Asus EeePC 1000HE won't boot to HDD

TheFid2TheFid2 Registered User regular
So my Asus netbook up and froze a few days ago, and upon reset, it wouldn't boot, It just shows the BIOS screen and then boots to a blank screen with a blinking cursor. It does this to both the main Windows AND the recovery partition.

However, I was able to boot from a USB running Ubuntu and could read the HDD just fine, transfer files out, open other files. Which tells me that my Hard Drive is fine.

So any ideas what it could be?

    It's probably an MBR problem.

    Is it fixable?

Preferably without a CD since I'd have to track down an external

Depending on your which version of windows you're running, you can dump the install disc to a USB key and run the installer and go into the recovery tools and rewrite the MBR from there.

doesn't work with XP too well, as XP has an extreme hatred of running from anything but a cd.

Actually no, I've installed XP on my netbook from an USB.

The app's called WinToFlash, it worked flawlessly.

Ugh well I got a hold of an external disc drive and an XP CD and ran Recovery to fix the MBR and then re-install windows.

Well Windows won't boot (I get the error "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device") but now my Recovery partition is working again! So I can boot my recovery partition now, but I can't figure out how to boot my main Windows partition, I just get that error
