Record of Agarest War - Opinions?

I'm having some fun with it. Ferreting out the combo attacks is frustratingly fun. I'm worried about Alchemy though. The game isn't exactly forthcoming about what mixes are good and what do I have to break down to make item XYZ.

You'll get the hang of it, trust me. Though it can be annoying when you're in a scenario like this:

"Let's see, sweet! 'Drain Energy'! Sounds like a cool skill... let's see what I need to make it..... A Magic Blade and an Executioner scythe... fuck, I don't have any of those... but I should have the books that list the ingredients to make them! Let's see, Executioner requires a Hanging Tree Branch.... WHAT THE FUCK IS A HANGING TREE BRANCH!? WHERE CAN I GET THIS SHIT!? Forget it, let's just go for the Magic Blade first... let's see, a Seiheki Ice dagger and a Photon Edge.... Oh, of course... because those Elemental weapons I make just don't get registered in the shop, so I can't just go and fucking buy one... geeze.... let's see: Crab Shell!? I GOT ONE OF THOSE BEFORE, WHERE THE HELL DID I GET IT!? FFFFFFFFFFFF...."
