Busted PStwo...fixable?

So a friend just gave me their old PStwo (smally version) its out of warrantee, and he's allready just bought a replacement.

It had been looked after well, but one day, when he went to turn it on, it just did nothing, no power light, nothing on screen, disc didn't spin. It acts as if it were unplugged.

Any idea what might be wrong? or indeed if it is easilly fixable. I imagine sony won't offer to fix it without charge (and I expect a PS2 price drop soon, so I'm relly looking for a free/cheap fix)

I don't have much knowledge of electronics.

cheers.

Try the power brick from his new one if he will let you, it might just be that.

thats a damn good idea. Shame he's at the opposite end of the country...

I might try to take it into gamestation to trade in, without a power brick, they will test it with one of their's, if it works, I can say I'll bring it back later with the brick, if not, then I will know the problem.

    cheers for that.

    Same topic, different console...

My roommate has let me borrow his PS2 (one of the older, bigger ones), which he hasn't used in months. Unfortunately it's not letting me boot up any games - some DVD movies work, some don't. Is it basically dead, or is there anything I can try to do to get it reading games again?

It's either Dusty/ dirty lens or the laser needs a little more power. There are guides you can find after a quick google search on how to do this. It has to do with opening up the console disassemble different parts of it to get to some screws that can increase the laser power.

I myself have tried this but in the end it still wouldn't read games. I just gave up and got a new slim one. Of Course if you're just borrowing it I'd leave it alone.

I don't recall where I found it, but I used an online guide (with pictures) to fix the laser on my old PS2. Since I upped the pot? setting on the laser, my old PS2 is still going strong. I think you just need some jeweler's screwdrivers, patience and ability to follow instructions.

Go for it. What do you have to lose with a broken PS2? (Of course you might want to ask first!) :D

For the PS2 fatty style moving the position of the laser is extremely simple, theres a "big" white wheel that moves it up and down, used to get Disc Read Error like 50 times everytime i tried to boot a game, cleaned the laser a few time and it worked better for about 1 week. As soon as I moved the laser it worked perfectly, but I don't think I ever put all the screws back into the bottem of it incase it ever needed adjusting again, since I took it apart like 5 times in a one week span

Edit: I believe This is the guide I used, and according to this it adjusts the ANGLE of the lens not the distance from the disc, but I swear thats what I read back when I did it...
