Good/Cheap PC game controller?

edited May 2010 in Help / Advice Forum
On my old system running hacked Sixaxis drivers was easy enough, but with Win7 64 the hack is too messy and I just don't want to deal with it to get my PS3 controllers working.

So I figure I'll just buy an actual USB controller and be done with the skullduggery.

Anyone have suggestions for good USB game controllers that work with windows 7? Something in the form factor of a Dualshock is preferred, doesn't need to be wireless or have any fancy features.

Or maybe a straight up plain jane USB Xbox controller would be best? ( I don't own one though)

If you're looking to play fighters, platformers, or other 2D games, a USB Sega Saturn pad is probably one of the best controllers you could get. They're reasonably cheap on eBay; there seem to be a fair few available for less than GBP20 from China/Hong Kong, and they'll be detected as regular USB game pads by Windows (and will work natively with a PS3, as a nice bonus).

I'll second the 360 controller, assuming you're playing a multiplatform game released recently it would probably have native 360 control scheme support anyway.

Alternatively, I have scads of perfectly functional PS2 dualshock controllers around. For a long time I used a radioshack playstation to USB converter dongle that worked great, but the drivers are really old and the dongle itself has stopped working.

Does anyone know if there are any of these around that still work with Win7 64?

The exact model I have (on Win7 64) appears to no longer be available, but they run around on the Internet under the :winky: name of a "super joy box", and convert between 1 and 4 playstation controllers to USB. The one I have maps opposed analog directions to different channels (which is required for correct dance pad function).

The closest thing I can find to the model I have (looks pretty darn close) is here.

Edit: Oh and it plugs and plays, at least on my Win7 64 box.

The 360 controller really is number 1. ALL OTHERS ARE #2 OR LOWER!

I personally think the 360 wireless controller is ichiban, I like being able to sit across the room.

Can you make a wireless XBOX controller work w/ the PC? What if I plugged in the power charger for the battery pack?

I think I got only wireless controllers at this point...

The wireless controller has to use the wireless dongle to work. Just a play and charge lead isn't enough.

I think the Xbox controllers are awful. Big, clunky, and bleh.

The Logitech Dualshocks are nice, though.

Incorrect. Wireless controller, for those with a wireless receiver, is better. It's really quite simple.

That being said, non-Microsoft receivers are much more common than the authentic ones. I use one of the later to play gamepad games (like FFVII) on my HDTV, which is connected to my PC by about 50 feet of HDMI/DVI and audio cables.

The point of this? The wireless controllers works to 30 feet, through two walls, easily. Probably more.

    Otherwise, wired is good.

Wireless works too, but I had thought Microsoft stopped making the receivers for them, didn't realize third party ones existed.

I've got one of these. It works pretty nice for me.

I have a logitech controller and kind of have a gripe with them. The square fittings for the joysticks seems like a huge design flaw. Instead of moving around in a smooth circle, the joysticks tend to get stuck in the corners as a result.

The 360 controller is really nice in many regards, but whether wired or wireless, that D-Pad is atrocious.

Just so you know, pretty much anything Xbox 360 related will work on the PC. Street Fighter arcade stick/ Fight Pad, even the Dance Dance Revolution controller works.
