When Foolproof Ruined the Moon Thread [Alt: The Moon: Way Cooler Than Family]
On May 25, 1961 President Kennedy made what some thought was a crazy promise to the American public, that by the end of the decade we would land on the moon.
This is currently available on Instant Watch on Netflix and I somehow managed to not see this in the two years it's been out. With NASA footage, interviews with the astronauts and NASA personnel and Gary Sinise doing the narration, you can't go wrong. I'm half way through and I feel like a kid again, completely fascinated by what NASA accomplished in such short time and in awe of the men and women who made it happen. We haven't been back to the moon since 1972 and while NASA has been active the public seems to have all but forgotten the excitement and suspense that gripped the country in NASA's early days.
"When We Left Earth" is a great way to catch that fever again. "Apollo 13" was cool but watching actual astronauts talk about EVAs and walking on the moon the way you or I would talk about a trip to the beach is surreal. Go watch "When We Left Earth" while it's still on Instant Watch and if you've seen it already watch it again or go buy it.
when i was a kid, i went to space camp in florida. i was there when a shuttle landed and got to watch that.
it was all RIDICULOUSLY AWESOME
:^:
Space Camp ranks as one of the top experience of my childhood.
I went to the one in Huntsville because it's like 5 minutes from my parents' house.
(Also, the one in Florida is closed now. I think the Astronaut Hall of Fame is on the same site.)
i was pretty bummed when i found out about my beloved space camp. i mostly went to that one because i was able to go see my family in florida for a couple days before it started. i assume they do the two missions everywhere? i was a payload specialist in one and mission director in the other.
it was a little disappointing when i didn't befriend a robot who helped me shoot into space though

I never went to space camp or anything like that. Ever since I was a kid I really loved the idea of space. Astronomy is my absolute favorite topic to read about.
I already know that when I die my great, unfulfilled dream will be to have gone into space - especially to walk on the moon.
It amazes me how many people don't appreciate that. Some people have fucking walked on the moon. Out of the billions and billions and billions of people in the history of humanity whop have ever lived there are only a dozen people who have been able to walk on the Moon. Most people in history have struggled to survive, most people rarely leave their hometown. That dumbfounds me every time I think about it. There are twelve guys who left this place and went somewhere completely new.
Fuck.

I was listening to an episode of wiretap once, where they were talking about whether it would be better to spend a year in Europe with a weekly stipend or whatever, or ten minutes on the moon.
On the fucking moon! This is even a question?

It was pretty awesome!
Went back to the Space Center on Saturday and spent all day there. It was pretty great.
I almost said something terrible.

You can't see the stars!
When I was a kid, I used to go out and watch shuttles launch
But now it's not a big deal! It has definitely lost its luster
