(Superior art on the left)
This is one interesting game.
Hopefully you're at least familiar with Vanillaware; the developers who pretty much define gorgeous 2d graphics.
(from Odin Sphere)
I believe GG predated Odin Sphere, but it was released here not long after, and I'm finally getting around to it.
It's certainly unique.
Lillet Blan, the protagonist, a young student who recently began attending a magical university.
She only has five days to spend learning the art of sorcery from the school's crazy cast of teachers before everything goes to hell.
Gammel Dore(
), her head instructor.
Chartreuse Grande and Opalneria Rain, two more instructors with issues.
Opalneria is a necromancer who insists the form of magic isn't demonic as tainted by rumors, but holy, since a necromancer can exert control over souls; a facet of a higher power.
Advocat, an instructor of dark magics who's also a devil.
Lillet distrusts him, but Gammel Dore insists he is reliable.
(Sound familiar?)
Bartido Ballentyne, a classmate who's kind of a jerk.
Amoretta Virgine, another classmate. Not sure what's more suggestive; her name or her outfit.
Oh yeah, the gameplay.
Lillet starts off with a core 'base' in each level. From there she can use different flavors of grimoires to summon new bases, with different creatures and abilities.
Glamour controls faeries, Necromancy controls ghosts, Sorcery controls magical beasts, and Alchemy utilizes Science!.
It starts out simple, but it gets crazy real fast, especially since it's all on a 2d plane.
It also controls pretty well for a PS2 game. The analogs control troop movement, d-pad switches between the available soldiers(as well as selecting multiples), and there's a map shortcut for quick access.
The game doesn't appear to be very long(Five days, which repeat until the mysteries are solved), but the story is good, and there's 25 optional missions which seem pretty difficult.

Granted, I may have been spoiled by Odin Sphere which was probably the most incredible localization in the history of Japanese to American gaming.
Guess I'll have to look forward to Lego Harry Potter for my Hogwarts fantasies
You really have to see this game in motion. The story sequences are done in a kind of Sakura Wars style; full screen portraits.

2007, I think.
Don't mind him, he doesn't believe RTS should be combined with anything, ever.
God help you if a game has characters you have to command or combine powers with. Characters should just be people you talk to in cutscenes. Damn Razorgirls need to get back in the kitchu'n!
I no longer have a Ps2, but it looks interesting. I'll play anything like Sacrifice or Battlezone, but that looks slightly more traditional, with the cursor and all.
Your obsession with Brutal Legend is both sad and hilarious
I am not sure which one more than the other
Did they fix the ass framerate issues with Odin?
So far, GG doesn't have any.
Neither did Muramasa. Odin Sphere just had a lot (more) going on.
I summoned two dragons at once, and they moved at a slow rate; not everything around them. Might be a bug.
It's nothing nearly as bad as Odin Sphere's, and I didn't really mind that.
He was so, so awesome.
Especially on... what was... Cycle 5, Day 4 I think it was.
The plot got a little :? on the final day and not all characters are as developed as they could have been (I'm looking at you, Hiram and Amoretta), but still Groundhog Day on Hogwarts was very interesting.
That said, I really wanted to try it (and Odin's Sphere) but never got the chance. Maybe I'll see if I spot it next time I'm at the game store.
Steam: Chagrin LoL: Bonhomie
Glamour controls magical beings, really. Fairies, elves, unicorns. Very nature magic oriented.
Sorcery, on the other hand, controls the forces of Hell! Imps, demons, that kind of thing. Heck, Sorcery's stationary defensive unit looks very much like a succubus, for crying out loud.
It's a very nice RTS and I'm always fond of vanillawares 2d presentation and storytelling.
Must finish it one day
Every map takes place inside the school, so they all look the same.
One of the summoning portals also looks like Baphomet.
Also: there's base building! Sort of. Each of the four magic types have three grimoires, each functioning as a 'base', which can be upgraded and used to create new beasties.
I'm on the third day(third loop), and yeah, I have a feeling this won't be a particularly indepth story like Odin Sphere's, but it's a good one so far.
Some of the standard maps get really tough, not to mention the optional ones.
And in case I didn't mention before: the voice acting really is phenomenal. They did a great job on the VA, probably because George Kamitani was involved in the dubbing process.
Very, very good. The resolution was a little crazy, but all in all, this was probably the best Vanillaware game I've played.
It got exceedingly difficult at times, but I managed. The localization was the best part. All the VA was great.
The 'bonus' final level was a blast. It was basically free reign over a massive army and endless mana, with lots of enemies that had no chance against Lillet.
