I waste too much time on certain websites, and I want to block myself from visiting those websites in a way that will be hard to undo. I tried editing /etc/hosts , but for some reason that did nothing (I added the line "127.0.0.1 blockedsite.com" but it did nothing. I also added "127.0.0.1 www.blockedsite.com" just in case, but I can still access the site). Any ideas for alternatives?
I suggest having a friend do it for you so that you won't know how to undo it.

Try out SelfControl. You can control for how long the websites are blocked at a time and quitting the application or restarting your computer doesn't remove the block.
