Transfering Domain Names

My website is currently registered with an god-awful hosting company. I'd really like to transfer the domain, but the contact email is under the hosting company's name.

Does anyone know how I'd go about getting it back? the physical address is registered to my house.

It depends on the top level domain, but you basically need to clear it up with your hosting company; they should have full details on the transferring process. Our company requires the customer on our account to send in a headed, signed fax with details of the domain, and where they need it transferred to, for example, so that we can start the process and ensure that it's sent to the right host.

You should be able to transfer the hosting easily enough, then worry about transferring the domain afterwards. That way, there is less to go wrong at any one point.

Transferring the hosting should be a simple matter of getting a new hosting company, and changing your domain's nameserver values.
