And then they ripped off the massive owlbeast's face and antlers, to run back to the village holding it aloft in triumph.

I don't get the impression that anything bad is going to happen! I honestly think that they are just having fun and playing in the forest with their mentor.

Of course, the fact that i think this probably means one of them is going to die horribly in the next comic.

I wish I could believe this

I wish I could be in this bubble and stay happy, and never read the last comic where one of the children is definitely going to be horribly murdered

So the series switches between them playing with trainer dude and the actual battle?

Or is it all just pretend and the snow scenes are in the kids' minds?

No, the snow scenes are when the boys are older.

It's when they are performing the task they are being unknowingly trained for.

Maybe three of them makes it back alive, the jester being the one kid who gets eaten.

Are you sure on that? Look at the transition in part 3. Kid looks exactly the same. So far it looks like the leader and the four kids went out, leader chased pair one, pair two yelled and distracted him then the first pair pounced on him. Much joy and delight followed. Unless a tree falls on a scout or we get some sort of surprise basilisk I'm not seeing it.

how are you not seeing this?

The parts of the story with the adult are in the fall, when the kids are training for their task. Then we transition to the winter, when they're executing the task they were trained for. Whether or not the kids look older doesn't really matter, since it's likely just the very next season.

So the first part shows them playing with the adult acting as the monster. Then we see them transition to hunting the actual monster. And now they cut back to show us exactly what the kids are expected to do in order to kill the monster. Everything about the tone and foreshadowing tells me the winter shots are real and it's very clearly being set up for at least one kid to die. Maybe he will or won't, but if this is just a straightforward pretend-fun-happy-times thing I will eat my hat and be very disappointed in the story.

So I suppose the two greetings - "Please/thank you" and "How do you do" represent the lure, catching the creature's attention, and then grabbing the apple represents snatching the prize that is potentially the point of the whole enterprise, and then at the end the jester takes one for the team... but I am still trying to figure out what the 'apple' is going to be. What are they after? Just catching the creature? I want to knooow.

(Of course there is the possibility that I'm terribly wrong about everything, also.)

Just because only three kids come back doesn't necessarily mean one of them dies. Maybe one of them tames the owlbeast and ends up staying in the woods as a ranger of justice type riding around on his awesome owlbeast mount.

    Alternatively, death.

Am I the only one who thinks "tumbling down" might itself mean 3 die and only 1 survives?

Because if that turns out to be true then D:

:( The little blonde kid comes into the frame for the jester line on this page.

And he almost got eaten by the basilisk, too. Live, blonde kid!
