My gf came back from hong kong with this game, gurumin. It's the real game, but its in simplified chinese. This wouldn't be a problem (she's chinese) except I can't get windows xp to show the damn fonts in the games popup when you start it. what happens is it comes up with a config window where you can set up its graphics and sound options and the gamepad you are using, and then you can click start game.
No matter what I do, how many IME I install or what I do with the language bar, it only shows the text in this menu as ???? and various other squiggly weird bits. I can't fix it for the life of me, so we can't work out what the error screen that comes up means when we click the start game button, because its in random mish mash. So we can't fix it.
Someone guide me through the steps to force xp to bloody well work like its supposed to, I'm at my wits end. My gf really wants to play this game and she spent 40 bucks on it.
I have all the eastern language fonts and text support services installed, and the game is in simplified chinese. I've followed any number of xp guides to getting these fonts to work, and nothing is working.
Any experts in the guts of xp can help me?

Here is a screenshot of what I'm seeing:

This is a different beast than a web page. Did you try looking for patches as an alternative?

Yeah. There are none. So what you're saying is that unless I have chinese xp I can't even see the imbedded font in the menu properly? I thought that was the point of giving you other fonts?

Did you try switching your PC to chinese mode? I know sometimes japanese games won't work if you aren't in japanese mode so maybe chinese games are the same.

I can't recall how to do it right now, but there should be a way, somewhere in Control Panel -> Regional and Language Options, to enable the language bar at the bottom of your screen. It lets you choose which language you want to display/type in, beyond just installing the font on your computer. It's what I use at work when looking up Japanese websites or writing Japanese for emails. Can't for the life of me recall how it works.

Alternatively, the PSP port of the game is being localized and should be out sometime this year. That might be another option.

IMEs really only function for applications that ... process words. I have a few foreign language applications on my PC too, and they also show up as ???????????? [???????] [???????]

My next advice to you would be to get any online help you could for the game, such as what buttons to click and whatnot.

Also, this is usually only true for installation and settings. If you can't find anything at all about how to install and set up this game, I'd suggest experimenting with different combinations until you finally get the main game to work. If you have gotten the game actually installed, show us pics of the main game instead of the settings window.

I don't really know anything about this game, but if it is a full-screen game, it will not depend (usually) on windows for text functions and you will be able to read its own font easily.

And unless you get everything on your computer, from application icon names to the start menu in chinese, you won't have the right configuration to correctly view these parts of the game.

    Try this:

Switch Japanese to Simplified Chinese, of course.

Yeah everyone goes on about IME, but that's only for inputting text (far as I've found out anyway).

I like how Windows 98 IME didn't let you even do that half the time

Or, if you don't want to change the region windows is in every time, you could use Microsoft's AppLocale. You still need to install support for East Asian languages, however.
