It looks a lot like a barn owl to me. Barn owls don't hoot, they make noises like this instead:

    Sweet dreams.

EDIT: 1:25-30 is the best bit.

I mashed up the elk bugling video from earlier in the thread with this barn owl hissing video and now I can't sleep. Terrifying. D:

    h5.

I thought the monster had the head of a Snowy Owl, but it looks closer to a Barn Owl.

so this is like, jumping between them training to fight that thing and then actually trying to fight it

looks to me as more like jumping back in time to when the master fought it as a boy.

Hence "A Boy Must Learn". I dunno. likely wrong.

I have to say that this is a really cool concept.

It's interesting in that it works on the level of a children's story and a story about children at the same time.

AND YOU FOOLS VOTED FOR AUTOMATA. BECAUSE ROBOTS?

    Take a chill pill, bro.

I voted for Automata because I wanted to see what Gabe and Tycho would do with the concept, because it was so well outside what they usually do.

I really don't think the handful of books/movies that can be called sci-fi noir qualifies as "really really played out".

Sounds like you just have a really low tolerance for the concept.

I'm pretty sure it is the same kid. It appears he was running away from the guy with the monster mask, and stumbled onto the real monster.

Maybe that's just to straightforward to be true, though. I suppose he could just be imagining that the guy is the real monster.

"A boy must learn" is part of their fucking motto. "What a man must know, a boy must learn." As in "this is how you fucking become a man." Growing up. Etc.

Edit - I say this in response to Caulk Bite, silly goose.

They did say that they went up a mountain, and the shots of the trees don't really show the bits that would have leaves on. Could just be a transition above the snowline.

man, how do some of you get so confused by what is clear and simple (and beautiful) art? the kids were training in the village, now in the last panel with the beast, we've jumped to some point in the near future where they're actually battling the real thing
even the text makes this easy to figure out

I hope they never succumb to the temptation to Buckley their work for the sake of people that can't make inferences from what's implied
