360 headset buzzing for other people

so, i have a wired headset- the one that came with my 360

it's usually been fine

however, now it seems that people hear a huge buzz from it? i can hear everyone else very well, but apparently when my headset is plugged in (even with the rocker switched to red/off), other players hear a loud, horrible buzz

i got kicked from a few games before finally realizing it so now i'm playing with my mic unplugged which sucks

short of buying another one, is there a fix for this? is it a known issue?

    i have a 60gb 360 purchased in winter of 08

    do the headsets look perceptibly different?

    Physically? Not really. If you have one with the volume control/mute on the end, that one is the generation 1. If you have the one with the volume control in the middle and has the clip, that's the generation 2. I was never a fan of that one, since my friends always said my voice always cut out.
