Moves is pretty fun, I wouldn't recommend ever playing it drunk though.
Smash Bros Brawl, Mario Kart, Mario Galaxy, Galaxy 2 is coming out soon. Metroid Prime Trilogy if you can find it.
Boom Blox and its sequel (Party...Bash...or something...) are awesome for getting several people together and having a good time. Physics-based block building and destruction, jenga, explosions...just great stuff.
House of the Dead Overkill is insane and awesome but you can't play it in front of the family.
Endless Ocean Blue World is really fun; don't bother with the first game, the second one supplants it. It's hard to describe, basically an ocean simulator with lots of things to do, treasure to salvage, dolphins to train.
If you like fighting games, Tatsunoko vs. Capcom is supposed to be great, even though you probably have no idea what Tatsunoko is. It's well animated and very balanced, though I don't own it myself.
Download World of Goo, maybe Dr. Mario (great for 2 players), and both Lost Winds games.
New Super Mario Bros.
4-player simultaneous co-op makes for a hell of a lot of party fun. Super Smash Bros. Brawl is also excellent, as is Mario Kart Wii.
If your ma is into Wii Sports, look into Wii Sports Resort(a good way to get Wii Motion+ as well as being fun) and of course Wii Fit, which is all the rage.
If it's not going to be family-friendly entertainment all the time, pick up No More Heroes and No More Heroes 2. Trust me, they're awesome. Very M-rated, but awesome.
Red Steel 2 is aces(don't get Red Steel 1), the Metroid Prime Trilogy is an excellent series of platformer/adventure/shooter games in a gorgeous package.

Endless Ocean 2. Get it.
I also really like Wii Sports Resort. Animal Crossing could be fun for the family to play together.
Also get Bit.Trip Beat and Bit.Trip Core on WiiWare. The first one is basically Pong meets Rez with 8-bit style music, and the second one is more of a rhythm game. Look videos up on youtube, it'll make more sense.
Little King's Story and Silent Hill: Shattered Memories are the best third-party games for the system, and both absolutely amazing, though in entirely different ways.
Get them.
And if you don't already have some other way to do it, if you have a netflix account, get a Wii disc from them so you can stream Watch Instantly movies to your tv.
Going to Echo the Mario games (Both New Super Mario Bros. and Mario Galaxy). Smash Bros is fun too, but I found it got old after a while.
Muramasa, the Demon Blade, is an excellent side-scrolling action game with gorgeous hand-drawn graphics.
If you're into adventure/RPGs, I can't recommend Monster Hunter Tri enough. It's challenging, and would be more for you than or the rest of the family, as it's a bit on the hardcore side, but it's massive fun, especially if you join us online.
