I believe about 1,5/2 years ago I was wandering around in a store looking around for interesting stuff when the box art of Beyond Good and Evil (BGE) attracted my attention. When I noticed the game was on sale for only €20,-/$25,- I was sold. I spend the next 2 days enjoying this beautiful game and consider it one of the best games I have played in years.
Sadly enough the game did not do very well in sales and was a commercial failure. This was partly due to the time it was released and the horrible advertising campaign or lack thereof.

This action-adventure game was released late in 2003 by Ubisoft on various platforms. (PC/GC/Xbox/PS2) The critics loved the game with the majority of them rating it between a 8,5 and a 9,0. It was created by Michel Ancel who is known for his rayman games and his latest game being Rayman Raving Rabbids.
BGE was dubbed and translated to at least 10 languages and it was done so with utmost care. I think it might be one of the best examples of how to localize a game. (I own the Dutch version and they did a great job at it)
Story
BGE takes place on the planet Hillys. Many different species live on Hillys including anthropomorphic pigs/birds/rhinos/etc. Hillys has been under relentless attack by an alien race called the DomZ as have many other planets in past and present. Every attack countless people from the planet are kidnapped and never seen again. Nobody knows where they go or what happened to the missing people. The Alpha Section is part of the army of Hillys and try to defend against the brutal attacks but even their efforts does not stop people from going missing. There is also the IRIS network who are believed to have links to the DomZ aliens and may be aiding them.
You follow the story of Jade who takes care of children who have lost their parents in the recent DomZ attacks. In such an attack on Jade's home the defense shield shuts down due to unpaid energy bills and she is forced to defend the children against the DomZ and nearly is taken captive by the aliens but her adoptive uncle Pey'j (a pig-like creature) saves her.
Together with her uncle Jade then sets out to find money to pay the bills. The first job she is offered is to catalogue every creature on the planet of Hillys and take pictures of each creature she encounters. Shortly after she takes this job on she receives a message asking her to work for a mysterious person and has to photograph one of the DomZ aliens.
Jade will try everything in her power to find out why the DomZ attack the planet and where everyone is being taken too. The deeper she digs for the truth the more she realizes what horrors have happened on the planet and that the sides of Good and Evil were not what they seemed to be.
Gameplay/Soundtrack
The game has wonderful simple controls which you master in mere minutes. The camera is at times a bit annoying (at least on my GC version) but never to the point of giving problems. The game reminds me a lot about the 3d Zelda games in feel and the obvious love the creators have for their own game. The graphics are still in my opinion very nice to look at and give the game a great atmosphere.
During the progress of the game you will have 2 mostly AI-controlled friends that assist Jade and can help solve puzzles and defeat enemies. Now Beyond Good and Evil is not exactly the longest gaming experience (8-10 hours are needed to complete the game) but considering you can often find it for anywhere between 15-25 dollar/euro in stores I think it is certainly worth looking for. I have so far replayed the game twice and loved every minute of it. This is one of the games that really does everything right and makes me glad I enjoy games the way I do.
Now on to one of the parts of the game I really love. The soundtrack. The music in the game is beautiful and is certainly a reason why I find this a great game. Ubisoft has released the soundtrack with 31 songs several years ago on Nintendo Insider. However since that link is long since dead it has been hard to find the entire soundtrack but it floats around the internet I imagine. The wiki article does link to a site with the songs but it seems they ripped the entire soundtrack from the game and I am not sure if that is legal. Anyway currently busy uploading the soundtrack I have to megaupload and will post the link in a bit. (missing tracks 29 and 30 sadly though)

The creator would enjoy making a sequel to BGE (and considering the end of the game it just screams sequel) but because of the commercial failure nobody is sure if that will ever happen.
TL;DR
Seriously go find the game somewhere if you haven't played it. It is available on various platforms and I am pretty sure it will not disappoint. It really is an under appreciated gem.
Please don't kill me for my English. I am Dutch so I can't help making some horrible spelling errors. I am also new to making threads here so I hope this one is ok.

It's on gametap.
Gametap sucked when I used it just under a year ago, but it might be pretty neat now. I'll probably resubscribe after I build my new PC in March or so.
I just picked up this game (used for PS2) a couple weeks back, but haven't yet had time to play it.
I've heard many good things about it and look forward to experiencing the story.
My Collection
It is a great game, but for one thing- the stealth sections.

Not a bad game at all, by any extent of the word -- in fact, an A+ or AA game, for sure. but NOT an AAA game. Some people, especially on these forums, treat the game like the second coming of christ, equal or superior to Zelda, even.
Its damn good, but it's not THAT good.
Definitely one of the lost gems of last generation, maybe even a classic to some, but NOT a genre- or generation-defining game.

The fact that it's in the same league as a Zelda without featuring a young boy in green tights is worth something. The only other game of last gen I can think of that made me think "Wow. This is just enough like Zelda to be familiar and just different enough to be awesome without feeling like a ripoff" was Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy, another game that nobody played but everybody should have.
It felt epic, and what Jade was doing felt important. That's a hard thing to convey, and while it may not be the system seller that Twilight Princess is, it's no less of a stellar game.
Not sure but you can find the PC demo here and see if it works: http://beyondgoodevil.com/uk/downloads.php

I think I'll play it again, just as soon as I get my Wii.
It'll never happen, but I've got time.
Taking pictures of animals was easily my favorite part.
For completely different reasons though.
Yeah, luckly I have Pinnacle and used that to remap the buttons on my 360 controller so it's similar to the console releases. After that, I was mad at myself for not getting this game earlier. Luckly, as many have said it's on Gametap. It was on my "To DL" list for awhile, but I was scared for my poor 36K connection. Luckly it wasn't as big as I thought it would be.
I've always liked the game, but I could never really quantify why I liked it. It was never really difficult, aside from a handful of the more frustrating stealth sections, and it wanders from genre to genre (racing segments, stealth segments, platformer segments), but I love it just the same. I picked it up around the same time as Sands of Time, and those two games were both "short" (8-10 hours is my perfect length of gaming nowadays, though) and powerful in their presentations. Jade was a great heroine, and the world felt very fleshed-out and realized.
I also like the very cinematic vibe of the game. It's like watching a well-made, well-executed, well-memorized favorite movie of mine.
One of my favorite games.
Needs a god damn sequel.
Don't even get me started on that :x
I honestly liked that game. A lot. Had fun playing through it, collected nearly all the pearl things, got all the pictures, etc.
Then I got to a point at the very, very end of the game where I'd just saved and was working my way back to that 3-person-triggered elevator thing, and noticed that the non-pig sidekick (HH?) had totally vanished. I reload, and sure enough, he's totally gone. Wandered around that entire moon base for a good hour before realizing that I was totally screwed.
I went online to the Ubisoft tech support forums, where there was a thread about this. Their response? "Well, HH tells you not to run so fast! You should have listened!". Not even a "Sorry we left game-breaking glitches in there! Our bad!", just a smart-assed reply. I'll need to look and see if that thread's still hanging around.
Anyway, all bitching aside. The game was a lot of fun. It's definitely not better than a good Zelda, but still good. The stealth sections were pretty retarded, but it was still worth playing through.
...and I find the shortage of Jade-themed hentai on the internet rather depressing...
Zelda with spaceships.
Okay, so from what I've heard (and I hear just about everything even remotely related, which these days isn't much, but it does come), Ancel was at Video Games Live in London and made some comment about it being in development. Heral spoke after him, but he was speaking in French and Tommy Tallarico doesn't speak French, and they didn't have a translator, so no word on what he said. Mainly, what we tend to hear is occasional 'in production' talk, but it always comes from some European gaming site or another that none of us have heard of, and nobody's ever able to find confirmation, so we go through the same dance of disappointment every few months.
So the community is waiting for E3 to see if Ubisoft follows up on what Ancel claimed at VGL. The local speculation (repeat, speculation) is that we're not seeing BG&E2 this year, but sometime in 2008.
Oh yes. Definitely. Best text entry on a console, ever. Many a times, I've just wanted to send emails to Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo, and ask them to make the BG&E text entry system an industry standard, across all consoles and games. visually awesome, and much quicker than any other virtual keyboard out there.
