Health insurance in England for a foreign student

I'm moving to London in September to do a one-year LLM program (basically a masters of law), and I'm wondering what to do about health insurance. I know nothing about the British health insurance system - will I be automatically enrolled through my school (Queen Mary)? Will I/can I sign up for private health insurance? Would it be better (or even possible) for me to get health insurance through an American company that will cover me abroad?

I've always either had my parent's health insurance, government-provided health insurance (in Japan) or else student health insurance as a graduate student in the US, so I'm at a bit of loss now. I would greatly appreciate advice as well as resources on the topic in general!

When I was in the UK (may have changed, this was 10 years ago), I was all set through the NHS. My understanding back then was, as long as you're legally resident, you're good to go.

    The NHS has you covered.

You could sign up for private health insurance, BUPA etc.

but then you'd be an idiot :P

    +the NHS is really good

No health insurance needed! Score one for the NHS!

Edit: oh, just a note. I assume its Queen Mary Uni. Most universities have their own GP surgeries that you sign up to when enrolling (at least in my experience). If you dont, find one in the nearby area to register with. Just to save hassle if you ever need to see the doctor about something.
