Job question

So, back in August, I got laid off. I wasn't thrilled about the job or where I was living, so it wasn't a total downer, but I have been unable to find a job since then (mostly due to the aircraft industry's crappiness level). Recently, some of the bigger firms have had positions open up that I'm qualified for, which is awesome! I've definitely been applying to every one I can, and I'm pretty confident in some of them.

I got a call today from my old company, saying that they're also starting to hire again, and I should send HR an updated resume. Like I said, I wasn't really too thrilled about the company or where I was living, but having a job right now would obviously trump all that. What I'm wondering, though, is that if I get an interview (which I'm pretty sure I will, I had some great references within the company and was laid off purely for budgetary reasons) would it be a good idea to tell these other companies while I'm still in the "under consideration" phase? I remember talking to companies post-interview stage when I had competing offers while in college, but I'm not sure if it'd play out the same way.

Thanks for any info. This was my first serious job, so I'm still pretty new to the whole hiring process

You can tell them whatever you want. If you want to say, "Thank you for the offer, I'll take it into consideration and get back to you by the end/middle of this week." That's great, it's also a good indication of a company you don't want to work for if they want the answer then and there, that means they're trying to frantically fill a spot, and there's probably a reason for it.

But other than that, I don't get what you're worried about. Are you worried about settling for a single job immediately or what? Maybe I misread that.

Well, I guess what I'm worried about is that if Company A gives me an offer with, let's say, a two-week window, and Company B is taking their sweet time getting back to me about an interview, is it a good idea to call up Company B and tell them about Company A's offer and ask if they can speed things up.

If you've already received an offer from Company A, you've got a hand to play with. I don't see any harm in letting Company B know you've received an offer, but are excited to work for Company B and what you need to do to make that happen.

yea. Don't turn down any interviews at this point. Lets say you like company B, but you recieve an offer from A but are still waiting on hearing back from B, its perfectly reasonable to go back to B and say I received an offer but wanted to hear from you guys.
