everybody's got a hard on for moral relativity lately
Well relativism gets thrown around a lot with what is really psychologism or post-modernism or other ethical philosophies that are basically just nihilism
Relativism is important
Instead of "what is good/bad?"
You have "what is better/worse?"
You can deny traditional notions of absolute morality without denying that some things are better than others, and there are things in this world worth valuing.
Personally I am "against" morality in the sense that I think subscribing to any specific morality system is bonkers
But the basic notion of morality -- promoting subjective well-being and minimizing suffering -- seems pretty much some consensus type shit right there.
Nothing, in my opinion, has inherent worth beyond subjective well-being and subjective suffering. The worth of anything else, including "fundamental" values like justice, or fairness, or privacy, is just derived through suffering and well-being in the first place, so why not just cut to the chase.
i know this is from a dozen pages and half a day ago, but i was rereading that whole discussion and i'm not sure anyone pointed out that this is "a specific morality system": "promoting well-being and minimizing suffering" is utilitarianism
i would totally sympathize if someone wanted to argue that utilitarianism was the only sensible moral system, but it's not the only possible one, so the "anyone who subscribes to a specific system of morality is bonkers" statement kind of jumped out at me
Bearded fifteen-year-old Jimmy can't buy cigarettes at the local convenience store because the RFID chip in his biometric national ID card automatically lets the clerk know he's underage!
Steve can't get away with cheating on his wife of 13 years and the mother of his children because facebook posts his Foursquare location without his explicit permission, revealing that he wasn't on that business trip after all!
Janice just got out of a violent, abusive relationship with Chuck. She's got a new job and a new place in a new town. Away from Chuck. And Chuck has no idea where she lives or works anymore, so she doesn't have to worry about the next time he gets drunk, or high, or just bored and angry.
NIGHTMARE SCENARIO!
Chuck finds out where Janice lives through a mutual friend who doesn't know about the abuse because it was kept private. He tracks her down and beats her to death.
man has made a life decision about his sexuality that is new and exciting. however he is still wary about it and perceives it as dangerous. people judge him for his choice, and other judge him for feeling guilty about it.
Alternatively, Chuck knows where Janice lives because, duh, Google. He tracks her down but is arrested when he comes within 300 yards of her home because of that tracking device that was put on him after the court proceeding which successfully convicted him thanks to the CCTV cameras in the elevators of the building he used to live in with Janice.
