DC Solicits for August 2009: Everybody dies, probably

Yeah other than the Morrison Batman stuff, GL stuff, and BoP this is. Not good.

I mean really, my DC list looks like this now:
Emerald Warriors
Secret Six
Booster Gold
Birds of Prey
Justice League: GL
I don't even want to pick up Action Comics anymore, because the Super titles have shown they do not care about continuing a story, just smash and replace. I'm sorry Cornell, you're my brah, brah, but I'm gonna have to pass.

I'm thinking of trade waiting, but I don't know how long DC waits for one of their flagship titles to go to HC or trade.
If #13 is good I'll probably keep going with it though.

more people should read Red Robin and Batgirl
Batgirl's been great since like...issue 2 and Red Robin really stepped it up once Tim stopped being pissy, plus it's gonna be by Nicieza now and he's awesome and was good on Robin so buy it
B&R was only originally planned to be 12 issues long, so I hope they've got some good talent lined up for the extension. I'd be happy with Andy Clarke staying on the book, or else Frank Quitely doing some interior work instead of just covers.
Even my enthusiasm for DC is starting to dwindle now. There's really nothing new or unexpected on here at all. And although I still read a ton of DC books, I am starting to get tired of Johns's stuff. I've never been into Marvel's continuity stream all that much, but the relaunches for the Heroic Age have me wadding into that water more anxiously now.
I'm reading all the Brightest Day stuff, but it's really the Morrison Bat Books, the Booster stuff, and the Super books (sometimes) that I actually look forward to.
Also, I feel like having JMS on the normal Superman book will kind of undermine Earth One for fans who read the ongoing, so now there will be extra stress on that book to succeed with its casual audience.

What annoyed me about Andy Clarke's run is that for even a simple three issue arc (which works very well for B&R), on #12 he only did half the issue, the other half you have to give major props to Dustin Nguyen and Scott Hanna for doing the best they could to mimic Clarke's style.
It's like, come on brah, you had a good lead-in time and you still struggled at the end.

Frazer Irving is doing #13-#15.
I don't think they've said who'll be doing #16-18. I know Frank Quitely was supposed to do the final arc of the book, but since we don't know how long it's extended who knows when that'll hit.
Although the extension works out better for him since he was sick or injured last year and couldn't do interiors.
Morrison said recently that Bruce Wayne is back by the end of issue 16, so it seems likely that 16-18 could very well be the last or possibly second-to-last arc.
But then again, Tony Daniels is supposed to get to keep writing Batman after the RIP flashback.

18 might be the last issue because that means 3 nicely packaged 6 issue trades. Or they push it to 24 issues.
I give the Green Lantern solicit the "Missing the Point" award:
BRIGHTEST DAY continues as what readers have been asking for finally arrives: a male Star Sapphire in the form of the Predator.
Uh...I'm pretty sure what readers were asking for was a normal Star Sapphire that happens to be male. Not a male dressed up in a full suit of armor (Carol must feel really pissed about her lack of clothes now) chaining the heroes up.

To be fair, the Predator is a character from the 90s. It was back when Carol was crazy and had her male half running around as the predator and living in her brain or something and her woman Star Sapphire half doing shit, and her.

It's probably not a good thing that I keep reading through DC's solicits and thinking, "Oh yeah, they're publishing that." I'd totally forgotten that there were new Batman Beyond, Red Hood, Legion of Super-Heroes, First Wave, Mighty Crusaders, and Zatanna comics either already coming out, or soon to be.
On the upside, Booster Gold looks like it's being created just for me, Secret Six looks like they're going to be doing The Magnificent Six, and while the main Teen Titans story looks like it'll be awful, I kind of want to buy it just for the back-up. And Shade the Changing Man's guest-starring in Hellblazer, which is kind of awesome.
I am picking up the new Legion books, but honestly wondering why. I have zero attachment to any of the characters, and didn't even know who they were two years ago. I think it's just segueing from the Super-books, and already having Adventure on my pull list.
Edit: I really enjoyed Johns's Legion backups in Adventure earlier, but I don't know if Levitz is even going after those threads or what. I really know next to nothing about the Legion, even in their current form.

Who has been asking for a male Star Sapphire? That's nothing I really care to read about. I'm perfectly fine with them being the cheesecake faction.
Predator is actually from the mid-80s and made a few appearances in the 90s. seems like Johns is sticking mostly with his original GL Vol 2. history and ignoring the, uh, maltus demon / star sapphire demon baby angle that came later in some random justice league book.
i think the chaining of carol front and center on the cover is eye-roll worthy but am otherwise fine with the Predator.

That was Extreme Justice. There's a pretty good write-up of that craziness here, for anyone curious about it. I'm an Extreme Justice apologist, but even I can't defend those few issues.
On the trade front, other than Starman volume 3 and Y volume 4, nothing that screams "buy me" to me. The new Superman and Luthor hardcovers look OK, but not must-have.

Lex Luthor: Man of Steel is awesome and if you haven't read it it's definitely worth buying.

The threads connecting the Crusaders are unraveling all too quickly as The Web becomes the first to lose more than he bargained for. Is the price he paid too high? And what connection does the mysterious Fox have to the mystery of the Red Circle?

People weren't buying these characters when they were $2.99, why would they pay $3.99?

His Action Comics run with Rucka wasn't that good, if that's the kind of work he does in the "real" DCU.

Or Nicola Scott, that would be a nice arc. (I like this the most, gives her some big time phat props, yo.)
and karl kerschl
How would you like Mike Marts' job?
But then again, Tony Daniels is supposed to get to keep writing Batman after the RIP flashback.
tell me how i'm supposed to breath with no air air air
Couldn't find an Air Supply song? Or an awesome 80's hair metal song?
https://twitter.com/Hooraydiation
those wouldn't be relevant
and unlike you, my references aren't reaching
But your reference is a flavor of the week, it has no soul, no sweet guitar solo. It is the new/current Green Arrow series.
Both. They told ahead of time it would be canceled so she could plan out.

Give it twenty years and people will think it's a classic when it's actually not any good
