Windows XP SP2 is being a gaping asshole

I've been trying to install SP2 on my machine for the past couple of days, and I've had nothing but headache. After giving up on microsoft's shitty windows update (Which keeps giving me 500 errors), I tracked down and downloaded the install file myself.

Only now, it hangs at the "Checking Product Validity" screen. It doesn't give me an error message, like my copy of windows isn't validated, it just hangs. I have to use C-A-D to get out of it.

My roommmates have been having the same error, and microsoft's customery support is a joke. We keep getting handed off. Anyone got any ideas?

Have you tried making a slipstream install disc?

Try updating in Firefox using Windiz, sometimes works when Microsoft Update will not.

As a last resort, you could find your old XP install disc and make a copy of it with SP2 slipstreamed to it, and then reformat using that. There's some guides and a program out there called nLite that seems to be pretty good at automating most of the process.

Otherwise I dunno what to tell you.
