Hey guys! So, I have a gift idea I'd really like to see through to completion. My girlfriend's grandparents live in Kentucky pretty much in the Boone National Forest (by Morehead, KY). They have a little over 300 acres of land in that crazy wooded area, and although we've gone on tons of hikes most of us are lost as could be in those hills. This land has been in her family since before the Civil War, and I thought an awesome gift would be one of those 3-dimensional topographical maps of the area.

I'm not sure of how far I can take this...if the best I can do is a large wall-hanging map with the elevated areas bubbled out, I guess that's the best I can do. I'm willing to take this pretty far as it would be a family gift and I am positive it would be well-received.

I would be surprised if the county the land is in doesn't sell them. Check the county capitol building.

edit: I thought you meant something else. You can drop a normal topo map in Blender and make a 3D map out of it, but I can't remember how at the moment.

Shapeways can print in colored sandstone, might want to check that out.
